Fifteenth Platinum Trophy: WWE ’12

One of the lamest-looking WWE Platinums, and one of the most annoying to get

Gotta catch ‘em all: I have the Platinum trophies for Smackdown vs. Raw 2010, Smackdown vs. Raw 2011, WWE Legends of WrestleMania and WWE Allstars. Thus I was destined to continue the tradition and work towards the Platinum trophy in WWE ’12. It was a mediocre one…there were a lot of easy trophies, but two in particular were a real pain to snag.

“You’ve Got Fans” was a particularly difficult one to obtain, and it should not have been. The trophy requires you to upload something to the servers and then have five players download it. Well the big problem is that the servers were constantly down. If you’ve played WWE games in the past then you’re used to servers being down or laggy when trying to get an online match going. But the servers are so messed up in WWE ’12 that it took me a couple of days just to get on long enough to completely upload a CAW (create-a-wrestler.) So with me having a hard enough time just uploading, it took even longer for five people to find my CAW and then download it. The servers have been cruddy since the game launched in Novemeber, and to this day they have not been fixed. It’s a shame not only for people who want to get this trophy, but for others who just want to download a crappy Hulk Hogan CAW that has an overall stat value of 100. Read More »

Fourteenth Platinum: X-Men: Destiny

I would say that not only was X-Men: Destiny the easiest Platinum I ever received, it is also one of the “unplanned” ones. I rented the game because I knew it had a short campaign, and I wanted to get something nice and light from Gamefly. This would allow me to devote only a limited time to it and then I could get back to playing my own games while waiting for Gamefly to ship the next game on my queue.

I finished my first playthrough in under six hours, and I found it to be a pretty entertaining super hero button masher. I decided to keep it around for a second playthrough on the hardest difficulty just to get the gold trophy, check out the other faction (my first playthrough was with the Brotherhood) and to rock through the new game +. So eleven-twelve hours later I finished my second playthrough and looked at the trophy list. Much to my amazement I had 92% of the trophies, and was only missing some of the “kill X amount of Y enemies.” I jumped in to the level selects and played some of the later levels through just to kill the required number of enemies, and then bam! I was in Platinum paradise.

Thirteenth Platinum Trophy: Fallout: New Vegas

I received the Platinum trophy in Fallout: New Vegas today, and just in time with Skyrim arriving tomorrow. It took over a year, since I had pre-ordered New Vegas brand-spanking new last October. It ended up taking four playthroughs but it was all worth it. Plus Bethesda made the game is so fun that it never really felt like a chore. I had received the Platinum in Fallout 3 so I figured I would work towards doing the same in New Vegas.

There were some pain in the ass trophies to get in order to receive the Platinum, the two biggest regarding gambling. I had to win thirty games of Caravan (a card game played in the Fallout story) for the Know When to Fold Them trophy. It’s a really annoying game because the rules are a bit confusing at first, but once I finally understood the basics I was doing pretty good. If you’re in the midst of doing it, don’t worry about tracking down extra cards to make a custom set…I received the trophy using just the default deck. The other trophy that was annoying was The Courier Who Broke the Bank, which requires you to win so much money at the three main New Vegas casinos that you are banned from gambling there. I initially started trying roulette, but was getting nowhere. Then I tried my hand at Blackjack and was winning crazy money. My biggest word of advice is to make sure you have a lot of luck…I had my luck maxed out at 10 for my casino playthrough and it made things a heck of a lot easier. Read More »

Fallout: New Vegas Will Be My Next Platinum

Yup, it’s official…Fallout: New Vegas will be the next Platinum trophy I snag. I’ve gotten through all of the annoying trophies such as the casino and caravan ones and I have received all the trophies for using all the different weapons. I’ve also completed the game on three different occasions, so I have unlocked the trophies associated with siding with Mr. House, with Caesar, and for going rogue as a wildcard. Today I broke the casinos so the only thing left standing between me and that beautiful chunk of Platinum is completing the NCR story missions. The tricky stuff is over, all I have to do is play on until the end. It’s going to be a sweet Platinum indeed.

Twelfth Platinum Trophy: inFAMOUS 2

I’ve been on a gaming spree the past two days. With Batman: Arkham City coming in either today or tomorrow from Gamefly, I wanted to finish up my quest for the inFAMOUS 2 Platinum before it got here. So I put a good chunk of time into the game yesterday morning, afternoon, night, and then finished it up this morning. It was a lot of fun, and was one of my easier Platinums.

I took my time with my first playthrough, as a good guy, on easy. I did all the side quests, found every one of the 320ish blast shards scattered around the city, unlocked all the powers, played a bunch of the user-created missions, collected all the dead drops…I did it all. Since I played it on easy it was quite the cake walk, and I had a real blast running around and exploring the city stress-free. Oh, and back to blast shards…they are nowhere near as annoying in the first game. One of the last powers you can unlock is called “blast shard sense” and when you search for blast shards now the nearest one shows up on the map, regardless of how far away it is. So once I unlocked that I spent about two hours running back and forth through the city picking up the last few shards I had missed, but at least it was a sure-fire way to find them all painlessly. This is something I wish they had for the first inFAMOUS game… Read More »

inFAMOUS 2 Will Be My Next Platinum

First off, let me get this off my chest… inFAMOUS should have been Platinum #12. I picked it up for free from Sony’s “Welcome Back Program” and have 98% of the trophies. The only thing holding me back from the sweet, sweet Platinum is a stupid collectible trophy. Through the course of the game you can pick up items called blast shards that increase your power, and there is a trophy for finding them all. Problem is that they don’t appear on a map until your almost on top of them, and this kind of tracking system is near impossible in a sandbox game like inFAMOUS. So yeah, when I look at my trophy count for inFAMOUS that 98% just slaps me in the face.

Now inFAMOUS 2, that’s another story. When I traded in my fat console for a slim one, I ended up snagging the inFAMOUS 2 bundle. Luckily Sucker Punch learned from the first game and finding all the blast shards is no longer an issue. One of the last powers you can unlock in the game allows you to see the nearest blast shard, no matter how far away it is. After unlocking this I spent about two hours running across the city picking up every last one of those suckers, and that trophy is now out of the way.  Read More »

My New PS3 Is Here

My new PS3 came in from Amazon today, and I’m already in the process of getting it back to normal. There are a couple of things I want to note:

  • With the credit from my fat PS3 trade-in, as well as previous game trades I had saved up, I was able to pick up the 320GB inFamous 2 bundle (sure blows my old 80GB away)
  • While I love inFamous and couldn’t wait to play the sequel, I didn’t want to own it. I was planning on returning the game to a local retailer for credit I could have used towards Skyrim or something, but the game has a big ol’ “NOT FOR RESALE” sticker on it, so that ain’t gonna work
  • The new slim system may be a tad uglier (I like the fat PS3′s shininess) but it is sooo damn small and light. Amazing!
  • The controller feels a little lighter, but I don’t know if it’s because they improved it or if it’s missing three years worth of gamer sweat
  • I love that the USB cable that is now bundled with the system is 3x longer than the old one. That thing was way too short Read More »

Gearing Up for Resistance 3 by Going Trophy Hunting in Resistance 2

I’m a huge fan of the Resistance series on the PS3, and played the heck out of both games…especially the co-op missions in Resistance 2. With Resistance 3 less than a month away (comes out September 6th) I decided to trade a few games in to Amazon so I could use the credit to pre-order the brand-spanking new game and have it in my hands on release day. But it is a month away, so what am I to do in the mean time?

I decided to revisit Resistance 2 for two reasons. First, I wanted to re-immerse myself in the game’s campaign mode, and have begun working my way through that. Secondly, I’m on a trophy quest to snag a bunch of missing trophies! I picked up most of the ones I was missing between yesterday and today, so now I only have a couple left. Unfortunately, most of those missing ones are for the competitive modes, and I’m just not a fan of those! The last few trophies separating me from Platinum Paradise are: Read More »

PS3 Review: Dungeon Siege III

I love a great hack-and-slash/ dungeon crawler RPG grindfest, but the current generation has been lacking in this department…until this year, when a large amount of these games are coming out. Dungeon Siege III is the first full retail game (Dungeon Hunter: Alliance was a downloadable title), and while the developers made some bad decisions as far as co-op goes, the general game is pretty sweet.

The Characters:

One of the main things that make a hack-and-slash RPG is the characters and/or classes. Dungeon Siege III focuses around a group called “The Legion”, and the four playable characters are all descendants of this order that was pretty much decimated thirty years prior. The four characters are all different and do, generally speaking, have varying play styles. The “rogue” is a female human who uses guns as weapons, and also has access to some curses for good measure. There is a human knight who deals heavy melee combat, making him a fine tank. There is a female archon (aka “fire demon”) who has two different forms; as a human she can deal melee damage with her staff/spear, but when in her fire demon form she gains access to some crazy fire magic. This makes her an ideal character as she can switch between melee and magic combat fairly quickly. The last character is a dwarven…something. I’m not entirely sure what he does since I haven’t played as him yet, but he claims that using mathematical calculations and his mind he can rip an enemy in two once he’s trained to do so, so that’s something to look forward to I suppose.

Closing in on the inFAMOUS Platinum

I am only a few trophies away from “Platinum Paradise” in inFAMOUS. I had a little time to kill today so I dedicated it to finishing up the stunt list, which was a pain in the arse. I had some trouble with the “Have a Nice Fall” and “Right Back at Ya” stunts, but with a lot of patience I finished them all up and got the “Stunt Master” trophy.

The only trophies I have left are:

  • Good Finish
  • Hard Finish
  • True Hero (just one upgrade away now)
  • Good Sphere
  • Rockhound

The top four trophies are all story-related, and I’ll be snagging them shortly, once I finish up my current campaign (I’m currently playing a good guy on hard difficulty.) Once I finish up the campaign, I’ll head back into the city and finish cleaning up the shard collections, which I’m sure will be a time-consuming process. I can’t that having to collect 350 shards is only worth a bronze trophy! You can count on me cheating a bit with an online guide for all those shards for sure! Once that’s done, I’ll be sitting pretty with my 12th platinum.

PS3 Review: Alice: Madness Returns

Alice: Madness Returns is a sequel to American McGee’s Alice, which was released on the PC in 2000. I had never played it before (since I don’t play PC games) but I am a sucker for anything Wonderland, and had heard nothing but good things about the American McGee game. So when a new game was released on the PS3, I jumped at the chance to check out this twisted version of Wonderland, and came away from it with some mixed thoughts.

For starters, forget the blonde Alice persona you think you know…this Alice is a black-haired emo/goth chick and can definitely hold her own, whether it be the streets of London or an altered horrific Wonderland. The game is divided into chapters, and each chapter starts out in London where Alice is trying to discover the truth about her past. Eventually she stumbles into Wonderland, and that’s where the meat of the game takes place. Each chapter is set in a different area of Wonderland, ranging from the Mad Hatter’s steel works to the Queen of Hearts castle to a demented doll house area. Basically Alice navigates these areas in an attempt to discover how to stop a rampaging train that is in the process of destroying Wonderland.

Back into inFAMOUS Thanks to Sony’s Welcome Back Program

When the PSN got revived a couple of weeks ago, Sony decided to put forth some positive PR by offering PS3 owners two free games. The two games could be chosen from a list of five, which included two PS3 titles (that were downloadable) and three PSN games. The choices were:

  • inFAMOUS
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Dead Nation
  • Super Stardust HD
  • Wipeout HD

Seeing how I already owned LBP and Dead Nation, and I’m not a huge fan of racing games, I went with inFAMOUS and Super Stardust HD. Even though I had played through inFAMOUS a couple of years ago when it first came out, I realized that with one more playthrough I could get the Platinum trophy, so that’s what I’m currently working on.

Eleventh Platinum Trophy: WWE All Stars

I was about eight online matches away from receiving the final two trophies in WWE All Stars (Main Eventer and All Trophies Awarded, which is the Platinum) when disaster struck and the PSN went down. The past twenty-some odd days have been a haze as I struggled to survive playing online offline games, knowing that the Platinum trophy was so close yet so far. So this morning, once I downloaded the new firmware and changed my password, the first thing I did was jump on All Stars and start grinding towards my 50th win.

Initially I was going to be boosting because two friends who I’ve boosted with previously were online. However, neither one wanted to, so I sucked it up and spent the next two hours getting my wins the old fashioned way…beating the shit out of noobs online. I ended up going for 11-3 today, with three of those wins not registering due to rage quitters. After my 50th online win (I beat the floor with Ultimate Warrior’s ass as Kane) I was pleased to hear the awesome ding of the last two trophies unlocking. I enjoyed playing All Stars online, and I will still be going back on to kick butt. I’ll probably start playing more ranked matches just to get my official stats up.

As for the next Platinum, I have no idea. I don’t have any games currently that seem to be Platniumable, so it will probably be some time before I get another.

Finally, The PSN Has Come Back…Online

It’s been a tough twenty-three days, but the PSN returned (for the most part) yesterday. The online play, chat, friends list, and trophies are the important features that returned, and the only one missing is the PSN Store, which will hopefully get back into service soon (I just want to sync all my RB songs to RB3.) It’s been a long time coming and I’ve been itching to get online for two main reasons:

  • To play Dungeon Hunter Alliance online
  • To Platinum WWE All Stars

I’m currently nine online wins away from getting the Platinum in All Stars, and when I downloaded the new firmware and got the PS3 going again, I had a friend request from a guy who wanted to boost All Stars. Pretty soon this guy and I will be sitting back and basking in the glory of our new Platinum trophy! After I get All Stars out of the way, I’ll probably take a break and get some stuff down around the house, then I’ll see if I can’t get a game of Dungeon Hunter Alliance underway.

I missed being able to play online, and I’m so glad I can now. Welcome back, PSN!

There is only one trophy standing between me and Platinum goodness…the “Main Eventer” trophy which requires you to win fifty online matches. I was really going to do this the old-fashioned way by pummelling my opposition, as I am pretty good at the game, if I do say so myself. Sadly, the online scene is full of rage quitters who will exit the game just before you win a match. Not only do you not gain the win, but you can be booted back to the main menu, to the PS3 XMB, or even get frozen and have to do a hard reset. It’s just not worth the frustration.

So the past few days I’ve been “boosting” with other players I met either here on this very blog or on one of the forums I frequent. Basically we agree to go take turns allowing each player to get a win. After a few days of this, I currently have forty-one wins, meaning I’m only nine away from that beautiful Plat. Hopefully soon!!!!

Dead Nation Will Be Next Platinum

After finishing up a co-op campaign on Grim difficulty, it’s only a matter of time before Dead Nation becomes my next Platinum. I’ve been playing the game with a friend during the day after I get home from work, and it’s only a matter of time before we receive the precious Platinum…my guestimate is about a week, seeing how I’m only two trophies behind.

On the WWE All Stars front, I’m also pretty darn close, with only one trophy to go before hitting Plats. However, the missing trophy requires me to win fifty online matches, and as of right now I’m at twenty-seven. I would have had at least thirty-two by now if not for rage quitters who will exit the game/ turn off their consoles right as I dish out my finisher. This causes the game to disconnect and not register the win. Thus, it will be quite some time before I amass the fifty wins.

I’m Back (Though I Never Really Left)

All’s been quiet on the Twitter/Facebook/Google Buzz front as I stopped linking my blog to these formats. I never stopped blogging, but I sure have been getting less traffic coming here. So I guess I’ll publicly explain the story now.

A few months ago, I received a comment to a Google Buzz, which was picked up from Twitter, which was picked up from my blog. Basically, an ex-employer saw this blog via Google Buzz and then wanted to offer me a job. He somehow found Shell’s phone number and called her in an attempt to find me. He then left me a comment after calling my wife. She was a bit weirded out by this, as was I. First off, if he noticed my blog via Google Buzz, that means he knows my e-mail account, so he could have easily shot me an e-mail to make his offer (which I wouldn’t have taken regardless, since it was a crummy, boring job.) Secondly, since I did work there I would think he would have my phone number more readily available than Shells. Thirdly, who the heck comments on a Google Buzz with a job offer?!

All in all, the whole situation was a bit creepy, and it felt like I was being stalked. After this incident I made my Facebook account private (something, for whatever reason, I didn’t do with my Twitter account) and I removed the links between my blog and Twitter and Google Buzz. So for the past few months, I’ve been blogging away and whatnot, though most people didn’t know about it. About two months ago one of my co-optimus buddies was wondering where I’ve been, and I told him the gyst of the tale. Then today, he asked after me again, and he also gave me the idea of just making my Twitter account private. When I read that, I couldn’t believe that I had done that with Facebook and not Twitter! So I went to Twitter, made it a private account, and then reactivated the WP to Twitter plugin on my blog. So I’m back in the game! Read More »

I’m getting close to unlocking two more Platinum trophies, but I’m not sure which will be hitting first.

In WWE All Stars, I’ve unlocked the vast majority of the trophies. The only ones remaining are the online ones (win 10 matches, win 25 matches, win 50 matches, and win 10 matches in a row) and two massive ones; one requiring me to defeat the entire roster with Triple H and one requiring me to not only defeat the entire roster but also clear all three Path of Champions with Ultimate Warrior. Once I snag these, I will be in Platinum paradise. Read More »

PSN Re-Releasing Sega Classics…With Trophies!

Yesterday (for some people), Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most notable accomplishments from the Genesis era, was released on PSN. “Wait a minute, isn’t Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega’s Ultimate Genesis Collection game disc” you ask? It sure is, but with the PSN re-release of the game you will get two things you don’t get in the retail disc…full on trophy support as well as online leaderboards. And Sonic isn’t the only game getting this re-release treatment.

Every two weeks, a new old-school Sega game will be released, including the awesomely classic Streets of Rage 2 and Golden Axe II. These games will also have extra trophies and online leaderboards. Personally, I’m hoping that these two games will also receive the ability to play with others online…something that can’t be done on the Ultimate Genesis Collection disc. Read More »

Ninth Platinum Trophy: Borderlands

My ninth Platinum came quicker than I initially predicted. I had thought I had a ways to go, but it turns out I was actually closer to getting the Platinum than I realized. It turns out the only main trophy I needed was to reach level 50, so I spent the past few play sessions grinding my hunter, and today he reached level 50, nabbing me the trophy, which is called Borderlands Defender.

Even though I have the Platinum, I will definitely continue to play the game. Steve and I are still in the midst of an online co-op campaign, and I still have plenty of other trophies to get from the DLC…I only have the trophies from the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned so far.

The way things are looking, I don’t think I’ll be working on a Platinum for another game until I get WWE Allstars in at the end of the month. The other games I own that I have not already Platted yet are too much work for me, including Rock Band 2, Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. They all have some trophies that require too much effort or are just out of my league (especially with Rock Band.)
