Shell and I just got back from our weekend excursion to Maine. We had wanted to go there before we moved down south, and Memorial Day weekend wasn’t only a four-day weekend, but it also happened to be our anniversary, so it made sense to kill a couple of birds with one stone. Our “Maine” destination was the city of Portland, but also had stops in Freeport, Old Orchard Beach, Kenebunkport, and Kittery. Here’s how things played out, and also some pics to go along with it:

We started out Friday morning bright and early at 8am for the four hour, forty-five minute car ride up to Portland. We decided not to go directly to Portland, and made a stop for lunch and exploring in the town of Freeport. The main attraction at Freeport was a series of outlet stores, the most impressive of which was L.L. Bean’s. They didn’t just have an outlet store…they had like an outlet campus/complex. There must have been at least five separate stores which specialized in different things, such as clothing, biking/sports, hunting & fishing, etc. It was all built on a beautiful grassy area and was very clean and well-kept. The other thing we did in Freeport was eat. Read More »

Heading to Portland, ME

Believe it or not, my first anniversary is coming up. It feels like only yesterday I was hung over and praying that I would feel better so that I could coherently say my vows at the alter…

But with our first anniversary coming up, Shell and I did want to go somewhere to celebrate. With us leaving for the Carolinas next month, we wanted to make sure we saw everything we wanted to see up here. We both realized that we had never been to Maine, so that’s where we’re headed. After scoping out a little and seeing what would be convenient for us, we saw that Portland was a bigger city with plenty to do that was also a closer drive for us than other major cities there.

So if anyone’s ever been to Portland and has some advice of things to check out or awesome restaurants, leave me a comment.

I was fiddling around on my Gamefly account today, and I was surprised to find that they had a full log of every game I ever rented from them, started from 2008 to the present. I decided to use this information to my advantage and factor in how many games I rented for the year 2010 and, based on the yearly membership price, determine if it was worth it. Below is a list of all the games I rented in 2010: Read More »

In order to try and make my site more accessible and less cluttered, I removed a lot of the personal stuff. I had about three pages with all kinds of personal information about my wife and myself, as well as a page devoted to our now-past wedding.

Now as you can see, the only pages that remain are the main ones, the reasons I built this site in the first place…video games. While I will continue to post the happenings in my personal life, the site is definitely going to take a turn to being geared towards other stuff that don’t necessarily have to do with me.

To those close friends and family members: the family site is going to kind of be the replacement to what I am taking away from here. Once again, if you need the address, hit me up.

Our Souvenirs from the Honeymoon

Of course we brought back some gifties for ourselves from Florida! When we went down there, our package came with a $500 gift card, so we bought more than we normally would have. Luckily the gift card for for anything, so we used it for alcohol, tips, occasional snacks, activities (like the boat and bike rentals) and other stuff. But I digress…here are the stupid little things we bought down there!

Magnets

souveniers-002-small souveniers-009-small

We bought a couple of magnets, mostly picture ones. We both loved the one with the cats, and I just have to find a nice picture of Loki and Odin to put in there. The Tinker Bell one Shell bought to bring to work with her, and the baby seal magnet we snagged at Sea World, just so we had a memory of the place.

Apron

souveniers-003-small

Knowing that I was going to be snagging a grill when we got back, I was sold on getting a Disney apron. There were quite a few choices, but in the end I went with the whole “Mickey Mouse” thing. You may think it’s lame, but I think it’s flippin’ sweet. Read More »

The Wonders of an HDTV

So just to bring everyone up to speed, I came back from the hotel the day after our wedding, opened our apartment door, and found a HDTV sitting in the living room, begging me to release it from its box. Steve, my best man, had snuck into my apartment the day of the wedding and planted the TV there as our wedding gift. So I finally have an HDTV! It’s a Samsung 40″ 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, and it’s wonderful. Let’s just say that soon after we got home, my father-in-law and I were busy getting it hooked up. I just couldn’t wait!

The picture is wonderful. Shell keeps saying that old movies in particular look like a “reality show”, in that movies that are like ten to twenty years old look like they were shot last year. And this is just DVDs…I can’t wait to try out some Blu-rays. Speaking of which, I went over to Netflix and we will now be receiving Blu-ray movies instead of DVDs. I’m really looking forward to really enjoying it! Read More »

Our Honeymoon: Day Eleven…the Last Day :(

Well, we are actually back in Albany now. I never got around to writing out the last post last night, so here is what we did on our last day in Florida yesterday.

We got up early and headed to the resort restaurant for breakfast. After that we went back, got ready for the day, and packed up. Check out time was at 11:00, so we brought our bags over to the front desk and had them hold it for the day. Our flight was at 7:35pm, and we were scheduled to take the 4:30 bus from Disney to the airport. So after dropping the bags off, we headed to Epcot to enjoy our last day as best we could.

We ate lunch at a German buffet called Biergarten. It was definitely one of the best buffets I’ve ever been to (sorry Pondo). There were all kinds of sausage, chicken snitzel, spetzel, meatballs, more sausage, as well as not so German things like turkey breast and pork roast. It was all pretty tasty, and I loved being able to try everything. I think I can honestly say that I do love German cuisine, but I just can’t get it enough anywhere. After lunch we headed out into the park. We went on this 45-minute Ellen DeGenerses ride, and all I can say is that I had my fill of her for the next ten years. We also went into the Epcot ball and did a ride called Spaceship Earth, which was basically a tour of human civilization. By the time all this was over, we had to catch the bus back to the resort and get ready to hop the plane.

We got to the airport and through security in no time, leaving us almost two hours to wait until our flight. We had dinner at Sbarros, which was horrible. I barely ate any of my baked ziti since it was gross and heavy, but at least they had good breadsticks. After dinner we sat around and waited for the plane. The flight was a pretty good one…we experienced absolutely no delays, had no turbulence the entire time, and got to Albany about ten minutes ahead of schedule. Not too shabby.

So that was the end of our honeymoon. We had a great time, and as we talked about it, we realized there was nowhere else we would have wanted to go. Disney may be seen first and foremost as the place to be for a family vacation, but it really is a romantic honeymoon location as well. The employees there, from the janitors and bus drivers to the ride operators and servers, are all extremely pleasant and always happy. We did not have one bad experience with anyone down there, and that says a lot for all the employees we had to interact with. Our resort was a perfect paradise, and definitely a major player for the best resort to honeymoon at. Thanks to the dining plan and our bonus gift card, we paid very little out of pocket. The gift card covered anything our dining plan didn’t (including all our souvenirs), and the only thing I paid out for was server’s tips. It really was a wonderful time, and we hope to go back again to re-live it all again.

This blog is coming to you live from Epcot, where we are awaiting the nightly fireworks display. Its pretty crowded but we found a nice grassy hill to lie on and wait for the show to start.

So today was a fun day at Sea World. We got there pretty early before it opened, so we were the first ones in. I rushed to this new coaster they have called “Manta” which you ride in while technically lying down. Its similar to the Superman ride at Six Flags. Shell chickened out but got a picture of me as I was going up the first ramp.

There were plenty of shows to see. We saw the big Shamu show, a dolphin show, a cat and dog show, and a sea lion show. There were also other fun things to do. I paid $10 so Shell could get eight fish heads and feed them to some stingrays. I originally bought four, but had to get another four when she wasted them by trying to shove them down the rays gills instead of their mouths (which are on their stomachs). There was also a neat ride kind of like Splash Mountain except you get a lot more wet…including your feet. For some reason the boats take in pools of water so all of a sudden your socks and shoes are sunk and soaking.

There were also plenty of animals to see including manateees, belugas, crocodiles, penguins, a polar bear, and more. The food was a lot cheesier than Disney, but we survived. The worst part was at the end of the day, when our shuttle back to the resort didn’t come and it took them almost an hour to get one there.

After Sea World we stopped at the hotel to change out of our salty wet clothes since they were covered in splashes from sting rays and dolphins. We then hopped the bus to Epcot for dinner at Tokyo Dining, an obviously Japanese restaurant. Shell had a sushi platter with some new things to try like squid and salmon roe. I had a grilled swordfish filet. Both dinners were excellent.

So we are now 15 minutes away from the fireworks display. We are sad that tonight is our last night, as we return tomorrow night to New York. However, I think we are both ready to come home and see our kitties. While it is our last night, I think the fireworks display will be a great way to end it.

I hope to have pics ready by this weekend.

Our Honeymoon: Day Nine

Today was a somewhat relaxing day. We had a slow morning poolside, just hanging out enjoying the sun. At around 1pm we headed for Downtown Disney for lunch and to hang out until dinner.

For lunch we hit a place called Earl of Sandwich, which had gourmet sandwiches, salads, and wraps. After lunch we hit up all the shops that are down there. We picked up some souveniers for ourselves and other goodies (including a giant lollypop for me and a custom-made darl chocolate pretzel for Shell.) There were enough shops that we finished up in time for our dinner reservation.

We had dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s Cafe. For dinner Shell had a really tastetacular macadamia-crusted chicken breast, and I went for beef goulash. I was jealous of Shells dinner…hers was much lighter and tastier than mine. For dessert we shared a slice of carrot cake and a personal key lime pie.

The bus ride back to the hotel was annoying because the driver was being trained. He had two trainers with him, and these three clowns took forever to get the bus to the hotel. A 15-minute trip turned into 45-minutes by the end. After we got back we headed to the beach area and just plopped our butts down and relaxed for over an hour.

Tomorrow will be busy, since we need to get up early to snag a bus to Sea World, and then dinner and fireworks at Epcot at night.

Today was a pretty good day. We got up a little later and headed to the Magic Kingdom around 10. Unfortunately it was nothing like Sunday, and there were a ton of people and a ton of lines. We ended up going back to our favorites like the Haunted Mansion, Pirates, and Splash Mountain. We had lunch at a basic Mexican restaurant in the park.

After lunch we went and did some more rides we enjoyed most. We didn’t get to do as much since the lines were so much longer, and we had to Fast Pass a couple of rides.Despite the crowds and heat (a rainless, hot day) we still had a great time. We both really enjoy the Magic Kingdom and were glad to hit it up twice while we were here.

For dinner we took to the monorail to the Polynesian Resort to have dinner at Ohana. Ohana is an interesting restaurant in that there is no menu and everything is served family style. They started us off with a loaf of coconut-lime bread, and then a salad with a honey-lime dressing. They then brought out wings, pork dumplings, broccoli, and noodles (kind of like lo mein). Then they came around with skewers of steak, chicken, shrimp, and pork. They also give you a trio of sauces to dunk the meat in. For dessert they bring out a bread pudding topped with vanilla bean ice cream and a banana fosters icing. To top it all off, the cook brought us out a special “celebration” dessert which was a chocolate lava cake smoothered with whipped cream. There was so much food and we didn’t finish anything! So yeah Mom, there was no ham and pineapple to be found!

Along with the food, the servers also get the kids into fun little dances and games. They had the kids do a race where they pushed a coconut across the floor with a broom and also a limbo contest. They also had a maraca parade which they stopped in front of our table so the kids could cheer us, and then they made us kiss in front of the kids, one who mockingly said “oooohhhh!” It was a really fun dinner with a great environment and delicious (and plentiful) food.

After dinner we hopped the monorail back to the Magic Kingdom, and then the bus back to the resort. Tomorrow will be a slow morning, and after lunch we will be going to Downtown Disney for dinner.

Today was a pretty lazy day. After a slow morning and breakfast at the resort, we went to the pool and did some laundry. It was here that we first experienced todays crazy weather, as there were frequent random rainstorms throughout the day.

After laundry and showering we went to lunch at the resort, and then headed back to the hotel to hang out. Eventually we headed out to Epcot, since we had dinner reservations at 5pm at San Angel Inn, a Mexican restaurant.

Before dinner we hung out in Mexico land in Epcot. There is a huge temple you go into, and inside is the restaurant, a bar, some shops and stalls, and stupid little water ride. Dinner was awesome. Shell had a pretty delicious margarita that was layered in several different flavors. For dinner she had a mole chicken meal, and I had carne con chile relleno, which was a tender steak on top of a bed of rice and then covered with a pablano pepper stuffed with cheese and refried beans. For dessert I went for a white chocolate mousse with fruit and Shell got a white chocolate bread pudding.

After dinner we went to Blizzard Beach to go mini golfing at Winter Wonderland. Its a Christmas-themed mini golf course that we have had been to previously and really enjoyed. We took plenty of silly pictures there as well which was a lot of fun. After the golf we headed back to the hotel room and called it a night. Tomorrow was a free day, so we are going to go back to the Magic Kingdom for the day tomorrow before heading over to the Polynesian resort for dinner.

We had a very busy day today at the Magic Kingdom. We jumped on the bus and got there a little after nine. For some reason, the park was empty, so from 9 til about 12ish we had less than 10 minute waits for rides, some of them in under 5 minutes or with no waits at all. So by the time we ate lunch at 11:30 we had breezed through Adventure Land, Frontier Land, and Liberty Square. We had almost no lines for a lot of the bigger rides like Splash Mountain, Runaway Train, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Haunted Mansion.

I think today was the first day we’ve been here that it didn’t rain. But you better believe it was a pretty hot day, even before noon. We just grabbed a burger for lunch, since the Magic Kingdom is kind of lame with lunches, and then jumped back into the rides. It was from here on out that the lines started, but they weren’t so bad. Our longest wait was probably about 40minutes for Peter Pan. All of the other rides the rest of the day were probably under 20 minutes. In fact, we didn’t need to Fast Pass anything today, something we did a lot of at Hollywood Studios. So we were able to hit Space Mountain and all the other rides in no time.

We had dinner reservations at Tonys for 6pm.Tony’s is an Italian restaurant that is based around the big Italian guy from “Lady & the Tramp.” Anywho, by 5ish we had gotten on all the rides we wanted to at the park, so we just shopped around until dinner time.Dinner was good, but fast. We both had pasta diavola…I have no idea if I’m spelling it right. It is an Italian dish I love which is pasta and seafood in a spicy tomato sauce. This one was not as spicy, but there was a lot of seafood, including salmon, calamari, shrimp, clams, and mussels. For dessert Shell got a pistachio creme bruelle which was good. I went for spumoni which was very excellent, and probably the best I ever had.

After dinner we went back into the park for an hour and hung out, and around 8 we started heading back to the center of the Magic Kingdom since there was an “electric parade” starting at 9. The place was packed with people and it got extremely uncomfortable, but it was totally worth it. They shut off most of the park’s lights and then a parade starts with all the characters and floats decked put in lights, making them easy to see and very colorful. They were based on Disney movies, so they had floats for Peter Pan, Snow White, Cinderella, Pete’s Dragon, and more. After the parade we grabbed some ice cream and then headed back, because at 10 there was a huge fireworks display. The fireworks were huge and beautiful, and it was a great way to end the night.

After the fireworks we headed back to the hotel. It didn’t take long to catch a bus, but it was still cramped, and once again the bus driver made our stop the last one. After we got to the room Shell passed out and I took a quick dip in the pool to soak my feet and get some of the dirt and grime of the day off. Tomorrow, our biggest concern is doing some laundry, and that’s about it that we have planned til dinner. We need a nice, slow day to recover from almost 14 hours of Magic Kingdom madness.

Sorry this one is a little late. We stayed out last night and didn’t get back til 12am.

Yesterday was a somewhat lazy day. We slept in a bit and grabbed breakfast at the resort. After that we jumped in the pool for awhile, then headed back to shower.

After eating lunch at the resort we rented some bikes and went for a ride around the resort. I hadn’t ridden a bike in probably 15 years, and it was a while for Shell too. We both started off pretty wobbily, but by the time we returned them we were pros. We were both glad that neither of us crashed, though there were some close calls.

We went back to the hotel room to escape the sun for a bit and filled out post cards (so some of you can be expecting them later this week.) At around 3 we headed over to the Boardwalk, which is an outdoor boardwalk area around one of the lakes with a couple of shops, restaurants, and clubs.
We ate dinner at Kouzzina, which is Cat Cora’s restaurant. Its a Greek/ Mediterrain restaurant that served a few of her own personal recipes. Shell got a seafood stew that contained bass, scallops, clams, shrimp, and some other stuff. It was a tad spicy but she loved it. I had a pretty tastetacular slow-cooked lamb shank with these giant lima beans which was out of this world. Dessert was also awesome. Shell got a phiylo pastery filled with semolina custard and topped with a vanilla-praline ice cream and I got this chocolate molten cake. Both desserts were awesome, and by the end we practically needed to be rolled out of the restaurant.

After that we headed over to a place called Jellyrolls, which is a dueling pianos bar. The guys there were pretty funny and played some good music, though the crows was definitely requesting more country music than anything. We stayed there for over three hours then eventually left to make our way home. Unfortunately, by 11pm the Disney buses become somewhat unreliable so it took us a little over an hour to make it back to our resort, but it was still a real fun night. We are both looking forward to today, which is our adventure to the Magic Kingdom!

Our Honeymoon: Day Three

Today started out as a easy day, but we did end up going out to the parks. We started with a semi-late morning (going out for breakfast by 8). After that we spent about an hour relaxing in the pool. After getting showered and hanging out, we ate lunch(I had a huge cold cut sandwich that looked like a Dagwood and Shell had an impressive meatball sub) and then headed down to the docks.
There were some boat rentals available to take out on the resorts three interconnected lakes. We were going to take a small speedboat, but we both couldn’t fit in it. Instead we took out a giant 10-man party boat…with just the two of us. We took turns driving the boat and had a lot of fun. Neither of us ever imagined that we would be piloting a boat ourselves! We also stopped at the shops and picked up postcards, so be expecting them soon.

After the boat ride we came back to the room and then headed over to Epcot. We got most of the park done today actually (at least the stuff that interested us.) There was a huge aquarium there too which had some bigger animals like manatees, dolphins, sea turtles and sharks. While we were there we experienced a huge thunderstorm, but we got inside quick enough, and by the time we were finshed in the building the storm had passed. We also spent time walking through the little country sections in Epcot. I succeeded in stopping Shell from buying too much Italian stuff, but she did buy a Mickey Mouse Italian car antenna topper.

For dinner we went to Les Chefs de France, which is obviously a French restaurant. It was definitely French, from the French servers to the snooty hostess. The food was ridiculously tasty though. We shared a bowl of lobster bisque which we dipped our baguette in. For dinner Shell had beef shortribs and pasta, which was very tender and tasty. I went for the duck which came with potato gratin and greenbeans. For dessert Shell had a delicious creme brulle and had an apple caramel crepe.

After dinner we headed out of the park and went back to the hotel. We jumped in the pool for a bit before retiring for the night. Tomorrow we are going to Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM Studios) and I’m looking forward to finally experiencing the Tower of Terror.

I wrote a long post but lost it on this damn phone, so here’s a short story of our day.

We went to Animal Kingdom for our first time today. It was a really fun park with animals and shows. There were also some fun thrill rides like the Mount Everest roller coaster and a dinosaur encounter.

For food we had some surprisingly good BBQ for lunch. For dinner, we went to an African-Indian place where Shell had chicken and shrimp in red and green curry and I had some tandorri lamb chops.

After dinner we were headed to the pool when a huge thunderstorm broke out, so we are trapped in our hotel room. Tomorrow will be a bummy day around the resort.

First off, I know I swore I wouldn’t do this. However, we will be doing so much that I don’t want to forget everything. Thus each day, I will be writing a quick blog to share what we did. I won’t be sharing this via Facebook or Twitter, so its only for those who really care (mainly family and friends).

Our first day was a late one. Due to thunderstorms, our plane was delayed. By the time we got to Orlando, hopped a bus to the Caribbean Beach Resort, and checked into our room, it was almost 8. We ventured out to the food court for dinner which was awesome. I got a mojo pork roast with mashed potato and plantains and Shell got a roasted chicken with mac & cheese and plantains. Our dinner consisted of the dinner, any drink, and any dessert we each wanted, so we got an order of fruit and one of cheesecake. However, by the time I finished writing this, Shell had finished the entire carrot cake by herself. But that didn’t stop her from stealing a grape and cantalope too.

By the time we got back from dinner our bags had arrived from the airport. We changed into our bathing suits and hit the pool which was deserted and warm. As we started enjoying a fireworks display from Epcot, it started to thunder and lightning so we left.

The resort is beautiful with a Caribbean-jungle/beach atmosphere. Our room is located in the “Jamacia” area and the staff are ridiculously funny. When we first got to our room we had a voicemail from Mickey and Minnie congratulating us on our marriage and wishing us to live “happily ever after.”

Our Wedding

Shell and I got back from the hotel today. Right now Shell is getting her hair cut by her sister, so I had some time to pop on here and share the news.

So in case you’ve been living under a rock (and avoiding my blog and Facebook), Shell and I got married yesterday! It was a wonderful wedding, and all our planning worked out perfectly, as the day went off without a hitch. It was a wonderful mass, and I don’t think I ever cried so much on a single day (yes, I am a baby when it comes to sentimental stuff like this.)

The reception was beautiful. The people over at Birch Hill worked hard to provide us with a beautiful room and great food. The DJ did a great job, and the photographer, though aggressive, did what we paid him for, and I’m sure we will be enjoying tons of great photos from him.

So I’m now a married man. It feels good…it feels right. I love the fact that Shell and I are now officially together, and am ready to spend the rest of my life with her.

Thanks to all the friends and family who came to share our day with us. It was great to see the extended families from far away, as well as good friends who I rarely see. Now it’s off to Disney World for a nice two-week honeymoon!!!

And a special thanks to Steve, who really was the “best man” by breaking into my apartment while I was at the hotel one morning and placing a nice 40″ HDTV in my living room for Shell and me! I almost dropped her as I carried her into the apartment and saw the box there, beckoning to me!!!

I’m Getting Married Tomorrow!!!

Well, this is it. My last post before my wedding. After tomorrow, Shell and I will be a happily married couple. I’m looking forward to taking this huge step in my life, and sharing our love with all our friends and family who are traveling up here to experience it with us.

I’m still not feeling too nervous yet. I’m sure it will start kicking in today during the rehearsal, and especially tomorrow at the actual mass. But once that is over, I think I’ll be feeling pretty darned good, and I look forward to having a good time at the reception!

That being said, this will be my last post for a long time. I won’t be back from the honeymoon until almost the middle of June, but when I get a chance I’ll pop some pics up from the wedding and honeymoon.

Thanks to everyone for the support and well-wishes they have been giving me. See you all again in a couple of weeks!!!

Today was the last day of work, and it felt good. That job, while a cakewalk, was just so demoralizing, boring, and pointless. It feels good to be out, and to be able to breathe fresh air again! It was really easy, steady money, but in the end it was pretty ridiculous and stupid.

So yeah, the wedding is now fast approaching. Shell’s mom and sister come in tomorrow night, and I will make everyone my fresh chicken cacciatore dinner. Friday we are doing last minute stuff and going out to dinner with her family. Then Saturday is here, meaning rehearsal madness, and then the wedding is Sunday. The day after the wedding we will be doing last minute junk and packing, and then Tuesday we are off to sunny Disney for our honeymoon!!!

One Week and Counting til the Big Day

I can’t believe that at this time next Saturday I will be in the midst of the rehearsal dinner, getting ready for my wedding on the following day. The time really did fly by, and all of a sudden it’s here. I’m not really nervous now, but I know I will be on the actual day. So this weekend is really our last time to breathe before it all starts.

I work until next Wednesday. On Thursday Shell’s family is coming in, and Friday will be hectic with doing all manner of last-minute things. Saturday we have one final meeting with the woman at the reception place, and then we run out for the rehearsal at the church, followed by the dinner. Afterwards I hope to get some time to hang out with people, and then before I know it I will be headed to bed (though I doubt I’ll get much sleep!)

I am really looking forward to the honeymoon. The longest vacation that we have ever taken together has been a three day one to Niagara Falls when we first started dating. Everything else since then has either been a quick one-night escape or a longer vacation with other family members. It will be nice to just relax for almost two weeks and not worry about anything, after worrying about everything for the past couple of months.

All in all, I look forward to taking the next step in my life. I consider myself extremely lucky to have found someone who really genuinely “gets me”, understands me, and shares my life with me on the level of soulmate. My only regret is the loss of game time I’ve had and will continue to have, but it’s a trade-off that I am more than willing to take.
