One of the best arcade games ever made

Last November I mentioned the announcement that the Simpsons Arcade Game would be coming to XBLA, and with that being said, I assumed it would come to PSN. I have heard no new information since then, such as a release date for the XBLA version, the confirmation of a PSN version, or anything else. Then today the PlayStation Blog broke the news. Not only is The Simpsons Arcade Game dropping on PSN next week, it’s going to be FREE to PS+ members!

I was initially going to purchase it on XBLA simply because I wouldn’t have been able to wait around for the PSN version. Now that it’s coming out next week, at no cost to me, I’ll be all over the PSN version. You can bet your bottom dollar I’ll be online Tuesday night taking on Mr. Burns’ well-dressed goons and gigantic obese wrestlers as I fight to bring Maggie back home.

That’s the Soul Siren, your arch-nemesis

I’m sure many of you fellow gamers are familiar with the hack and slash/ dungeon crawler RPG genre. Here’s the generic laundry list that typically defines this genre:

  • Fantasy setting
  • Two or more players
  • Simple, button mashing combat
  • Several different classes of character, each with unique skills
  • Develop skills by assigning points to skill trees
  • Grind to get XP
  • Smash boxes and open chests to find gold and equipment
    • Purchase new equipment and sell off old equipment
    Here’s what Crimson Alliance does:
    • Fantasy setting
    • Two or more players
    • Simple, button mashing combat
    • Several different classes of character, each with unique skills
    • Develop skills by assigning points to skill trees

  • Purchase new equipment and sell off old equipment
  • Seems like your everyday, run of the mill dungeon crawler

The Simpsons Arcade Game FINALLY Being Ported to XBLA…Probably PSN

I have a lot of fond memories of arcades. Whether it was my aunt giving me $20 each time she took my sister and I to Discovery Zone or hitting up the arcade in Oneonta where they gave you free quarters for each good grade on your report card, I always had a blast. Running up to an awesome looking machine, popping in a shiny quarter, and playing alongside friends, family or complete strangers made up some of the best times of my childhood. Being the avid Simpsons fan that I am, it probably comes as no surprise that one of my favorite arcade games of all time is The Simpsons. I remember beating it for the first time when three friends and I were on a Cub Scout camping trip and there happened to be an arcade at the campsite! I also remember playing this arcade whenever we went to the Ground Round on Long Island (you know, the restaurant that had the popcorn as their “free bread service” and had ice cream sundaes in baseball helmets for dessert). Oh man, what a way to digress. The point of this rant is to inform you that this most excellent arcade game is in the midst of being ported to the 360 for sure, with a big possibility of the PS3 also.

The game popped up for listing in Australia, meaning it’s in the works. The company that is supposedly developing the game is Backbone. This makes sense…Konami is the company that developed not only The Simpsons arcade game but also the company that developed the X-Men arcade game. AND when the X-Men arcade game was ported to XBLA and PSN earlier this year, guess who the developer was…BACKBONE! Soooo a listing showing Backbone working on a Konami arcade game makes sense. While the listing only mentioned the XBLA version, I’ve got my fingers crossed for a PSN version. With the X-Men port, XBLA received it a month or two before PSN, so chances are The Simpsons game will have the same deal. Read More »

    XBL Gold vs. PS+

I received an e-mail from Microsoft this morning notifying me that my XBL Gold account would be expiring next month, which makes sense since I got a 360 last August. However, now I had to pose myself a question…do I want to spend the $50 to renew my Gold account? Not only do I rarely play 360 games online, but at the same time I’m paying for a PS+ account. Thing is, my PS+ account will be coming due soon too. Seeing how I’m currently unemployed and times are hard, I don’t want to be spending money I don’t have on things I really don’t need right now. So I got to thinking about the perks of both, and whether they were worth the price of admission or not.

What I get with a XBL Gold Account:

    • The ability to play online. This is arguably the best perk to having a Gold account, simply because you cannot play online without it.
    • Superior online experience. The 360 does offer a better online experience than the PS3, from the awesome and comfortable headset that plugs in right to your controller to the ability to have cross-game chat. I do believe there are more 360 players than PS3 players as well, so it’s easier to find a game to play online with the 360
    • Exclusive content. Gold members do get access to exclusive betas and demos before the general public.

    What I get with a PS+ Account:

    • Free games. On average, PS+ users get one free game PSN game a week. It’s not just lame shovelware games either; I’ve gotten some pretty great games like Magic the Gathering, Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage II and others.
    • Discounted games. This is the biggest advantage to PS+, as I can buy games over PSN for less money than it costs on XBLA. Often times, many games are discounted from 33-50% off, particularly in the first week of release. I’ve gotten a ton of games on the cheap from PS+, and it has paid for itself many times over.
    • Exclusive content. I received early access to betas for DC Universe, Uncharted 2, and Uncharted 3, as well as early access to demos and other PS-exclusive content. Read More »

WWE Allstars Demo Available Now on XBLA…Later Tonight on PSN

It’s almost here…only seven days to go until the release of THQ’s WWE Allstars video game. Today THQ released a demo on XBLA (and later tonight via PSN)  that allowed players to check out a singles match as either Ultimate Warrior or Rey Mysterio. Since I hate Mysterio with a passion, I selected Ultimate Warrior and took Mysterio to school. I should note that I downloaded the 360 version because I didn’t feel like waiting for some random time tonight whenever Sony decided to update PSN.

Since it’s a different style of game, the controls are nothing like SvR’s, and I was hoping that the demo would come with a tutorial of sorts, which it does not. So there was a lot of guess work as I punched, kicked, and slammed Mysterio around. The first match went back and forth, and eventually Mysterio was able to squeak a win from me after hitting the 619. The second match I did better, and was able to give him a Gorilla Pres Slam for the win.

    PSN Review: Stacking

Have you ever played a video game where the medium involved Russian nesting dolls? Neither have I, so when I heard about Double Fines new downloadable game Stacking, my curiosity was piqued. I had enjoyed their previous work on Costume Quest, but the steep price of admission stopped me from going beyond the demo. When I saw that Stacking had a price sticker of $15 I knew I wouldn’t even consider purchasing. Then when it was released, I was shocked to discover that the full game was free to all PlayStation Plus members. Since that includes me, I was able to sit back and enjoy this little puzzler.

You take control of Charlie, the youngest member of the Blackmore family. An evil industrial baron has kidnapped the family, and it is up to Charlie to rescue them all and thwart the Baron’s dreams of organized child labor. Charlie does this by solving puzzles across four different levels. Unfortunately, Charlie is pretty darn small, so he relies on the help of other nesting dolls to get things done. To break up the game a little bit there are cutscenes that play out like old silent movies. So you will have the characters moving around and doing basic actions (they are not very animated since they are nesting dolls) and then it will cut away to a screen with a line of dialogue, and then back for more action, and then more dialogue.

    XBLA Review: X-Men (1992 Arcade)

Anyone who knows me as a gamer knows I’m a sucker for beat ‘em ups. I think I own most of them that are available digitally on PSN or XBLA like Castle Crashers, Final Fight, TMNT, Scott Pilgrim, and probably some others as well. Heck, I even pop in the ol’ Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection from time to time to play some Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and others. So when X-Men, an awesome arcade game I used to play growing up, came out last week, I bought it first thing when I woke up. I was a bit tossed up on whether to buy it on PSN or XBLA, but in the end I felt that I needed some more 360 games, so I went with the XBLA version. Also, I had some free MS points thanks to Bing rewards!

The game is pretty much a direct port of the arcade version. Unlike Turtles In Time Reshelled, the graphics are the same as they were when you were popping quarters into the dual-screen, six-player cabinet. And yes, the game does support up to six players, with drop-in/drop-out co-op, and you can choose from classic X-Men Wolverine, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Storm, and Dazzler. This is a great feature since it makes it easier for you to join in a game, and others can join or leave your game at their leisure without affecting the flow of your game. The other thing that remains unchanged is the ridiculously horrible/corny dialogue. Pyro will still threaten to turn you to toast, nothing will still be able to move the Blob, and Magneto will still proclaim “welcome to die” and call you an “X-chicken.”

Just Picked Up Risk:Factions Thanks to Free MS Points

I have accumulated 500 MS points since using the Bing Rewards program, and I have been looking for a 400 point game to get off of XBLA. Luckily I saw a tweet last week indicating that Risk:Factions would be on sale this week for 400 points, so I made sure to pick that up today. I love Risk, and enjoyed the trial game which I played a few weeks back. This will make it a breeze to cure my Risk itch when I feel like breaking out the board game but have no one around to play against.

    PSN Demo Review: Sonic 4

Sonic 4 is yet another classic game revamp with today’s hardware to give it the nostalgic feel while still looking damn good. Mega Man did it, Super Mario did it, heck, even Earth Worm Jim had a tweeked game (mind you it was still the original game for the most part), so popping out a Sonic game along the same wave length was a great idea. Sega has been claiming from the start that it picks up where Sonic & Knuckles left off, and maintains the same look and feel. Once the demo popped up the other night, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Sadly, the demo only allows you to play through Act 1 of the first stage, so there isn’t a whole lot to do, but you do get a feel for what’s in store.

First and foremost, I have to say that the game is beautiful. The graphics are simply amazing, and you can really tell that it incorporates today’s technology while still sticking to a classic 2D Sonic game. It really feels like you’re playing an HD remake of the classic Genesis game, except that the world and enemies are different. The game plays the same as the originals, where you run, jump, and roll around collecting rings and busting up robots to release little woodland critters on your way to the end of the stage. Of course, there are a few things that are different.

X-Men Arcade Game Coming to PSN/ XBLA!!!

You read that right folks…the classic 90′s arcade game X-Men is coming to the major consoles via downloadable goodness. I first heard about this in an article  from Joystiq, who are currently covering Comicon, and the game was announced by Marvel today. In case you forgot or don’t know, this was an amazing unit, as most of the arcade cabinets were shaped oddly to allow for two screens, so that six players could squeeze together much easier than if it was a standard cabinet. However, I do remember playing this game once or twice on a normal cabinet that only allowed four players.

That being said, it has been confirmed that the game, which will be available over PSN and XBLA “soon”, will feature up to six players online. The article I read did not mention how many players will be allowed to play locally. This is a day one purchase for me, no questions asked. Well maybe one question…”WHY THE HELL DID IT TAKE SO FREAKING LONG?!” Oh, and make that another question: Do I pick this up on the 360 or the PS3?!

I will definitely be keeping an eye for when the release date and the price are made official.

    Upcoming October Gaming

October is now upon us, and there are quite a few decent games coming out this month. It took me awhile to sort through what I really wanted, but there are two titles coming out that I will definitely be playing in Octoer. Luckily, with Fable II on it’s way back to Gamefly, I am able to select any of the October releases to play. The other I have already pre-ordered.

With Fable II shipped back, I could pick any of the releases of 10/19 and 10/26, and there were four large tempting ones: Smackdown vs. Raw 2011, Fallout: New Vegas, Fable III, and Star Wars: Force Unleashed 2. I loved the other games in each of these games’ series, so it was hard to decide which was best. I loved Fallout 3 to no end, and played through it three times, and would probably love going through a fourth. I enjoyed Fable II, and am really curious to see if Fable III is successful in improving upon what it’s already accomplished. As for Star Wars: Force Unleashed, I never got the full experience; I played through it on the Wii and never the PS3 or 360, but I still enjoyed the general story and looked forward to the sequel. But in the end, I decided on New Vegas.

Getting Free MS Points Using Bing

So I read online a few days ago that Bing was having a special promotion. Basically by downloading the Bing toolbar to your PC and using it for searches, you can earn Bing reward points, which can then be redeemed for stuff. One of the “stuff” you can snag is MS points. Basically, 100 Bing points = 100 MS points, and not to mention the fact that you get 250 points for signing up. You can check it out for yourself here. I’ve been playing with it a for a few days to see what exactly is needed.

First off, I had to install the Bing toolbar onto my PC. The site said that I had to install the toolbar onto IE, but I was able to pop it on FF, and have been using it and receiving points, so I guess that works. So that nabbed me 250 points, which I quickly redeemed. Then you get one Bing point for every two searches you make using Bing, for a maximum of ten per day. So each morning I get up and spend a minute or two doing twenty random searches, just to get my quota filled for the day. Also, on the first day I started this, there were some “offers” located on the Bing rewards toolbar. Basically it said “click this link to learn more about the Beatles and earn three points”, and sure enough it took me to some article about the Beatles. Same for another similar offer that taught me the wonders of Charlie Brown comics. These offers were available the first day I started this, and there were five of them. Once you do them they remain on your list of offers, but are marked off as being used. Sadly, no other offers have become available like that over the last three days. So basically within the past four days I earned over 50 points, and was able to snag a third 100 MS point offer and redeemed it this morning. However, the big catch is that the “ten points a day in searches” offer seems to only be good until October 2. After that date, I’ll be curious to see what is necessary to continue this offer.

My biggest concern is how to finally receive these MS points. I redeemed them the day I started, which was four days ago on Sunday. Since then I have received three emails telling me that I had three orders for 100 MS points each that was “under review”, and have not heard about how to redeem them finally. I don’t know if they will be postal mailing me a code for each order, or if they will e-mail me a code for each order, or if they wait a certain amount of time and then send everything out in one lump sum…these details are scarce as of right now. Still, it’s not costing me anything to do it, and while I miss the ol’ google searches, putting up with Bing will be worth it if it eventually leads to a few free XBLA games a year.

XBLA Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

I recently received a free copy of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light from a Good Samaritan I know from the co-optimus site. I’ve been rocking through the game and enjoying every minute of it. Initially I wasn’t interested in the game, since I never played any of the previous Tomb Raider titles. However, when I found out that this game was a top-down twin-stick shooter, I was watching it closely. Now that I’ve had some time with it, I think it’s safe to say that it is a very solid downloadable title.

The basic premise of the game is that Lara Croft chases some dudes into a temple and they all end up awakening an evil spirit, who will destroy the world at dawn. Lara teams up the the Guardian of Light, and the two of them set off through the temple, attempting to track down and stop the evil spirit from making his move. Thus, the game is initially a co-op title, with a player able to control Lara and one to control the Guardian. Sadly, the online co-op is not available yet, and since this is one game I won’t be able to get Shell into, I have not been able to try out the local co-op yet. That being said, I have not been able to personally play as the Guardian yet, as the single player campaign only has you playing as Lara. So this is mostly a review of the campaign, from a single-player perspective (though I will update this entry once I am able to get a shot at co-op.)

    PSN Review: Deathspank

I am a huge fan of hack-and-slash, dungeon crawler RPGs, so when Deathspank came out and I saw that it fit the genre nicely, I just had to check it out. Deathspank is a solid game for the PSN…that being said, it would not have held up well if it was a PS3 disc-based game. While the game succeeds in many ways, there are a few factors holding it back from being an extremely epic RPG experience.

You take on control of Deathspank, a hero for hire (who wears  a magical purple thong) who sets out to claim a magical artifact, which he believes will make him the strongest hero in the world. Deathspank will explore a somewhat small world that does have a few unique environments, but at the same time is limited in the amount of space given to play in. Like any good hack-and-slash dungeon crawler, Deathspank will dispatch countless hordes of enemies with a wide variety of weapons, armors and magical potions. Up to four weapons can be equipped at a time and are hotkeyed to the controller, and potions and other items can be hotkeyed to the directional pad. As enemies are slain and quests are completed, you will gain xp. When Deathspank levels, he is given a choice of three stats and can raise one of them up a level. For example, at level 2 he may choose to raise his melee damage, ranged damage, or speed at which he moves by 5% (this is just an example, I don’t recall what the exact three choices were at level 2.) Other stats to be raised include amount of money dropped by enemies and the ability to equip weapons and armors that are up to two levels higher than your character.

More Free 360 Swag: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light

So as if winning a brand new Xbox 360 and a copy of Crackdown 2 wasn’t enough,  I just got Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (a fun twin-stick shooter), a $15 purchase on XBLA, for free. I received a message from one of the “regulars” on co-optimus.com, explaining that he had an extra game code. Just to clarify, this was a random regular like myself, not one of the staff members. He saw that I had mentioned that I was interested on the forums board, so he offered his extra code to me. Now that was down-right decent of him, and I look forward to checking out the game tomorrow (I would have tonight but I was playing Resistance 2 at the time).

My First 24 Hours of 360 Goodness: The Games

So I previously went over my first impressions of the system itself, and what it offers. Now I’m going to spend some time talking about the great games I have gotten to play, and there are some great ones indeed!

    Castle Crashers:

This is one of the games that had me drooling for a 360, especially since first getting to actually play it at PAX. It’s still in the works for a PS3 release, but it took so dang long so this was one of the first games I snagged. Castle Crashers is a beautiful, colorful, BLOODY beat em’ up, straight out of the old school days. Up to four players (locally or online, which is awesome) can team up with a character of their choice and lay the smackdown on dozens of minions and giant bosses. The leveling system is great, where if you die on a level you maintain all the gold, weapons, creatures, and XP you earned, and it all adds in to the awesome replay value of the game. This is the game I was waiting for, and now that I have it, I see that it’s everything I thought it would be and more. If you have a 360 and don’t have this game, then you’re a fool!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 1989 Classic Arcade

This game is straight out of the old school arcade we all know and love. The graphics and gameplay are all down right as they were…no lame “revival” like Turtles in Time Re-Shelled was. There is really little to say about the awesomeness of this game: old school arcade beat em’ up! The only thing they did was make it so that you have unlimited continues, so no worries about losing your last quarter by being turned into a little turtle by Shredder!!!

    tmntarcade-small

    Mass Effect:

After playing the crud out of Dragon Age: Origins through four different play-throughs, I was extremely jealous of Biowares sci-fi RPG Mass Effect. I didn’t think it was a game to own, so I rented this one from Gamefly so I could play through it and then send it back for Mass Effect 2. I am about an hour or two into the game, and so far it is a great combination of RPG goodness in a sci-fi environment. It has everything that Dragon Age had: several backgrounds and classes to choose from, a ton of weapons and equipment to keep checking on, and special abilities for you and your party to make short work of your enemies. I can’t say too much more since I’m still in the beginnings of the game, but I’m impressed by what I’ve seen so far.

    masseffect-small

    Crackdown 2:

Crackdown 2 is an interesting third-person shooter that takes place in a city overrun by zombie-ish creatures (referred to simply as “freaks”.) Your mission is to help clear them out of the city by running or driving around and fulfilling various missions. I have not personally played online yet, but when you do your friends can come and join in your world to help you on your missions. I haven’t put much time into the game yet, so I don’t have too much to say about it yet, but when I do a full review will be forth-coming.

    Left 4 Dead:

This is hands-down one of the definitive games for the 360. Left 4 Dead is a FPS that sticks you smack dab in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. You and three allies (either actual players or AI) must race through the level and try to survive to the end, where rescue awaits. The typical weapons of pistols, rifles, shotguns, and machine guns are what stands between you and hordes of various zombies, all of which move extremely quickly (no shambling here.) I played through two levels (each level contains five stages) with some people online last night and had a true blast. This is a game that I can’t see ever getting old, and was definitely something I was missing on the PS3.

Last week, the good folks at co-optimus.com had a contest to celebrate the fact that their database now contains over 1,000 co-op games. As I was getting ready to eat breakfast Sunday morning, I received a PM from the owner of the site, with the subject being “Grand Prize Winner.” I got excited and started cursing, and Shell was confused. I ran into the computer room and went online to read the PM, and sure enough, I had been selected as the grand prize winner. The prize is a 250gb 360 slim, as well as a copy of Crackdown 2. I gave my info to the site owner, and I should have the 360 in my possession by the weekend.

    xbob360

I never talked much smack about the 360, and I was actually on the verge of buying one when I was ready to purchase a current gen system back in 2008. However, in the end I was diswayed from the 360 due to the RROD problems, as well as the high start-up cost (having to buy a system, a $90 wireless device for it, and having to purchase a Gold account just to play online.) These issues, coupled with the fact that I got a PS3 for $100 off, caused me to go with Sony over Microsoft. However, I always wanted to get a 360 as well, especially within the past year as I have made friends with people online who only have 360s, and not PS3s. Read More »

    Now I Want a 360

So as I have saying over the weekend and today, I was able to finally check out the 360 at PAX, and I liked what I played.

First off, remember that I am not a 360 hater. I don’t necessarily believe that the PS3 > 360, or that I hate the 360 simply because I have a PS3 instead. When I was ready to jump into the current-gen consoles, I was tossed up between the PS3 and 360. My friend and I had lengthy conversations about the pros and cons of each, and for awhile it looked like I would get a 360, for the lower price and the far-superior online service. However, one of the biggest problems was that I had never touched a 360 before. None of my friends ever had an Xbox or a 360, so I never knew how it was. Also, I was skeptical of the 360′s life due to all the RROD reports, and I didn’t want to think about the chance that I would have to worry about getting my console fixed. So when Wal-Mart happened to have a $100 deal on the PS3, I was quickly sold, and that laid it to rest. Read More »

    Games Played at PAX East

Obviously one of the major draws of PAX is the games. I got the opportunity to play quite a few. Of all the games I played, only a small handful were unreleased…many of them are games that are already available that I have never had the opportunity to play. So heres the games, in no particular order:

    • Crackdown 2 (360): We waited on line a little under an hour to check it out. It was a free for all game with men in armor suits who carried rocket launchers. The object of the game was to grab an orb and then run away and stay alive for as long as possible. So the main target of the game was always whoever had the orb. I was not a fan of the game. The controls were pretty bad, and navigating the city was horrible. The player cannot fly or run up the side of buildings, so you have to jump to latch on, but you can only latch on at particular spots, so a good chunk of the game was spent trying to get over a building so I could continue on in the match. Overall, I wasn’t a fan of what I played, which was only the versus mode. Apparently there is a single player and co-op story mode, but I was not able to play that.
    • Charlie Murder (XBLA): Charlie Murder is a fun four player beat em up a la Castle Crashers. The four playable characters were basically punks, and ran around beating the pulp out of other punks. Each character had a special move involving a guitar, as the character I was using summoned forth saw blades that ran across the screen cutting down enemies in their path. The game looked pretty good, with large, cartoonish characters and enemies, and I would definitely purchase it if I had a 360 when it comes out. Definitely keep an eye out for it.

The game came out about a month or two ago on the XBLA, and I have been waiting patiently for it to arrive on PSN. It was slated for an August release, but that came and went, and I lost hope. Then as usual, it was a complete surprise when it appeared last night on PSN. I really hate how Sony gives no advance notice on what to expect on PSN Thursdays…

So the game is a remake of the arcade version of the original Turtles in Time. However, many changes have been made, and most of them for the worse. The biggest change is the new graphics, which were redesigned to be modern/new age, not the old school arcade look. They failed, and the graphics are dark and just dont look very sharp. I definitely would have preferred the old school sprites to what they gave us. The second big difference is the loss of the Technodrome level. In the original, the fourth stage was the Technodrome, where Shredder was the boss. To beat him, you had to stun and then throw Footsoldiers into the screen. It was classic. However, the remake totally removed this level and boss battle, which was a disappointment.
