Move over Spike’s VGA…you were and still are a whopping disappointment to the gaming community. Why you think I’d rather watch some jerk jump onto a Velcro wall or some deuche in a mouse helmet spin tunes rather than allowing the winning developers to give a one-minute speech that didn’t end in a tea-bagging incident is beyond me. But enough of that…this is my personal Game of the Year awards. These are the games I played and enjoyed the most this year, and some may be expected or a surprise. Just sit back, relax and enjoy.

Action/ Adventure Game of the Year: Batman: Arkham City

Batman: Arkham Asylum was successful in making a game in which you actually felt like Batman. It concentrated more on stealth, gadgets and puzzles than any other Batman game before. With Arkham City, Rocksteady Studios built on top of what it had already achieved and made it a bit better by adding a sandbox-style environment that the player could explore at will to uncover side missions and search for crimes in progress. The supporting cast of heroes and villains (and the voice actors that bring each to life) is phenomenal and despite all the baddies Batman faces the game never seems over-crowded. The combat is simple to learn yet complex to master and the urge to track down every last Riddler trophy is tempting (especially when the lives of hostages are on the line.) Batman: Arkham City makes for a fun romp through Gotham as the caped crusader and is easily the best Action/Adventure game of 2011.

It has been a nerve-racking thirteen hours. As of 8:30 last night Amazon hadn’t listed my pre-ordered copy of Skyrim as shipped yet. Finally at 8:42 I got the e-mail that UPS had taken possession of the precious cargo. By 7:00 this morning the game was loaded onto the local delivery truck and was bound for my apartment. And then, at 10:46 this morning, I ripped open the package that the man in brown had delivered and beheld Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in all it’s glory. Here’s the map that came with the pre-order:

Goodbye world, see you in a few months.

Resistance 3 is Out, Dead Island Sneaks In

Believe it or not, after thinking about my choices and talking with friends, I’ve decided to scrap my pre-order of Resistance 3, and instead go for Dead Island. That may be shocking to hear, seeing how I spent so much time talking about Resistance and I’ve barely said two peeps about Dead Island. But in the end, it came down to replay value, and Dead Island will give me more game for my money than Resistance 3 will.

Resistance 3 offers a campaign that can be played either solo or with a friend, as well as a couple of the usual competitive multiplayer modes. That’s right…the awesome eight player co-op mode from Resistance 2 has been scratched. Now everyone should know by now that I’m not a fan of the multiplayer scene (because I suck), so I won’t be touching that at all. That just leaves a campaign, and it’s probably not too time consuming at all. So all in all, I’ll probably go through two playthroughs at most and then be done with it. Then it will just sit around, collect dust, and eventually be traded in for less than half of what I paid for it.

Then there’s Dead Island. Read More »

Borders Just Made My Shit List

I had pre-ordered George R.R. Martins next book, A Dance with Dragons, in March using a gift card I received for Christmas. The book doesn’t release until July, so now that we are moving I needed to change the shipping address. This was something I could not do online (I could not do anything with my order online) so I called customer service and got a hold of someone surprisingly quick. Unfortunately, that was the most helpful thing they would be able to do for me tonight.

I explained my issue to the customer service rep, and after going through an annoying process of verifying all my information, she then informs me that orders cannot be modified once they are placed. Not for nothing, but she could have at least told me that from the get-go. She then says that my only option is to cancel the pre-order and then re-order it, which I agree to since it’s not too big a deal. Then she informs me that she has to put me on hold and transfer me to the cancellation department because she can’t cancel orders. While on hold I lose the connection, and have to call them back. A Dance with Dragons Finally Receives a Release Date; Available for Pre-Order

George R.R. Martin has finally gotten off his duff and completed work on book five in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series…A Dance with Dragons will be released on July 12, 2011 (in a whopping 900 pages hardcover.) You can see a message from Martin, along with a countdown to the book, on his website. The book has been in the making for quite some time, seeing how book four, A Feast for Crows, was published in October of 2005. It was beginning to feel like Stephen King’s progress with the “Dark Tower” series, seeing how book III, The Wastelands, was published in 1991, book IV, Wizard and Glass, in 1997, and then book V, Wolves of the Calla, was published in 2003. I’m hoping that Martin continues to mirror King in this way, especially since the final two works in the “Dark Tower” series were published in 2004.

A Dance with Dragons is available for pre-order now, as I received an e-mail from Amazon informing me of this today. I would normally have pre-ordered through Amazon, but I still had a $50 gift card to Borders from Christmas, which I was actually saving for this very book. The Borders price was a bit cheaper than Amazon, at $17.50 compared to Amazon’s $19.25. However, Amazon would end up the cheaper with free shipping, while I had to pay $4 for shipping from Borders. But then again, I had the gift card, so it didn’t really cost me anything. Read More »

More Info on SvR 2011

I managed to stumble across a review written by one of the guys over at IGN who got to spend some time with the game. What he had to say basically spells out that this could very well be the best installment of the series. One of the interesting things he mentions is about online play. He was able to play a six-player Royal Rumble match online, and all he had to say was good things…he didn’t mention anything about the game lagging. Anyone who has played any other version of SvR knows that the online matches are always plagued by lag, so if the servers dedicated to SvR 2011 are finally up to the task, this could be what really puts the game series on the maps. However, since he was playing an early version of the game, it could just so happen that there are simply very few people using the servers right now, and that once the game’s full release hits on October 26th, there could be more lag going on. I don’t think anyone will know for sure until later this month, but I will be one of the first to report on it!

Another fun-sounding feature is the Road to Wrestlemania. Not only will you take part in the story of the selected character, but you will also interact with other wrestlers backstage in-between matches. Doing these “side quests”, as the article refers to them, your wrestler will gain the ability to purchase upgrades that increase their stats. This goes for anyone, not just CAWs (create-a-wrestler), so that definitely adds in some fun features. However, what I’m really excited for is the Road to Wrestlemania storyline titled “Versus the Undertaker” where you can take one of the pro wrestlers or your CAW, and attempt to end the Undertaker’s undefeated Wrestlemania streak. That sounds like it will be a blast, and with the confirmation that Paul Bearer is in the game, that storyline is something that I’m really going to enjoy. Read More »

God of War III Ships Tuesday

god-of-war-3-box-art

It has finally come…March 16th is just around the corner, meaning that in a few mere days God of War III will be making it’s way to my house (I pre-ordered it from Gamestop.) I really have no idea what to expect. I have been avoiding reading up on the game, ignoring any review or article I see about it in magazines or online. I have also boycotted the demo and have not touched it, since I did not want to go into the game with any misconceptions based on anything that was not the final version of the game. God of War III is definitely one of my most-anticipated sequels, and would only be overshadowed by the release of a Kingdom Hearts 3 on the PS3.

Once I receive the game, you know darn well that all other games will be stepping aside for the time being, and all my gaming time will be solely devoted to the masterpiece which is GoW III.

Boycotting the God of War III Demo (for good reason)

Today’s PSN update includes a demo for God of War III, and I for one am not downloading it. Not because I hate God of War, but because I don’t want to ruin the experience. I have the game pre-ordered from Gamestop, so I am definitely going to be owning it when it launches in a few mere weeks. I don’t want to spoil it by cheating and taking a peek at the demo before playing the finished game. That being said, I am not going to play the demo.

But I know it is going to rock!!!!

Gamestop Buys My Loyality, Pre-order GoW III From Them over Amazon

I am always flaunting the Gamestop giftcards I receive from doing surveys. I had two saved up (totally $50), and was all set to pre-order God of War III from them. However, I also checked out Amazon (since I pre-ordered Bioshock 2 from them) and compared the two offers.

Gamestop offers:

  • the game for the full MSRP of $59.99
  • an exclusive skin
  • free “value” shipping, which takes 5-11 days

Amazon offers:

  • the game at a discounted price of $56.99
  • an exclusive skin
  • $10 off your next video game purchase from Amazon
  • free release-date shipping, meaning I get to play the game the day it comes out

The “Not so Exclusive” Juggernaut Character from Gamestop

So this whole thing really got me mad. I had pre-ordered MUA2 for the “exclusive” Juggernaut code. I generally hate pre-ordering, but when the benefit was this good, I had to.

Then last Thursday Juggernaut was available on PSN for a $1.99 DLC.

Now, maybe its just me, but an “exclusive” Juggernaut character is one that is only available through Gamestop, and not through PSN. Dont get me wrong, Im not mad that its on DLC. Im glad…I think that making something as beneficial as an additional character an exclusive offer is stupid.

Anyway, my point is that Gamestop is messed up for claiming it was going to be exclusive, when it clearly was not. I only pre-ordered (thus paying the MSRP of $59.99) to get this once-in-a-lifetime character. Had I known that PSN would offer it, even though it was not free, I would not have pre-ordered. I would have just got it through Gamefly, do the “keep it now” for $47.99, get my 10% discount for having the year membership, and then use my $5 game credit you get every three months.

Bottom line is that I could have got MUA2 and Juggernaut for about $45 or so in the end (getting the game from Gamefly and then buying Jugs from PSN), but instead was misled into paying $60.

For shame Gamestop, for shame.

I Gave in to Gamestop and Preordered Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 to get Juggernaut

Yup, its official. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is a must-have for me. However, I was initially planning on waiting for Christmas to ask my parents or someone else to get it for me as a gift. I would have been able to wait a few extra months before partaking in the awesomest collection of Marvel heroes (and villains) ever assembled. However, I ended up going to Gamestop today and preordered the game. Why, you ask? One word…Juggernaut.

I mean, come on, its the Juggernaut, bitch!
