On November 17, 2006, the PS3 was released here in the United States. I wanted one pretty badly back then but the price at the time was astronomical. I had went from the PS1 to the PS2, and I was intent on going for the PS3 once the price was right. And on November 8, 2008, the price was indeed right. I had $400 saved up and Wal-Mart had a promotion where if you bought the PS3 (which was $399.99 at the time) you got a $100 gift card. So I went to Wally World early that morning, waited on a line for over two hours, and eventually snagged my PS3. I’ve now had the PS3 for three years and I have to say I’ve really enjoyed it as a system. It introduced me to so many new features like online play, trophies, wireless controllers, affordable downloadable games and voice chat that I hadn’t experienced with the PS2 (no, I never played PC games).

Before the PS3, I only had a small handful of friends that I knew that played video games, and it was always a local co-op affair. With the PS3 I was able to play with people from anywhere and I made some new online friends. In my quest for finding co-op partners I happened across C0-Optimus which is a site dedicated to co-op games and meeting fellow co-op gamers. Now I never have a shortage of gaming buddies to hit up when I jump online for a co-op game.

Of course, the biggest part of the PS3 are the games. I will now regale you with tales of some of my favorite ones: Read More »

Resistance 3 is Out, Dead Island Sneaks In

Believe it or not, after thinking about my choices and talking with friends, I’ve decided to scrap my pre-order of Resistance 3, and instead go for Dead Island. That may be shocking to hear, seeing how I spent so much time talking about Resistance and I’ve barely said two peeps about Dead Island. But in the end, it came down to replay value, and Dead Island will give me more game for my money than Resistance 3 will.

Resistance 3 offers a campaign that can be played either solo or with a friend, as well as a couple of the usual competitive multiplayer modes. That’s right…the awesome eight player co-op mode from Resistance 2 has been scratched. Now everyone should know by now that I’m not a fan of the multiplayer scene (because I suck), so I won’t be touching that at all. That just leaves a campaign, and it’s probably not too time consuming at all. So all in all, I’ll probably go through two playthroughs at most and then be done with it. Then it will just sit around, collect dust, and eventually be traded in for less than half of what I paid for it.

Then there’s Dead Island. Read More »

Book Review: Resistance: A Hole in the Sky

Note: Contains spoilers about Resistance 2 and Resistance 3

William C. Dietz is at it again, writing another “prequel” to a Resistance game. I had previously reviewed his book Resistance: Gathering Storm, which was a prequel to Resistance 2. It was supposed to bridge the gap between the video games Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, but instead it was just a poor attempt at building up the character that is Nathan Hale. Dietz  never addressed the burning question of how the Chimera went from being beaten back in England (how Fall of Man ends) to having conquered not only England but the United States as well (which is how Resistance 2 opens.) A Hole in the Sky is Dietz’s attempt at a prequel to the upcoming game Resistance 3, where the main character is no longer Hale but Joseph Capelli. The problem with fully reviewing the book is that Resistance 3 does not release until September 6th, so until I play the game I cannot say if this game acts as a true prequel. However, from what I’ve read, Dietz has stepped up his game and has answered the biggest question I had…how did Capelli go from the huge muscle-man from Resistance 2 to this scrawny dude in Resistance 3.

Gearing Up for Resistance 3 by Going Trophy Hunting in Resistance 2

I’m a huge fan of the Resistance series on the PS3, and played the heck out of both games…especially the co-op missions in Resistance 2. With Resistance 3 less than a month away (comes out September 6th) I decided to trade a few games in to Amazon so I could use the credit to pre-order the brand-spanking new game and have it in my hands on release day. But it is a month away, so what am I to do in the mean time?

I decided to revisit Resistance 2 for two reasons. First, I wanted to re-immerse myself in the game’s campaign mode, and have begun working my way through that. Secondly, I’m on a trophy quest to snag a bunch of missing trophies! I picked up most of the ones I was missing between yesterday and today, so now I only have a couple left. Unfortunately, most of those missing ones are for the competitive modes, and I’m just not a fan of those! The last few trophies separating me from Platinum Paradise are: Read More »

PS3 Review: Dead Nation

When it comes to zombie related games, my two favorites used to be the Left 4 Dead series, followed by Zombies Ate My Neighbors. However, I do believe there is a new contender in Dead Nation, the PS3-exclusive top-down, twin-stick zombie shooter. I had initially shied away from it based on it’s difficulty, but once it went on sale I jumped on it…and have been kicking myself for waiting so long to enjoy the game!

There are two characters to choose from in Dead Nation…a guy and a lady. The only difference between them is the color of their clothing and gun’s laser sight (to help you differentiate between the two when playing co-op). The general story is that zombies have taken over the world, and for some reason these two characters are immune from the zombie virus. The two characters then embark on a mission to help a scientist trace the cause of the virus outbreak while surviving increasing hordes of zombies.

New Resistance Novel, “A Hole in the Sky” in the Works

Wow, this is funny. Just last night I was musing about my book review of Resistance: Gathering Storm, and was saying that I hoped there would be another Resistance novel written. I just happened to check out the PlayStation blog today, and they just announced this morning that there is indeed another book in the works. Titled “A Hole in the Sky”, and written by the same author as “Gathering Storm” (William C. Dietz), the new novel will take place following the events of Resistance 2, and will be a bridge for the story to connect it to Resistance 3, which comes out in November.

I’m pretty stoked for this new book, and I hope it answers some questions; the biggest one being “what the hell happened to Cole at the end of Resistance 2?!” Chances are I will be picking it up on release date, using the Borders gift card I have yet to use from Christmas.

Last January, I checked out my top ten most viewed blog posts ranging from when the site started in April 2009 until January 2010. Today I was using Google Analytics to see how my site traffic has been the past week, and I decided to see how it was for all of 2010. While some of my posts continue to be popular, it seems that some new ones from the past year have swooped in and usurped some of my posts from 2009. So without further ado, here are my Top Ten Blogs of 2010 (in order of visits received):

November 2011 is Gonna Break My Wallet

So I was kinda watching the VGAs last night, and what I didn’t watch I followed on joystiq’s live blog, and the game announcements for next year were epic. It’s not like there were one or two game announcements to get me excited…there were FOUR! Four games which come from some of my most adored franchises, and they all come out in November. This Fall season didn’t offer too many must-haves for me, aside from Fallout: New Vegas, but next year is a different story indeed.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be released on 11/1/11. I love the Uncharted series, and Uncharted 2 took the franchise to new heights by adding in some awesome co-op and multiplayer modes, which really added to the life and replay value of the game. I’ve got my fingers crossed that there will finally be some campaign co-op, especially since there are almost always two characters on screen at any given time in the games. Read More »

Pros and Cons of Mass Effect 2 Going Cross-Platform

To the horror of 360 “fanboys” and the cheers of PS3 users, it was officially announced yesterday at Gamescom that Mass Effect 2 would be released on the PS3 next January. To add on to my anti-fanboy argument, when I looked at the post on Joystiq (see above embedded link) for this news, I saw several comments where people were either saying “nooooooo” or “this sucks now all we have is halo and fable”. That is just stupid talk, and I hate it. I would be pleased as punch if God of War went to the 360, and I think it should! While this is a major victory for gamers who only own a PS3, it also has some problems.

The Pros

First and foremost, the biggest pro is that more people will be able to enjoy the wonder world of Mass Effect. If I didn’t have a 360 I would be just as happy, and being a 360 owner I’m not crying over this…I hate console-exclusive games. The fact that before I had a 360 I never got to touch the likes of Left 4 Dead, Mass Effect, and Castle Crashers, and that I know that there are people out there in the world who have never played Uncharted, God of War, or Resistance, just makes me so angry. There is absolutely no way any gamers win from console-exclusive games…unless they count “bragging rights” as a pro. Personally, I don’t, and I think the only people who benefit from exclusive games are the system owners (Sony of Microsoft), since a person like me has to own both systems to enjoy all the greatest games. Not even the game developers win, because they would sell a hell of a lot more units of a game if it appeared on both systems.

So that all being said, gamers will win because more people will be able to enjoy the story of Mass Effect, and Bioware will win because more copies of the game will sell. It can also be assumed that, with this happening, that Mass Effect 3, due out next year, will also be a cross-platform game, which is great. Read More »

My First 24 Hours of 360 Goodness: The Technical Stuff

I’ve had the system for a full 24 hours, and I wanted to lay down my first impressions of the system and the games I’ve checked out so far. Firstly, I would like to address the controller. It’s nice, and is very comfortable in my hand. I like how the left analog stick is slightly higher than the right one, giving you a more natural feel. I was also glad to see that there was a sync button, like the PS3 controller has, to get to the main menu, and to turn the system on. Good stuff! However, there were two things I’m not as big a fan of. First, I don’t like the directional pad. It feels kind of wobbly, as it is on a raised, circular platform of sorts. The PS3 controller has the directional just as four separate buttons, while the 360 has it as one big button. It works fine and all, but just feels a little odd. Secondly, I was disappointed in the controller power situation. I like how the PS3 controller has a battery installed right inside the controller, and to charge it you just plug it into either the system or a computer…wherever you can find a nearby USB drive. The 360 controller CAN do that, but only if you purchase a separate device that hooks it up to do that. Otherwise, your two options are to use two AA batteries per controller or to purchase a battery charging station, which is the path I chose to go. Don’t get me wrong, this is not going to kill me or anything, but I just liked the convenience of being able to use my PS3 controller out of the box and never have to worry about changing batteries. The 360 controller is still pretty awesome.

Ive had the site since April, and I was curious to see what my top ten blogs were. So I went into my Google Analytics records and checked it out. I love using Google Analytics, and its so much easier than trying to read the reports from Blue Host. I knew two of the posts would be up there, but others were quite a surprise.

1.Explanation of Combat Arts in Sacred 2

This came as no surprise. I knew from looking at other reports that this was my most popular post. I think I did a search to see why, and there is some combination you could put in about Sacred 2 and combat arts that landed me on page one on google.

2. Whale Wars Sucks

This also was not a big surprise, and was the post that had the most random comments. If you google the term whale wars sucks, I come up at number four, which is awesome. Man, I hate that show…

3. My Shadow Warrior Character Build Guide

Another post I knew was very popular. I had made a build guide for the Shadow Warrior in Sacred 2, who seems to be the most popular character to play as. Thus, this was a pretty big hit on my blog.

4. My Announcement of Future Character Builds in Sacred 2

For some reason, a post about what I intended to do in the future made it to my number four most popular post. It doesnt really do much but say “hey, pretty soon I will start making some character build guides.”

5. Axis & Allies 50th Anniversary Edition

This one was a surprise. I didnt even play the game…I just commented on how cool it looks and how much I would love to play it. Man, I need to get some nerd friends up here to play a game of A&A…

6. Resistance: Gathering Storm Book Review

This one was also a surprise. I dont know how it got on here, but my little review of a fairly unpopular book (as far as I can tell) made it to #6 on my blog. Bravo Resistance. Bravo.

7. My Guess At an NHL Announcement

This post makes me laugh. In July the NHL announced that it would make a major announcement at Fenway Park. Common sense told me that that would be the location of the 2010 Winter Classic, and I indeed was correct in my guess. The best part is that this post did not get popular until December, when the Winter Classic was approaching.

8. Batman: Arkham Asylum Demo Review

This only cracks me up because my review of the demo is more popular than my first impressions of the full game… Hmmm, I just realized that I never wrote up a full review of the game…

9.  Wolverine Game Review

This came as a complete surprise. I didnt notice that my review of the Wolverine game was this high up on my blog.

10. My High Elf Character Build Guide

I thought this one was going to be more popular. Its my build guide for the High Elf in Sacred 2.

So there you have it, my top 10 most popular posts. Thanks for looking, and I look forward to seeing how it changes in the coming months.

Why Do I Suck at FPS Games?

Its true, its true. One of the most popular genres on the market today are one of my least favorite. Not because they are not fun, but because I suck so badly at them. I love playing the single player campaigns on FPS’. I enjoyed shooting my way through the Medal of Honor series on the PS1 and PS2, and I rocked through the likes of Resistance, Bioshock, and Wolfenstein on my PS3.

However, my qualm is not with the single player campaigns. My problem is with multiplayer games, which is the meat of a FPS. I am really horrible at them. When I play against others online, Im lucky if I die less than ten times in a round and get one kill myself. I dont know what it is, but I dont have the proper training/skill to successfully play against others online. What got me thinking of all this was that I was playing the MAG Beta tonight, and I did so horribly. I seriously died eight times, and was lucky to get one kill.

The only FPS online game I ever really enjoyed was Resistance 2, but that was only the co-op missions, since you and a bunch of friends got together to take on the AI. The PS3 needs more FPS like that, where you can play through the campaign mode online, taking on the AI with other actual players. I really need to play these games more and get more experience…

Back to Oblivion

oblivion_goty

When I first bought the PS3, the first games I bought were Resistance Fall of Man, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. I knew the least about Oblivion, but from what I had heard about it, it was a truly expansive, epic RPG and I was excited to play. However, I never got very far, but not in a bad way. There is so much to do in the game, and so much to explore, that I created two characters who got far (as far as leveling and hours played goes) but never scratched the main story quest. I would play for a long time, but eventually new games would grab my attention and what not.

Last week I felt like playing a new game, so I decided to whip out Oblivion again. I created my third character (a Orc custom class character) and got cracking. This time what I did was something I havent done yet…I actually checked out the DLC. When I bought Oblivion, I bought the GOTY edition, which included the Shivering Isles expansion. However, I had never even touched it, which is silly since I spent the extra to get the expansion.

This morning I completed the main story of the expansion, and it was a blast. Not only was it a fun quest in a totally unique world (it takes place outside the realm of the main game) but I got a bunch of awesome items, weapons, and armor that I never had before, and it definitely gave me an advantage.

Book Review- Resistance: Gathering Storm

resistance-gathering-storm1

I just finished reading Resistance: Gathering Storm. I originally picked up the book because it tells the story of what happens between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, both video games for the PS3. I was really interested in this because the games themselves offer little transition.

For those not familiar with the storyline, Resistance takes place in the 1950s, in an alternate history in which Nazi Germany never emerged, and there was no WWII. Instead, in the 1940s, Russia suddenly goes into a cone of silence, and nothing gets in or out. Most people assume there is a power struggle going on or something. Then in the early 1950s, the truth becomes known as swarms of the alien race known as Chimera rampage across Russia and quickly overtake all of Europe. Soon, only Britain remains in the fight, and eventually the U.S. sends over some troops to try and help them push the invading Chimera back.

Resistance: Gathering Storm

So I was playing Resistance 2 with some guys from co-optimus last week, and one of them mentioned that he had read a novel based on Resistance. I was immediately interested, so over the weekend I found it and ordered it from amazon. It came in yesterday, and I got a chapter done last night.

Its interesting. It covers the span between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, which is good. Resistance ends with you defeating the Chimera in England, and Resistance 2 starts with the Chimera in the middle of the U.S. invasion. As of Resistance Fall of Man, the Chimera had never stepped foot into the U.S., so it made me wonder what happened. Gathering Storm will fill in those gaps for me.

I look forward to breezing through the book. It seems to be short and sweet, which is just fine, as long as the story is good. I’ll write up a review when I finish it.
