Fifteenth Platinum Trophy: WWE ’12

One of the lamest-looking WWE Platinums, and one of the most annoying to get

Gotta catch ‘em all: I have the Platinum trophies for Smackdown vs. Raw 2010, Smackdown vs. Raw 2011, WWE Legends of WrestleMania and WWE Allstars. Thus I was destined to continue the tradition and work towards the Platinum trophy in WWE ’12. It was a mediocre one…there were a lot of easy trophies, but two in particular were a real pain to snag.

“You’ve Got Fans” was a particularly difficult one to obtain, and it should not have been. The trophy requires you to upload something to the servers and then have five players download it. Well the big problem is that the servers were constantly down. If you’ve played WWE games in the past then you’re used to servers being down or laggy when trying to get an online match going. But the servers are so messed up in WWE ’12 that it took me a couple of days just to get on long enough to completely upload a CAW (create-a-wrestler.) So with me having a hard enough time just uploading, it took even longer for five people to find my CAW and then download it. The servers have been cruddy since the game launched in Novemeber, and to this day they have not been fixed. It’s a shame not only for people who want to get this trophy, but for others who just want to download a crappy Hulk Hogan CAW that has an overall stat value of 100. Read More »

With the start of the new year, I will once again take a brief look at my ten most popular blogs of the past year (thanks to the cool tools available through Google Analytics. I’m really curious to see which old blogs are still getting activity, and which new ones were strong enough to make their way into the top ten. Before I get into that, I just want to spout out some statistical info:

  • My site had 69,771 unique visitors over the past year
  • 9,536 of these visitors liked my blog so much that they became repeat visitors
  • 42,852 of these viewers found my blog off of a typical Google search, while 16,831 came across my site via StumbleUpon
  • 42,969 visitors were from the United States, 6,282 were from Canada and 5,536 were rocking from the UK
  • The average visitor spent 31 seconds looking at a particular post before leaving the site
  •  31,240 visitors used Firefox, 20,858 used Chrome, 11,540 used Internet Explorer and 8,665 used Safari (I wonder if next year will be the year that Safari beats IE)
  • Now on to the blogs!!!

Undertaker vs. Mankind at WrestleMania 28

In April I reported on how Undertaker had won his nineteenth WrestleMania match against Triple H. In that post, I had said that Triple H was one of the few left who I thought worthy of facing Undertaker at WrestleMania 20. Well, on Monday Mick Foley returned to the WWE. With “Mankind” back, I’m going to go ahead and say that Undertaker’s opponent at WrestleMania 20 will should be Mick Foley. When I was watching wrestling during the late 90s I loved watching Taker and Mankind go at it, and I would love to see them do it next year. As I’ve said before, I have a gut feeling that Undertaker will be retiring following WrestleMania 20, and I think Foley would be the ultimate final opponent to either break the streak or let it stand at twenty wins. The two of them had such epic rivalries that it would only seem right to have the Undertaker’s final match be against the “Hardcore Legend.”

So my prediction, stated on November 17, 2011, is that WrestleMania XXVIII will feature Undertaker vs. Mick Foley. Do you think Foley would make a good opponent for Undertaker, or would you rather see someone else take him on? Let me know, as long as you don’t mention John Cena.

Anyone who follows my blog knows I get crazy around this time of year when THQ starts releasing relevant information about their annual WWE new release. This year is no different, and they’ve done quite a bit of revamping since last year’s Smackdown vs. Raw 2011. Just remember, I am a fan of the game series, not of the actual WWE programming and do not watch it on television.  So what exactly are the new features? Read on:

    • Title: That’s right, THQ decided to drop the “Smackdown vs. Raw” title from now on and are sticking with just “WWE”. It makes a heck of a lot of sense and is something they should have down a long time ago. The first couple of SvR games were true to their name, as there were drafts between the shows in-game and there was a “Be a GM” mode where you had to get more money and viewers than the competing brand. But that all stopped over the past few years and it’s been more about WWE in general and less about a conflict between these two shows. So I’m totally happy with calling it “WWE ’12″ as opposed to “Smackdown vs. Raw 2012″ as it’s a heck of a lot easier to say and write. Read More »

Eleventh Platinum Trophy: WWE All Stars

I was about eight online matches away from receiving the final two trophies in WWE All Stars (Main Eventer and All Trophies Awarded, which is the Platinum) when disaster struck and the PSN went down. The past twenty-some odd days have been a haze as I struggled to survive playing online offline games, knowing that the Platinum trophy was so close yet so far. So this morning, once I downloaded the new firmware and changed my password, the first thing I did was jump on All Stars and start grinding towards my 50th win.

Initially I was going to be boosting because two friends who I’ve boosted with previously were online. However, neither one wanted to, so I sucked it up and spent the next two hours getting my wins the old fashioned way…beating the shit out of noobs online. I ended up going for 11-3 today, with three of those wins not registering due to rage quitters. After my 50th online win (I beat the floor with Ultimate Warrior’s ass as Kane) I was pleased to hear the awesome ding of the last two trophies unlocking. I enjoyed playing All Stars online, and I will still be going back on to kick butt. I’ll probably start playing more ranked matches just to get my official stats up.

As for the next Platinum, I have no idea. I don’t have any games currently that seem to be Platniumable, so it will probably be some time before I get another.

There is only one trophy standing between me and Platinum goodness…the “Main Eventer” trophy which requires you to win fifty online matches. I was really going to do this the old-fashioned way by pummelling my opposition, as I am pretty good at the game, if I do say so myself. Sadly, the online scene is full of rage quitters who will exit the game just before you win a match. Not only do you not gain the win, but you can be booted back to the main menu, to the PS3 XMB, or even get frozen and have to do a hard reset. It’s just not worth the frustration.

So the past few days I’ve been “boosting” with other players I met either here on this very blog or on one of the forums I frequent. Basically we agree to go take turns allowing each player to get a win. After a few days of this, I currently have forty-one wins, meaning I’m only nine away from that beautiful Plat. Hopefully soon!!!!

    Thank You Edge (Adam Copeland)

When I first got into wrestling in ’98, there were quite a few superstars I enjoyed. Undertaker, Triple H, Ken Shamrock, “The Lethal Weapon” Steve Blackman…just to name a few. These were guys who I enjoyed watching simply because I thought they were awesome. Then there was another group of individuals who really stuck out to me…three guys who were relatively “young” in their careers, but I would turn to my friends during PPVs and say “this guy is going to be WWF Champion one day. These three guys were Edge, Bradshaw, and Test. I didn’t call it with Test, but I was right on guessing that Edge and Bradshaw would enjoy the championship gold in the future. But the one person I do want to talk about is, obviously, Edge.

On Monday, Edge came out to the ring and announced his retirement due to injuries. I was shocked when I stumbled across the news on Tuesday. Here’s a video of his speech:

Dead Nation Will Be Next Platinum

After finishing up a co-op campaign on Grim difficulty, it’s only a matter of time before Dead Nation becomes my next Platinum. I’ve been playing the game with a friend during the day after I get home from work, and it’s only a matter of time before we receive the precious Platinum…my guestimate is about a week, seeing how I’m only two trophies behind.

On the WWE All Stars front, I’m also pretty darn close, with only one trophy to go before hitting Plats. However, the missing trophy requires me to win fifty online matches, and as of right now I’m at twenty-seven. I would have had at least thirty-two by now if not for rage quitters who will exit the game/ turn off their consoles right as I dish out my finisher. This causes the game to disconnect and not register the win. Thus, it will be quite some time before I amass the fifty wins.

I’m getting close to unlocking two more Platinum trophies, but I’m not sure which will be hitting first.

In WWE All Stars, I’ve unlocked the vast majority of the trophies. The only ones remaining are the online ones (win 10 matches, win 25 matches, win 50 matches, and win 10 matches in a row) and two massive ones; one requiring me to defeat the entire roster with Triple H and one requiring me to not only defeat the entire roster but also clear all three Path of Champions with Ultimate Warrior. Once I snag these, I will be in Platinum paradise. Read More »

I may not follow the WWE these days, but I’m still a huge Undertaker fan. I would like nothing more than to see him immortalized by retiring after going 20-0 at WrestleMania. Last night, Undertaker got one step closer to this by beating Triple H in a No Holds Barred match with his signature submission move, the Hells Gate. Prior to last night, his record at the event looked like this:

WrestleMania VII (1991) - Jimmy Snuka
WrestleMania VIII (1992) - Jake “The Snake” Roberts
WrestleMania IX (1993) - Giant Gonzalez
WrestleMania XI (1995) - King Kong Bundy
WrestleMania XII (1996) - Kevin Nash “Diesel”
WrestleMania XIII (1997) - Sycho Sid
    WrestleMania XIV (1998) - Kane
WrestleMania XV (1999) - Big Boss Man
    WrestleMania XVII (2001) - Triple H
WrestleMania XVIII (2002) - Ric Flair
    WrestleMania XIX (2003) - Big Show & A-Train
    WrestleMania XX (2004) - Kane
WrestleMania XXI (2005) - Randy Orton
WrestleMania XXII (2006) - Mark Henry
    WrestleMania XXIII (2007) - Batista
    WrestleMania XXIV (2008) - Edge
WrestleMania XXV (2009) - Shawn Michaels
WrestleMania XXVI (2010) - Shawn Michaels

    PS3 Review: WWE All Stars

This game is one heck of a slobber knocker as THQ redeems themselves for WWE Legends of WrestleMania with their newest title, WWE All Stars. I have been following this game for quite a few months now, and the end product was as good as I expected. First and foremost, this is NOT a wrestling sim like the Smackdown vs. Raw series. All Stars is a fighting game in every sense of the word, from having insane moves, devastating combos, tons of lockables…and the simple fact that it’s easy to pick up and play but challenging to master. That being said, I did not intend to make this a comparison of All Stars and SvR, but I ended up doing just that. This game is definitely on the radar of any SvR fan, so I think it is inevitable to compare the two at some points as a means of giving examples of what to expect.

The roster of characters is pretty darn expansive for a fighting game. There are thirty wrestlers to initially choose from, with at least thirteen more revealed as future DLC. They are divided by old school legends and today’s current roster, and this really does make it the best roster for a WWE game ever. Tons of old favorites are represented like Stone Cold, Rock, Hogan, Macho Man, Andre, Ultimate Warrior and more, and they even have their classic attires. Then you have some of today’s hottest stars including Undertaker, Triple H, Edge, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, John Cena, and others as well. Together, it is a very well-rounded cast of wrestlers and is definitely one of the biggest selling points for the game.

But I’ve talked enough about all this basic info over the past three months, so now I’ll go more into what I got out of the actual game. Read More »

    WWE Allstars: Challenging the Undertaker

One of the game modes in the upcoming WWE Allstars game is “Path of Champions”, in which you will be able to challenge either the Undertaker, Randy Orton, or DX. You will have to fight your way through ten matches, all culminating in the final battle with your chosen opponent. Each Path of Champions storyline is opened by a vignette with that super star, and the Undertaker/Paul Bearer intro is just popping with classic greatness. Take a look at the video, which is voiced by Taker and Bearer themselves:

I think it’s safe to say that when this game arrives on Tuesday from Amazon, the first thing I’m going to do is create a BigBadBob CAW and then dive right in to challenge the Undertaker.

    WWE Allstars Match: Grapplers

We’ve seen the brawlers, the acrobats, and the big man…so the only class left is the grapplers! THQ has released the match/commentary combo on the grappler class, which pits Bret Hart against Triple H. Check it out here:

    YouTube Preview Image

The grappler class looks pretty sweet with those chain grapples. Within the first seconds of the match, Hart gives Triple H a neckbreaker into a backbreaker into a another backbreaker…all without ever letting go! And that combo took out quite a chunk of Triple H’s health. One of the developers mentions that the grappler class is one of the more hardcore classes and takes a lot of getting used to in order to successfully chain those grapples together. He even mentioned at one point that there is a potential to chain six to seven grapples in one combo! That’s nuts!!!

I really wish they had included the grappler class in the demo, since this is the class I am looking forward to checking out the most. I can’t wait for next week to start exploring the full potential of all the wrestlers and classes.

WWE Allstars Demo Available Now on XBLA…Later Tonight on PSN

It’s almost here…only seven days to go until the release of THQ’s WWE Allstars video game. Today THQ released a demo on XBLA (and later tonight via PSN)  that allowed players to check out a singles match as either Ultimate Warrior or Rey Mysterio. Since I hate Mysterio with a passion, I selected Ultimate Warrior and took Mysterio to school. I should note that I downloaded the 360 version because I didn’t feel like waiting for some random time tonight whenever Sony decided to update PSN.

Since it’s a different style of game, the controls are nothing like SvR’s, and I was hoping that the demo would come with a tutorial of sorts, which it does not. So there was a lot of guess work as I punched, kicked, and slammed Mysterio around. The first match went back and forth, and eventually Mysterio was able to squeak a win from me after hitting the 619. The second match I did better, and was able to give him a Gorilla Pres Slam for the win.

Additional Character Announced for WWE Allstars: Honky Tonk Man

I previously reported on the roster for WWE Allstars, which contained the full game roster plus the first batch of DLC. THQ today revealed that at some time in April, there will be an additional wrestler available as free DLC. Speculation ran wild, and I heard rumors that it was Goldust, Rick Rude, Diesel, Rick Flair, JBL, and others. In the end, THQ announced that it was the Honky Tonk Man. THQ had a Facebook app going (which I did not participate in), and if the app got enough fans or likes or something like that, THQ promised to give fans an additional character.

While Honky Tonk Man is not who I preferred, a free character with more moves is going to be a welcome bonus to this game. Unlike Smackdown vs. Raw, I see myself playing with all the wrestlers in the game, since it is a fighting game. I sure hope they keep pumping out more DLC characters!

    WWE Allstars Match: Brawlers

THQ released another class match today, this time focusing on the Brawlers. The two wrestlers are Sheamus and Roddy Piper, and it’s a pretty back and forth match. As usual, there is developer commentary to go along with the match. Check out the match here:

The Brawler wrestlers look like they a pretty quick and easy to play class as their continuous strikes constantly pummel their opponents. With similar matches shown for the Acrobat and Big Man classes, the only one left is the Grapplers…and that’s one that I’m pretty excited to see. I’m sure they will be releasing that video sometime next week.

    WWE Allstars Match: Acrobats

THQ has went ahead and popped a full match on youtube focusing on the acrobat class. The video is about eight minutes long, and includes a full match between John Morrison and Shawn Michaels, who are both in the acrobat class in WWE Allstars. While the match is going on, THQ representatives are giving commentary on the match and the game in general. It’s quite interesting and really gives a full feel for what the game is like. The game is very fluid, and the contact recognition is superior to SvR 2011, meaning that the wrestlers on screen actually connect, and you don’t see body parts floating through other body parts. As is to be expected, the acrobat class is fast and can reach the top rope extremely quickly, much like similar light weights in SvR. I also have to say that I like the look of the character selection screen…it’s just like SvR 2011 but it works  so much better in Allstars, mainly because it gives it that fighting/arcade game feel. Another interesting fact mentioned is that a wrestler’s entire career is taken into account, so wrestlers like Undertaker and HBK who have been around for many years will be pulling off vintage moves that they may not necessarily perform these days.

Also, it is hinted that there will be other videos up in the near future focusing on the other classes; grappler, brawler, and big man.
