Fried Game Consoles, or The Importance of Having a Good Surge Protector

Only slightly exaggerated

So there I was…Shell was doing some research on the computer last night, which meant it was time for me to play a bit. I turned the PS3 on, booted up the new Jurassic Park game, and was in the options screen getting things situated when all of a sudden my PS3 just died. There were no blinking lights, no beeps and blips, just complete and utter silence and stillness. I pushed and held buttons, plugged and unplugged wires, gave the PS3 a tour of all the outlets in the apartment, but no such luck. I was horrified, and it got even worse as I tried to turn the system back on without success. I was crushed.

This morning I gave Amazon a call to see about getting an exchange. I had purchased this system in September, so the 30 day return policy was long overdue. But I didn’t let Amazon’s policy stop me from getting what I wanted. I spent an hour talking to two customer service reps and one supervisor before I convinced them to give me a refund. It was a battle, but a battle worth fighting, as the alternative was to wait weeks for Sony to “fix” it, and we all know those don’t always go as planned. So I packed the PS3 up and took it off to UPS so that Amazon can do what they want with it. Read More »

House of the Dead: Overkill: Extended Edition Coming to the PS3

About two years ago I reviewed House of the Dead: Overkill for the Wii and praised it’s awesome gameplay and ridiculously, over-the-top 70s horror movie story. It is hands down one of my favorite Wii games and I definitely consider it a standard to hold all other rail shooters against, not only for the zombie-killing fun, but also for the great story (something that is lacking in most rail shooters.) Well, I heard the great news today that come October 25th, House of the Dead: Overkill will be making its way to the PS3, complete with Move-treatment. The following information has been confirmed:

  • Will be playable in HD-gloriousness
  • Can be enjoyed in 3D if you so desire
  • The many awesome cutscenes have been revamped
  • Being the “extended edition”, there are at least two totally new levels
  • There are also two new game modes
  • There will be new enemies
  • There will be new weapons
  • The boss fights have been improved (which I assume means they will be harder) and the final boss fight has been extended
  • Two-player local co-op
  • Trophies (let’s hope there’s one titled “Return to the Womb”) Read More »

LevelUp’s Rock Band Ottoman: The Ideal Storage Solution

Like many gamers, I gave in to the addictive fun that is the music game genre. As a result, I have a few plastic instruments lying around the living room. It was a cluttered mess, and didn’t exactly look all that great in the open. I was also wondering how to safely pack the instruments (the drum set in particular) for the upcoming move.

I then remembered reading about ottomans that were specifically designed for Rock Band storage. I first went to Amazon, but didn’t like the one they had on there. Then I remembered reading an article on co-optimus about them, and went to see which brand was mentioned. It was an ottoman from LevelUp, and I believe the model I purchased is the “Rock Band Double Ottoman”. I searched online for it, and was surprised to find quite the deal for it at Gamestop of all places. It’s available on their website for the price of $89.99, with $20 or more S&H, depending on the speed you choose. The lesser quality ottoman on Amazon was $119 with free shipping, but I wanted this beautiful piece from LevelUp, so I was sold. I placed the order online on Sunday night and  when I came home last night there was a huge box waiting for me.

I was super excited so I grabbed the nearest knife and started opening up the package. I couldn’t wait to see this wonderful piece of black furniture that would be solving my plastic peripheral woes.

Let the Chaos Begin

There is now officially less than two weeks before I hop in the car and make the grueling drive down to Myrtle Beach, SC to begin the next phase of my life. There is much to do around here and we just started packing up stuff yesterday. It was sad to begin boxing up my video games, particularly the Wii. To conserve space I popped all my PS3 and 360 discs into a binder, and that will go in a attache case with my controllers and other accessories for those systems so that I will still be able to play down south. I just didn’t see the point in doing the same with the Wii since it gets limited play time compared to the other systems, plus there are just sooo many accessories for it!

Also, this is my last week of work, with Thursday being my last day! Man, I will not missing being up at 2:45am…at least until Shell starts popping out some kids. She will be working into next week so I’ll be home doing a lot of the packing and other stuff that needs to get done before we leave.

That being said, I’m already backed up on here as it is. I have a draft about “Guys Weekend In” that was the weekend of June 4th as well as a geocaching adventure that is about 80% complete. I hope to have those finished by the end of the week, but don’t be expecting much else from me until the move is completed. Not that I have a hardcore following of fans who will say “hey, Rob’s been slacking off lately”…

Getting Into Some New Games

WWE SvR 2011 continues to take up a good chunk of what gaming time I have…or at least it was, until I finally unleashed Borderlands this weekend. I had forgotten how much fun it was, and I decided to start from scratch and re-roll a new character. I’m currently playing a Hunter, focusing on the Rogue skill set. The thing I realized today is that Borderlands is has many similarities with Fallout 3 and New Vegas, in that it successfully merges the FPS and RPG genres into one neat, awesome package. I’m pretty addicted to Borderlands right now, and I’m regretting taking a year to finally buy it. This one will be lasting quite some time, between four distinct characters and all the juicy DLC which I have but have not touched yet.

On the DS front, I am getting into Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure. The game is a surprise hit, and is also a combo of genres, to a degree. The meat of the game plays as a platformer, as you control Professor Hatsworth in a quest for a golden suit. One of the great features of the game is that Hatsworth is a British chap, and has the look of an aristocratic, eccentric British adventurer, complete with elephant gun, sword, cane, and monocle. Oh, and the bowler hat! The twist is that while the platforming action is going on the top screen, the bottom screen contains an advancing puzzle of blocks, kind of like Bejeweled. Eventually, if the blocks get to far up, they will begin to invade the platforming screen and can cause trouble. Thus, as you run around the main level, you will continually have to stop that and switch to the puzzle screen to clear it out. Doing this is also what gives Hatsworth health, extra lives, and “energy” which is used to more powerful projectiles, as well as for donning a gigantic robotic suit. It’s proven to be quite the addictive game so far.

3D Dot Game Heroes = Legend of Zelda?

3D Dot Game Heroes is one of those games that has been in the backlog of my Gamefly queue for quite some time. I was unable to snag the only “new release” I wanted (Force Unleashed II), so Gamefly sent me 3D Dot Game Heroes. After putting about an hour into it, I am overwhelmed with feelings of nostalgic bliss as this game definitely takes me back.

3D Dot Game Heroes is a top-down action RPG, which plays similarly to the first Legend of Zelda, from the NES days. Sure, the graphics are spruced up and the characters, enemies, and environment all have a 3D-ish feel, but the gameplay is so reminiscent that it actually made me stop and wonder “is this game licensed by Nintendo?” As I said, I only played an hour so far, but here’s the similarities between this game and Legend of Zelda: Read More »

Pros and Cons of Mass Effect 2 Going Cross-Platform

To the horror of 360 “fanboys” and the cheers of PS3 users, it was officially announced yesterday at Gamescom that Mass Effect 2 would be released on the PS3 next January. To add on to my anti-fanboy argument, when I looked at the post on Joystiq (see above embedded link) for this news, I saw several comments where people were either saying “nooooooo” or “this sucks now all we have is halo and fable”. That is just stupid talk, and I hate it. I would be pleased as punch if God of War went to the 360, and I think it should! While this is a major victory for gamers who only own a PS3, it also has some problems.

The Pros

First and foremost, the biggest pro is that more people will be able to enjoy the wonder world of Mass Effect. If I didn’t have a 360 I would be just as happy, and being a 360 owner I’m not crying over this…I hate console-exclusive games. The fact that before I had a 360 I never got to touch the likes of Left 4 Dead, Mass Effect, and Castle Crashers, and that I know that there are people out there in the world who have never played Uncharted, God of War, or Resistance, just makes me so angry. There is absolutely no way any gamers win from console-exclusive games…unless they count “bragging rights” as a pro. Personally, I don’t, and I think the only people who benefit from exclusive games are the system owners (Sony of Microsoft), since a person like me has to own both systems to enjoy all the greatest games. Not even the game developers win, because they would sell a hell of a lot more units of a game if it appeared on both systems.

So that all being said, gamers will win because more people will be able to enjoy the story of Mass Effect, and Bioware will win because more copies of the game will sell. It can also be assumed that, with this happening, that Mass Effect 3, due out next year, will also be a cross-platform game, which is great. Read More »

Wii Review: Wii Sports Resort

While on my honeymoon, I stumbled across a $50 Best Buy gift card in my wallet, and was itching to head to the mall and buy something neat. In the end, I decided to finally pick up the Wii Motion Plus, which came packaged with Wii Sports Resort. I enjoyed the casual games of Wii Sports, so I figured I would equally enjoy Wii Sports Resort.

Wii Sports Resort is kind of a mixed bag, with some great games, as well as some lame ones. There are twelve total, though two (golf and bowling) are basically clones from Wii Sports, but with the Motion Plus controls. Before I get into the game, let me talk about Wii Motion Plus. It’s a small device that attaches to the bottom of the Wii Remote, but the problem is that the Motion Plus is encased in a silicon sleeve, so you have to go through some effort to attach it each time. The Nunchuck then connects to the bottom of the Motion Plus. This makes the controller bulky…what was initially a nice light controller in your hand is now getting weighed down with the Motion Plus and the casing. However, it’s only a minor annoyance, and if anything I hate it more for the effort to hook it up than the weight it adds (which is actually minor, but I just want to complain about it.)

Wii First Impressions: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Yeah, I will admit that it has been awhile since I turned on the ol’ Wii. But once I picked up New Super Mario Bros. Wii, I had reason to go back to the white console. Mario Bros. Wii is genious, much like its DS counterpart, in that it brings back the simplicity of old-school Mario platformers with some new twists and gorgeous graphics to make a truly awesome and fun game.

The game’s story is nothing new, and even harkens back to the days of Super Mario 3…Princess Peach is kidnapped by Bowser’s kids (all the guys from Mario 3, along with Bowser Jr.), and it’s up to Mario and friends to save the day. I say “and friends” because one of the best features of Mario Bros. Wii is the addition of co-op…up to four players can take part in the game AT THE SAME TIME! So think old school Mario platformer, but with four buddies being able to play together (as Mario, Luigi, and two toads.) Now I’m not as big a fan of the inclusion of toads, and I think it would have been cooler if they threw in Wario and Waluigi, or didn’t have the Princess kidnapped so she could be a playable character. Also, if the characters all had unique abilities a la Mario 2, it would have been cool too. But in the end, I can’t complain about a game that allows four friends to go platforming together.

Instead, I starting thinking back through my life about some fond memories I have of playing video games, from growing up to nowadays. I  brainstormed a bit about these memories and to see what would to mind, and then I organized them chronologically and as you see below. Enjoy taking this trip down memory lane with me.

DS Quick Review: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box

I think that I can easily say that Professor Layton is one of my favorite DS series of games. I really enjoyed playing through Professor Layton and the Curious Village, and I couldnt wait to get my hands on the next game in the series. Two hours (and twenty puzzles) in, and I am having a blast.

For those of you not familiar with the series, Professor Layton is a “puzzleholic.” The game entails you navigating Professor Layton and his apprentice through a world map of sorts, and you interact with either people or the environment to find puzzles. Some of these puzzles are mandatory and must be solved in order to advance through the game, while others are purely optional (but you still get points for completing them.)

Learning to Waggle with the Wii

The Nintendo Wii gets a really bad rap, as far as the “next gen.” consoles go. It has inferior graphics to its bigger cousins, the X-Box 360 and the PlayStation 3. Many Wii games that are churned out are produced to satisfy a “casual” market of gamers, not the hardcore gamers who favor the PS3 or 360. The Wii’s controls (the Wii Remote and the Nunchuck) are not traditional, and they feel foreign in the hands of veteran gamers. Also, cross-system games (such as Call of Duty, Bully, and Madden) are seen as horrible when ported to or created for the Wii, due to the inferior graphics and “gimmicky” controls (often requiring the player to waggle the Wii Remote repeatedly, causing severe soreness) that come packaged with Nintendo’s little white console.

However, the Wii is a lot better than people make it out to be. The trick is to be a smart consumer, and do some in-depth research on games before making purchases. Yes, there are a lot of extremely terrible Wii games (Chicken Shoot, Redneck Games, and Carnival Games) that are pumped into the market in an attempt to make a quick buck. Let’s be honest…the majority of the Wii’s games fall into this category of “shovel ware”. However, to an experienced and savvy gamer, the Wii does have a decent number of titles that are a lot of fun, and really save the system from being a piece of junk.

DS Quick Review: Scribblenauts

So I picked up Scribblenauts the other day, and have been checking it out at night before going to bed. When it first came out I had heard good things about it and was anticipating it, and I ended up getting  a pretty good deal for it.

You play as Maxwell, a kid with a notepad. The game is divided into areas and stages, and to get past each stage you simply have to grab the level’s star (called a starite.) Sounds easy, right? Well, it gets a bit more complicated then that, and thats where the genius of the game comes in to play.

Yet Another Retarded Gadget for the Wii…

Well, a few months ago Nintendo revealed the Wii Vitality Sensor at E3. I thought it was a pretty silly idea. While casual gaming is all well and good, I would be happier seeing Nintendo work on more decent games (not their usual shovelware) than some new device.

Well, Nintendo has done it again. This time around, they have found a patent that Nintendo filed for an inflatable cushion. Apparently the purpose of this giant cushion is for you to mount it, and then use it to simulate riding an animal (particularly a horse). The Wiimote will go in a pocket and will be used to judge your balance and speed, and the Nunchuck will be held sideways as the reigns.

What a ridiculous idea. Not for nothing, but I cant see myself ever wanting to simulate horse riding. Though I must say, if they used this to create a next-gen version of Panzer Dragoon, then thats a different story. I mean, come on, who wouldnt want to use this new setup to fly around on a dragon in the sky and do battle…

Wii Review: House of the Dead Overkill

AS_Wii_IN_UKV.qxp

As those of my loyal readers know, I personally believe that some of the best Wii games are rail shooters. The Wiimote is just a really effecient device (especially when used in conjunction with the Nyko Perfect Shot), that is far more accurate than any console light gun. I really enjoyed House of the Dead 2 & 3 on the Wii, but it was a really difficult game. I could never beat it, even with Steve by my side. Also, there was no story to the game, which is due to the fact that it is a direct port of the arcade games. However, House of the Dead Overkill remedies both of these flaws, and throws you into a world you never thought you would see on the Wii. It is a very mature game for the Wii, with plenty of foul language, blood and gore, and also some really, REALLY freaky stuff (such as when the villain “returns” to his mother’s womb.) Steve and I had a blast rockin’ through it this weekend, and you and your friends will too.

HotD Overkill is a prequel to the HotD series, and as such, it has a story to go along with it. It is the story, and the movies that progress the story, that really sell the game. The game’s story mode itself is played like a cheesy “XXX” 70s horror movie. The two main characters are Agent G (from the other HotD games) and an African American named Issac Washington. Washington makes the game. Now I never use foul language on this site to be kid friendly and all, but Im gonna bypass that this one time just for this post. Washington plays off just like a crazy Samuel L.Jackson type, always yelling things like “motherfucker!” (he must say it over 100 times throughout the course of the game) and “Im gonna rip your mother fucking balls off!”. The banter between the two of them is truly classic and really sells the game. But its more than that also. The game “feels” like a cheesy movie. Aside from their one liners, there is also tons of ridiculous narration, and the stages are given very cheesy names like “Papa’s Palace of Pain” and “Scream Train.” It is by far one of the more enjoyable video game movies I have watched in a long time, simply because it brings along a very funny and cheesy story.

hotdoverkill the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-20090116014713957_640w the-house-of-the-dead-overkill-20090129031440655_640w

So, to me, the story and production are the biggest selling points, and totally worth it. After playing it, it quickly became my favorite rail shooter on the Wii, replacing my long time favorite, Ghost Squad. But of course I know you want to know about gameplay. Well what do you think?! Its a rail shooter where you shoot up zombies!!!

Here is a side note: the game dialogue specifically states that the enemies are mutants and not zombies, but I will continue to use the word zombie because that what I feel they best resemble.

Weekend of Gaming Comes to a Close

So I had two successful gaming nights on Friday and Saturday. Steve and I got our game on and rocked out the Wii and PS3. On Friday we played together in person, then later that night played for a few more hours online. We played:

PS3:

  • Fat Princess
  • Gunstar Heroes (played twice so that each of us now have 100% complete trophies)
  • Mortal Kombat II
  • High Stakes Poker
  • Super Puzzler Fighter
  • 3 on 3 NHL Arcade

Wii:

  • Boom Blox Bash Party
  • House of the Dead: Overkill (played through and beat story mode)
  • Mario Kart Wii
  • Smarty Pants

While waiting for him to get off of work both days, I slacked around and beat the heat in my parents house by watching movies in the basement. I watched Terminator, Cloverfield, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and Jackie Brown.

All in all it was a nice relaxing weekend, though I do miss the central air at my apartment. I was very happy to get my first 100% complete trophy, and am pretty close to finishing up 3 on 3 NHL (as far as trophies go).

Later this week I will be posting up at least three reviews, for Fat Princess, Battlefield 1943, and House of the Dead: Overkill. All three are aresome games.

Wii Review- Punch-Out

Little Mac is back for Punch-Out for the Wii. It plays very similarly to the NES Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out, minus the insanely difficult Tyson. I say this because while the controls can be used via waggling the Wiimote andNunchuck (a la Wii Sports Boxing), the game does not feel right unless you’re using the classic controls…that is, you turn the Wiimote on its side and use the 1 and 2 button as you would use the A and B button on a NES controller. This gives you a sense of nostalgia as you enter to ring to tangle with the classics like Glass Joe and King Hippo, as well as some new comers.

DS Review- Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Wow…I never thought a gamed based on law would be so fun.

You play the game as a defense lawyer, Phoenix Wright. As would expect in a law game as a lawyer, the main part of the gameplay takes place in the courtroom. Basically, you use the evidence you have collected (autopsy reports, murder weapons, photos, etc.) to poke holes in the testimony of witnesses, as you attempt to prove your clients innocent.

Not only do you handle courtroom proceedings, but you also have to do some investigative work. Inbetween cases, you will have to go to crime scenes and search for evidence. You will also be able to speak with witnesses there, who can give you decisive information and evidence.

The game was surprisingly a lot of fun. You cant help but smile as you turn the prosecution’s witness into the actual commitor of the crime, or prove that he or she is lying to protect the true culprit. The graphics are really good- sharp, crisp, and colorful. The characters are also pretty cool, from the evil prosecutor who believes that everyone is guilty to the bumbling detective who seems to always makes mistakes.I also loved the fact that you could save the game at any point, because sometimes the cases take over a 1/2 hour to complete, and you dont always have a 1/2 hour.

If you have a DS I recommend checking it out. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is the first game in the series. I believe there are two other games out, but they go by the title Ace Attorney, rather than Phoenix Wright. Check them out…its a fun casual game that will have you thinking as you try and remember little details.
