Under the Weather

I woke up this morning feeling a little blah. As the day went on it got worse, and by the time I got home from work I was spent. It’s just a whole mishmosh of common symptoms such as a sore, dry throat, headache, and the general feeling of knowing you feel like crud and are sick. If anything, I’m glad it’s happening now, so that I will hopefully overcome this in time for the wedding, which is ONLY TWO WEEKS AWAY!!!

Wedding Fast Approaching

The wedding is in pretty much a month, and things have been going crazy. We met with our priest last week to go over all the final details and what-not. We met up with the DJ today, who seems pretty cool. He promised plenty of inflatable guitars for all, so that will rock! The rsvp’s for the invitations are pretty much all in, with just a few stragglers we are waiting to hear from, but it looks like it’s going to be a pretty decent-sized party, though not as big as we anticipated.

This weekend is also gonna be jampacked with my bachelor party and Shell’s bachelorette party. Shell will be heading down to NYC with her bridesmaids and friends for a night on the town, and then crashing at my sister’s place. As for me…I don’t know. Apparently Steve has decided that it should be a surprise, so I am in the dark as to what he has planned for the weekend. I am driving down to his place Friday night, and then Saturday we are off to the mysterious destination of my bachelor party. I’m looking forward to it, and seeing some friends and family, though I don’t know who exactly is coming (aside from Steve and my bro-in-law Nick).

No need to worry…when I eventually return on Sunday, I will post up (non-incriminating) pics of the weekend festivities. After this weekend, we are into May, and that’s the WEDDING MONTH!!! It’s coming up pretty fast, and I’m excited…and probably a little nervous…but more excited than anything.

Busy Weekend Coming Up

With April winding down and May (the month of our wedding) fast approaching, our weekends are guaranteed to get busier and busier. This weekend is no exception.

Tonight we have to head over to the church after we get off of work to have our final meeting with the priest. We will have to be making all the plans, such as how we are going to be situated and how the ceremony is going to go, as well as go over the readings we selected for the mass. Fun in a bun for sure.

Tomorrow is kind of a lax day, but I am taking Shell geocaching around town. There are a lot of parks nearby that have multiple caches. I am going to start by going back to the town park and let her find the two that I already found there. Then there is another there that I have not yet found. After that, I would like to go to two more parks in town that  have two caches each. Should be a fun-filled day of hiking, exploring, and enjoying the great outdoors.

Sunday is a pretty busy day. After church in the morning, we have to hit the mall for a day of shopping. Shell wants to buy a new wardrobe for her bachelorette party and the honeymoon. As for me, I will probably be buying some new clothes for the honeymoon as well (not because I want to, but because Shell believes that all my clothes are “faded”.) I also want to stop over at Gamestop and see what my gift card will get me. Later in the day, Shell also has to go to David’s Bridal for a final fitting on her dress.

So there you have it…a jam-packed weekend. I am actually looking forward to the weekend since this is the first time since November that I have had a full week of work, so I can actually relish in the time off!

Our Wedding Cake Topper

As some may know, we had a tough time coming up with a cake topper. While the wedding is Tuscan-themed, we still wanted to have a unique cake topper…something special that identified with us personally. After much searching and browsing, we eventually decided to get a custom one done. The cake topper we chose basically has the bride (Shell) dragging the groom (me) away from his video games. The person I purchased it from customized the topper via the figure’s hair color, the game being played, the system and controllers (PS3, naturally), and the beverage of choice (in this case- Sam Adams.)

Overall, I’m pleased with it. While it may not match the grape-covered cake we will be getting, it symbolizes us in a humorous way. Me thinks it will get plenty of laughs (and probably some confused faces) when the guests see it on the day of the wedding.

How I Spent my Valentine’s Day

Heres what Shell and I did for Valentine’s Day!

  • Woke up. I made an egg breakfast
  • Exchanged chocolate (she got Hershey Pot o’ Gold, I got Russle Stovers)
  • Showered and got dressed
  • Went to church
  • After mass, met with the church director to begin the interview process for our wedding
  • Came home and had lunch
  • Watched “Pretty in Pink” (I had never watched it before…I kept thinking it was Sixteen Candles)
  • Hung out on the couch and watched TV
  • Went to Paolo Lombardi’s Ristorante (fancy Italian place) for dinner
  • Came home and watched “My Best Friend’s Girl” while eating chocolate-covered strawberries and spumoni
  • Went to bed

So yeah, we had a pretty busy day. Well, not necessarily busy, but we had stuff going on all day. It was a fun Valentine’s Day that I spent with my sweetie!

Our Sixth Anniversary

Six years ago today, Shell and I spent a snowy January 27th at Olive Garden and the mall for our first date. We have always celebrated January 27th as our anniversary, and this year will be the last time. Once we are married later this year, our anniversary will then be celebrated in May.

We fell in love very quickly, and are a great match. We have been through it all, including maintaining a relationship while at separate colleges,  and have had a blast living together for the past two years. I couldnt ask for anything more in a wife, and I look forward to marrying her.

My Wedding Band

Shell and I picked up our wedding bands today at the mall. I snagged mine from Kay Jewelers, and Shell ordered her from Belkin.

I ended up picking out this:

I know the pics are not the best quality. I blame the camera.

Anywho, I wanted the very best quality ring possible. Shell would not let me get The One Ring, and  unfortunately the jeweler did not have any adamantium or unobtainium in stock. Thus I went with the next best thing, being titanium. Its basically a black ring with a thin silver border. I have never worn rings before, and I did not want to get a “girly” gold ring, so I wanted something manly. I think this fits the bill pretty well, and Im pretty happy with my choice.

Gone Tux Shopping

Shell and I just got back from Men’s Wearhouse, where we were planning out my tux for the wedding. We got a few things decided already, but the place did not have tuxes in stock to try on, so I didnt try on the jacket. In a few weeks I will head back to Middletown, meet up with my groomsmen, and we will go the the Men’s Wearhouse down there for fittings and such.

While I didnt get what I wanted (top hat, coattails, white gloves, cane, monocle, etc- Shell calls it the “Monopoly Guy” and Steve calls it “Mr. Peanut”) I did score a victory with a pinstripe suit! Its not a very obvious pinstripe, as in its faint, so I liked it. The groomsmen will be getting a greenish vest and bow tie (to match the bridesmaid dresses), but I dont know what Im going to do. They say I should have a different vest to kind of stand out. The lady suggested that I use an ivory vest to match Shell’s dress, but their vest looked more like a yellow, and I hated it. Im thinking of maybe a silver or charcoal gray…I’ll have to try on different things when we go down for the fittings to see which looks good. Also, I was able to negotiate the shoes, and snagged some nice square shoes. I really hate those nasty pointed tux shoes.

Im still holding out for a hat. The “tux hat” they had was like one of those ridiculous zoot suit gangsta hats that are like five feet wide (and yes, the one in Mens Wearhouse actually did have a feather in it.) However, they do sell “non tux” hats, and the fedora looks nice. I dont know why, but I really want a nice hat. I have a thing for hats…

Honeymoon Booked

We got back from the travel agent, and the honeymoon is booked. We will be spending ten nights at Walt Disney World, at the Caribbean Beach resort. We threw on the park hopper passes, so we will be able to go to all the parks as often as we want. The parks we will be going to are the four main Disney ones…Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom (which Im really excited for since I havent been there yet) and MGM, which is now called something like Hollywood Studios or something like that. We decided not to go to any water parks because neither of us is very big on that…we are just as happy chilling in the hotel pool or whatever. We also got a  dining plan, which includes one “snack” (like a pretzel or ice cream), one “sit down service” (which will be any of the little fast food restaurants for lunch), and one dinner and dessert at a restaurant for each of us per day, which is sweet.

We didnt book the plane tickets yet. We want to use South Western since it is the only airline that will fly non-stop from Albany to Disney, and South Western also tends to be a little more affordable. My biggest concern with flying is doing as little actual flying as possible and spending as little time in airports waiting as possible, so the direct flight is a big deal to me.

Im pretty excited. I love Disney, and I know we will have a blast. The only other thing is that I want to also swing over to Sea World since I love marine animals/fish so much, but we will play that by year. I wish it was 2010 already!!!

Surviving Precana

Yesterday Shell and I had our precana. For those of you not familiar with the term, its basically a requirement that the church has on newly-engaged couples. In our case, we had to attend this “workshop” in order to get married at the church. Its basically where a bunch of engaged couples come together and discuss love, marriage, relationships, and all that stuff in terms of spirituality. Some of these things are actually full-on weekend retreats, but ours was only one day, from 8:30am-4:30pm. Needless to say, it was not how I envisioned my Saturday to be, so I was not exactly looking forward to it.

So we get to the location, and the place is pretty packed. I would say there were at least twenty couples with us, crammed into this small room with very uncomfortable seats. The precana was led by an older couple (prob. in their 50s or possible even early 60s). When we came in, they gave us a workbook that we would use for the remainder of the day and a nametag. I already wasnt looking forward to getting in front of all these people and talking about relationships and all this stuff. I didnt think it was going to be a good day.

It turned out not being all that bad.

And So Ends a Summer of Slacking…

Thats right. I have to report to my assigned high school at 7:45 tomorrow to meet with my student teacher and begin making plans, and the kids come back to school on Wednesday. It was a great summer (aside from college summer classes), and Shell and I got to do a lot. It was a nice break, because I had been working pretty much since I was 16, so it felt good to finally have a few months to totally relax.

But thats over. This week marks the beginning of me going crazy with lesson plans, grading papers, and also doing college work. Its going to be a hectic few months, with plenty of wedding planning (including Shells shower) to keep me occupied as well. However, this is of course the last semester. My student teaching assignment ends the day before Thanksgiving, and then college ends about two weeks later. Then I can snag my degree, and step out into the job market and start looking for a career. Its going to be hectic, stressful, and exciting, all rolled into one, and I am looking forward to it.

As I did last semester, I will use this blog to record my daily “journal” of how classes go and what not, so that I can use it to reflect on how things went.

Weekend at the Dutchess County Fair

We had another relaxing weekend this past week. Well, maybe not relaxing, but at least it was at home, in the area. On Saturday we got up and went to the gym. Afterwards we went out to the mall and did some shoppings for a bunch of stuff, including wedding invitation supplies. Then we came home, cooked dinner, and then just hung out the rest of the night.

Then on Sunday we went to church (finally). After church, we came home for a bit, then headed out to the Dutchess County Fair. We left the house around 2pm. We didnt end up parking until about 4:30 due to a heck of a lot of traffic outside the fair getting in. By the time we got in we were starving, so had an early dinner. Shell had a cheese steak, and I had a pork rib sandwich, which was lame. My pork sandwhich was like the one you would get in high school…small and thin. I was still hungry after that lame meal so I found a perogi station and got some. They were tasty, and stuffed with cheese, potato, and kelbasia. We then walked around and took in the sights and whatnot. Along the way I got gyped off by paying $6 for a lemonade from some random stand, while the other stands sold it for $4-5, depending on the stand. Shell also got a frozen banana that was dipped in chocolate and nuts.

There was some kind of mini-zoo there, which was cool. It starts off kind of lame with just some reptiles and birds. Then they brought out the big guns. First was an albino kangaroo. It was the weirdest thing I had ever seen. It was clearly a kangaroo, but it was all white, and had red eyes. Very odd. They also had two tiny tiger cubs, who were in the middle of eating their dinner of raw steaks. They were very cute. There were also some other interesting animals like fox (I dont get to see them too often…they are so tricky), bobcat, and lynx.

We then walked around some of the shops and demos and stuff, still taking in the sites. When we were done, we grabbed a bag of zeppili on the way out, which was very tasty. All in all, it was a good time. The Dutchess County Fair is the best one in our area, and we always have fun going.
