I was fiddling around on my Gamefly account today, and I was surprised to find that they had a full log of every game I ever rented from them, started from 2008 to the present. I decided to use this information to my advantage and factor in how many games I rented for the year 2010 and, based on the yearly membership price, determine if it was worth it. Below is a list of all the games I rented in 2010: Read More »

My Recent Smackdown Escapade

I went to a taping of WWE’s Smackdown show last night (Tuesday, August 31) at the Times Union Center in Albany (home of AHL hockey!!!), and enjoyed myself quite a bit. The arena about a twelve minute drive from my apartment, tickets were only $25, and the Undertaker was going to be there…all aspects which made me want to go, despite the fact that I haven’t sat down and watched wrestling since the very early 2000′s. I must say that it is a heck of a lot more fun when you’re there as opposed to watching from home.

Note: I did not bring my camera, since I assumed they would be searching and Shell was not around to hide it in her pocketbook. Turns out that cameras are encouraged, just no video cams, so I could have brought it, and if I had known, there would have been a lot more pics. Instead all I have are a few crappy ones I took with my cell phone.

Let me talk about the overall feel in the arena first. It was hot, sweaty, and stinky…I have to say that the stench was far worse than anything I had to endure at PAX East. But the slight discomforts made up for actually being there, surrounding by raving fans who probably believe that the WWE is the same as UFC and other MMAs, in that the fights are real. There were kids, teens, and full-grown adults walking around sporting various WWE shirts, signs, and even belts (professional and makeshift.) To hear the crowd react to the wrestlers in the ring was also pretty cool, from everyone shouting for a fan-fave to kick out of a pin or submission to the crowd booing at the heel when he flaunted to the stands. You could hear everyone say “oooh!” with each chest chop and dropkick that was received. The other mind-blowing reaction was when a wrestler’s theme music hit, indicating they were on their way to the ring. The people got so worked up to see their fan favorites, and it really did make the experience a fun and memorable one. Read More »

Im not saying that what follows are the 10 best games ever made, or my top 10 favorite games. Instead, I starting thinking back through my life about some fond memories I have of playing video games, from growing up to nowadays. I  brainstormed a bit about these memories and to see what would to mind, and then I organized them chronologically and as you see below. Enjoy taking this trip down memory lane with me.

Second Platinum Trophy: WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010

I really, REALLY thought that platinum #2 would come from Sacred 2. I was soooo close…just one trophy away from tasting the deliciousness of platinum. But I have thus far been foiled…my character is not strong enough to survive the final bosses, and I have unable to find another playing online who is playing on niobium difficulty. So my second platinum instead came from SvR 2010.

It was actually a pretty easy trophy to snag. It was similar to Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection in that the trophies were not a challenge, but were just time consuming. Luckily, none of the trophies required me to play the game online, which is plagued with abundant horrors such as spamming players and extreme lag.

I did enjoy playing through the game to snag these trophies. I had to play through all the story modes at least once, though it was annoying when I had to play through the Mickie James (diva) story twice because I missed one of the unlockables. It was a blast, and I will still continue to enjoy playing it for quite some time.

Now hopefully Sacred 2 will be #3 someday…

Wow…I didnt realize its been a week since I last posted something. Things have been somewhat busy, so I have not really had the time (nor the motivation) to blog up about it.

Thanksgiving went well. We went to my parents house, and about twelve of us total gathered for a nice turkey dinner. After Thanksgiving, I started up my holiday shopping. Shell and I ended up hitting the mall on Black Friday (though much later…not in the morning) and started shopping. We dont necessarily go for the deals, but just to get into the shopping mood. While I got some small gifts at the mall, I did some major purchases from the comfort of my own home on Friday. I ended up purchasing my sister and my parents gifts off of amazon, as well as some other little things. They continued to have good deals through Monday, and I ended up buying at least one thing each day. So on Monday I received three packages, on Tuesday I received another three, and tonight I received one. I should be receiving one more tomorrow and two more on Friday. I bet the UPS guy hates me right now. But thats what happens when you have Amazon Prime…you just buy things one at a time!!!

PS3 Review: WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2010

svr20101

I always start off these reviews by saying this…I am no longer a fan of the WWE (I stopped following it in about 2001 or so, back when it was still the WWF). I do not watch it during the week, I don’t follow it online. All I know about whats going on in the WWE is based on each edition of Smackdown vs. Raw that comes out, so my knowledge is generally limited. That being said, I LOVE playing the Smackdown vs. Raw games (to hearby be referred to as SvR), and I tend to purchase the newest edition each year. Normally, there are some minor changes every year, but this years edition (2010) surpasses them all, and I think it is safe to say that SvR 2010 is the best wrestling game ever made.

I guess I will start with the actual in-ring gameplay. SvR 2010 now allows each wrestler to perform 16 strong grapples, as opposed to the old school 8, which means that each wrestler now has a move set that is twice as large. You use the right analog to perform a quick grapple, which is usually a cheesy weak move that wont do much damage, but is a great way to get in a cheap shot (usually a punch, kick, elbow, or quick takedown.) Then if you hold R1 while using the right analog, you will initiate a strong grapple. These are the big, devastating moves such as power bombs, choke slams, suplexes, DDTs, and all that other good stuff. Depending on the direction you push the right analog will result in different holds. For example, R1 and left on the analog will initiate a wrist hold, and R1 and up will start an up-close true wrestler grapple. Once the grapple is initiated, pushing the right analog in any of the four basic directions will result in a different move being performed. So that’s where you get your 16 moves from…four different grapple holds, and four moves for each grapple. You can assign which moves you want for each hold from a menu screen, and there are literally hundreds of moves to choose from. Oh, and lets not forget the grounded grapple moves. When an opponent is lying on the mat, you will be able to perform up to six different moves, depending on where you are standing (head, side, or legs), and if he is lying on his back or face-first.
