Preparing for the Fall “Video Game Overload”

Yes, that time of the year is on hand again…the prime time for new video game releases. Usually there are one or two games I consider “must-haves” each year, but this particular year is unusually chock full of great new releases. In fact, all the games that I will be wanting to snag early on are sequels to some of my most beloved franchises, which make things extra hard. What makes things super extra hard is that all these new games are coming out, and I have no income to pick them up! The titles I’ve got my eye on this year are:

  • Resistance 3
  • House of the Dead: Overkill- Extended Cut
  • Uncharted 3
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • WWE ’12

As you can see, every one of those games are sequels to some hard-hitting franchises, so I already know what to expect from each via playing their predecessors. So what’s a poor gamer to do with all these great games just begging to be purchased and played? Why, trade in your old games of course! Read More »

XBL Gold vs. PS+

I received an e-mail from Microsoft this morning notifying me that my XBL Gold account would be expiring next month, which makes sense since I got a 360 last August. However, now I had to pose myself a question…do I want to spend the $50 to renew my Gold account? Not only do I rarely play 360 games online, but at the same time I’m paying for a PS+ account. Thing is, my PS+ account will be coming due soon too. Seeing how I’m currently unemployed and times are hard, I don’t want to be spending money I don’t have on things I really don’t need right now. So I got to thinking about the perks of both, and whether they were worth the price of admission or not.

What I get with a XBL Gold Account:

  • The ability to play online. This is arguably the best perk to having a Gold account, simply because you cannot play online without it.
  • Superior online experience. The 360 does offer a better online experience than the PS3, from the awesome and comfortable headset that plugs in right to your controller to the ability to have cross-game chat. I do believe there are more 360 players than PS3 players as well, so it’s easier to find a game to play online with the 360
  • Exclusive content. Gold members do get access to exclusive betas and demos before the general public.

What I get with a PS+ Account:

  • Free games. On average, PS+ users get one free game PSN game a week. It’s not just lame shovelware games either; I’ve gotten some pretty great games like Magic the Gathering, Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage II and others.
  • Discounted games. This is the biggest advantage to PS+, as I can buy games over PSN for less money than it costs on XBLA. Often times, many games are discounted from 33-50% off, particularly in the first week of release. I’ve gotten a ton of games on the cheap from PS+, and it has paid for itself many times over.
  • Exclusive content. I received early access to betas for DC Universe, Uncharted 2, and Uncharted 3, as well as early access to demos and other PS-exclusive content. Read More »

November 2011 is Gonna Break My Wallet

So I was kinda watching the VGAs last night, and what I didn’t watch I followed on joystiq’s live blog, and the game announcements for next year were epic. It’s not like there were one or two game announcements to get me excited…there were FOUR! Four games which come from some of my most adored franchises, and they all come out in November. This Fall season didn’t offer too many must-haves for me, aside from Fallout: New Vegas, but next year is a different story indeed.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be released on 11/1/11. I love the Uncharted series, and Uncharted 2 took the franchise to new heights by adding in some awesome co-op and multiplayer modes, which really added to the life and replay value of the game. I’ve got my fingers crossed that there will finally be some campaign co-op, especially since there are almost always two characters on screen at any given time in the games. Read More »

No Longer Buying Single Player Games

I think I have some kind of crazy, compulsive problem where I have this “need” to have a media collection…I used to buy tons of games, DVDs, CDs, and books just to say “look at my collection.” Tons of CDs were never listen to, even more books were never read, and some DVDs still sit on my case in their original wrapping, having never been watched. Over the past year or two…actually since moving into my current apartment, I have severely cut down on my spending, but there is still one bad habit I maintain…buying single player games.

I really came to this realization this morning. Over the weekend I had beaten Trine, Scott Pilgrim, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, so this morning I needed something to play while waiting for Shell to get ready. I was lying on the floor, looking at my game collection, and I realized that I had a lot of single player games that I will probably never play again. Games like BioShock, God of War, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, and Dragon Age: Origins were all great, wonderful, classic games, but I would probably never play them again; especially since I always have something new to play through Gamefly. So I sat there, and I said “you know Rob, you paid $60 for these games when they came out, you spent less than a month playing through them, and once you beat it, you move on to the next game.” I realized how stupid it was for me to buy these games that I would never play again. I have Gamefly…I can rent any game whenever I want, and usually get it the week it releases if I plan my queue right. It’s so silly for me to be buying these single player games! Read More »

PS3 Review: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I got Uncharted 2 in from Gamefly early last week, but I had a busy schedule and had little time to play it. Luckily with the weekend spent at home, I was able to get in a few hours in the mornings, and got a good feel for the game. All I can say is, like the first Uncharted, it is a must-have!

The game continues the adventures of Nathan Drake, pro treasure hunter. The story takes you from Africa to Nepal and other locales as you search for clues to lead you to the lost treasure fleet of Marco Polo and eventually to the fabled city of Shang-ra-la. Along the way you meet up with some old friends from the previous game (Sully and Elena) as well as some new buddies. The game is totally beautiful, and boasts the best graphics you have seen yet on the PS3. The game uses cutscenes not just to help tell the awesome and in-depth story, but also serves as loading time in between levels. Thus, once you start up the game, you will never have to suffer though a load screen, which I was very pleased with. The voice acting is also top-notch, and does a lot for moving the story along.uncharted2cinematic Read More »

Tuesday Night = Uncharted 2 Co-op Night

The past couple of weeks, after Lost (which is 10pm), I have been meeting up with a couple of guys from co-optimus, and we have been playing Uncharted 2 online. For the last two-three weeks there have only three or six of us, so we broke into teams of three to play either the survival mode or the gold rush mode.

Last night started out with just three of us, and we played through one mode of survival. After that, four others joined us, and we started playing a variety of different team elimination matches. Unfortunately, all the true co-op modes only support up to three players, so with seven we had to abandon co-op for the greater good of everyone playing together.

uncharted-2-survival

All in all, Tuesdays prove to be a fun night where I get to play with some fun people. I have been having a blast playing Uncharted 2 online (which I haven’t been doing so much before I started playing with the crew), and it is a great game to play online with friends. The co-op modes are definitely best played with people who you know and can talk to, because communication is key.Whether you need to be saved from a “ninja attack” or you need to be warned of incoming chain gun-wielding enemies, communicating with the others is the only way to successfully survive the co-op modes.

PS3 Review: Aliens vs. Predator

avp2

As you may know, I had some real issues with the AVP demo that came out two weeks ago. While the demo proved the game had a good premise and some great ideas, complex controls and the fact that it was impossible to get a game going left me a bit concerned for the final product. Well, I received the disc from Gamefly on Thursday, and have since then given most of the different game modes a whirl. Unfortunately, the demo gave a very accurate pretense on how the finished game would be…a game with great ideas, but executed badly.

First off, the story/background to the game is virtually non-existent. The game takes place shortly after the events of Alien 3, but I would not have known that had I not read it somewhere online. There is no background story at all, and the cut scenes, while looking and sounding good, do little to explain what the heck is going on. Im going to take a stab at it and say that humans find some ancient Alien/Predator temple and start creating mutant Aliens. The Marines and Predators come in to put a stop to it, resulting in a three-way battle royale to be the last species standing.  There are three single player campaigns (Marine, Alien, Predator), and each three tell the same story through the respective species point of view. For example, as an Alien you are defending the hive from the invading factions, and as a Marine you are called in to clean up the mess. That being said, I’ll start this review up with the single player campaigns.

Thursday= Resistance 2 Co-Op Night

resistance2box

Just finished a four-hour co-op session of Resistance 2 with a few of the folks over at co-optimus. We started at around 10pm, and I was the first to bounce at 2am, but the rest were still going strong. There were five of us total, plus the occasional guest who joined in for a round or two. I got my Solider raised up to level 14, but the Spec Op is still stuck at level 10. Man, I really dont play the Spec Op very well.

I really do enjoy playing Resistance 2 online, for the co-op. Im not as big a fan of the competitive. I hope that Resistance 3 (whenever it comes out) borrows from this, and establishes a good online co-op mode. So I just figured I would write a quick little post up to calm down before hitting bed.

Tonight was a success, and I hope we have more organized game nights in the future. I believe that Tuesday night next  week is going to be dedicated to co-op and competitive Uncharted 2, which should be fun since I havent delved too much into it. If you read this and have a PS3, just add me. You know the PSN name: BigBadBob113!!!

Completed Uncharted 2

I beat the game on normal difficulty this morning. The game in general was a blast. Not only is the gameplay great, but the story that goes along with it is awesome. The thing I love about the Uncharted series is how well both the gameplay and storytelling mesh together to create one wonder work of art.

I was going to write a review of the game, but theres no point. All I have to say about it is just buy it, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Its one of the best gaming experinces I have had in a long time, and I cant wait to play through it again to get the next trophy.

I got home from my college class at around 7:45. After wolfing down dinner and finishing up some school work, it was a little after 9:00pm, and I was ready to pop Borderlands in and try it out. I wont be around Friday or Saturday, and I have a bunch of school work to do Sunday, so I wanted to use the opportunity to get to see what Borderlands was all about.

Its pretty great.

Gamefly Ships me Uncharted 2 Super Fast FTW

I was shocked when I opened my mailbox today and found Uncharted 2 waiting for me. Gamefly usually takes between 3-5 days to ship a game to me from their nearest shipping center in Pittsburgh. Thats why I was so amazed to receive the game today. They e-mailed me telling me it shipped Monday, which didnt actually happen since the post offices were closed for Columbus Day. That means the post office got hold of the game yesterday and then got it here by today. Im not complaining…Im just amazed.

Thanks Gamefly! Keep this up. Its my only criticism of you…

Definitely Buying Uncharted 2 from Gamefly

So I sat down and did some math, and have determined that I will get an awesome deal for Uncharted 2 for Gamefly. Here’s how it breaks down:

MSRP- $59.99

Gamefly’s Keep it Now price- $47.99

5% Discount (being there 6 months)- 2.39

$5 Gamefly credit (issued every 3 months)- 5.00

Remainder of my Verizon phone rebate card- 26.39

Price I pay out of my own pocket: $14.21

So yeah, I will be paying out under $15 for a $60 game. Thats a savings of like $45, which is ridiculous. This is why I love Gamefly…the day a game is released, if you rent it, the price to keep the game is always $47.99, which is like almost $15 off. Its such a racket, but its great. So I’ll definitely be keeping Uncharted 2 that very day. Cant wait!

PS3 Demo Review: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

uncharted_2_final_box_art

Uncharted 2 comes out next week, but last week they released the online multi-player demo. I loved the first Uncharted, and enjoyed playing the Uncharted 2 beta a few months back, and Im really looking forward to Uncharted 2. In fact, my Gamefly queue is currently empty so that Uncharted 2 will ship on release day. But enough about the full game…this is about the demo for the online modes. The demo showcases seven different online modes. From what I could tell, two of them were co-op, and the other five were competitive. Steve and I met up and decided to rock through the co-op ones and see how they were.

I was pleased to find that the controls remained the same, as did the basic style of gameplay. Uncharted is not a FPS where you run around with a machine gun and blow everyone away…you really have to do a lot of duck and cover firing, meaning you will constantly be hiding behind objects, then firing off a couple of rounds, then hiding again. The health system is how a lot of FPS are going these days…as you get hit, the screen begins to turn red, and as you are near death it will turn gray. You can regen health by hiding somewhere and avoiding damage for a set period of time. The game looks and sounds amazing, with great graphics and voice overs. I cant wait to get into the single player campaign. Its gonna rock! But on to the demo!

The Waiting is the Hardest Part…

So I pretty much waited a whole week for Gamefly to ship me a game, but to no avail. I was unable to snag either Beatles Rockband or Batman: Arkham Asylum. Also, my goal was to snag Uncharted 2 when it comes out on October 13. So I wanted to have a game shipped out by today so I could check it out for a bit and send it back in time to have an open spot on Uncharted 2.

I looked over a few games, and eventually settled on The History Channel: Secret Missions of the Civil War. I have heard it was pretty bad, but I have been on a Civil War kick lately, so I figured its a game I could check out quickly and then send back without missing much.

PS3 Review- Uncharted 2 Beta

So as I already mentioned previously, I was able to get into the Uncharted 2 online beta thanks to the good folks at Co-optimus. So I popped it on today, and played the co-op mode. The co-op mode consists of a short stage, where you and two others play through the level.

I liked it. It had similar controls to the first Uncharted, and the same fighting style, where you run, find cover, and shoot up some baddies. Only this time, you are joined by two friends, who take on two other characters. Its a lot of fun. There are some areas where you need a buddy to help you through. For example, at one part, a player had to stand at the bottom of a street lamp and offer a boost up to the other players. Also, a big part of it is reviving your buddies. When a player goes down, the other players have a chance to run over and revive the player. So if all three players go down, its game over.

I really enjoyed it. I think it worked well as co-op. Its a shame the actual game wont feature this, and the online co-op will only consist of mini-missions, and not the entire campaign. Still, it was a lot of fun, and I look forward to the finished product. Im sure I’ll play through it a few more times, and even try the competitive mode eventually.

Good stuff. It lives up to the first Uncharted, which I think is one of Sony’s best exclusives (next to God of War and Resistance, of course). But Uncharted is something that PS3 players need…something that they can have, and gloat over the other players who dont have a PS3. The Uncharted series is definitely one of the top Ps3 exclusives.

I just received a code to get into the Uncharted 2 beta, thanks to the grand folks over at Co-optimus. Wish I didnt have my test tonight so I could check it out now, but theres  cramming to be had. Luckily Im off all day tomorrow, so I’ll be gaming it up the whole day. I’ll have to divide the time between Uncharted 2 and Ghostbusters. Should be a fun-filled day none the less. I’ll pop up my impressions of Uncharted 2, as well as a review of Ghostbusters, some time tomorrow.

Sony’s E3 PS3 Conference

I’ll be keeping this blog active and write as I watch Sony’s E3 conference. Im very excited for it…more so than Nintendo’s. Im looking forward to seeing more God of War and hoping for some voice chat news. Sony is really behind compared to Microsoft.

-Talking about the PS2. Interesting that they are still planning to keep it going, and keep making games for it. With the price tag of $100, everyone should have a PS2.

-Uncharted 2. Lots of gameplay. Looks awesome. The first one was great, and I would love to buy it, but its still a ridiculous $40 used at Gamestop. The game has been around for a long time, it really should be cheaper by now. But I think it is one of the PS3′s best franchises, next to Resistance.  Its gonna be a must-have.

-Showing off some MAG. Thats the 256-player FPS. Sounds ridiculous. Looks good. Also looks a little more complex and strategic compared to most FPS. I like how you can be a soldier, or pilot the tank or helicopter. Very cool.

-Some PSP info. I dont really care because personally, I believe the DS > PSP.

-MGS Peace Walker for the PSP. Not only do I not care because its on PSP, but MGS 3 and MGS4 were not my cups of tea. I’ll pass.

-PSN. FFVII coming as downloadable! Im soooo buying that!

-Home. What a waste of my time. Home is insanely ridiculous and retarded.

-New Rockstar exclusive game. Titled Agent. Im not sure how I feel. I dont like GTA games because I hate the controls. I’ll have to see how this one is.

-Assassins Creed 2 looks interesting. I dont know how I feel about da Vinci creating inventions to help the main character assassinate people…

-OK, seriously?! You have a trailer for FFXIII which comes out early 2010, and then follow up RIGHT BEHIND that with FFXIV?! Ridiculous.

-The PS3 wireless controller. Looks like a black Wiimote, but has a sphere that is read by the PS Eye. Seems pretty awesome.

Click here to see Joystiq’s full synopsis of all the gaming goodness that occurred!

Now I have to leave for school, so I’ll miss the rest. Was decent, but I think Nintendo had a better, more exciting showcase.

I was disappointed the God of War III has been set back until March 2010. I was really looking forward to it. Im hoping they decide to go with including Blu-ray versions of GoW I and II with it also, seeing how one cannot play Ps2 games on some PS3′s (particularly mine).
