“Once Upon a Time” and “Grimm”: Tis the Season for Fairy Tales

I was shocked to hear that not only one, but two new TV series based on fairy tales were premiering this season. ABC showed off its new series, Once Upon a Time, on Sunday while NBC aired its first episode of “Grimm” on Friday. Just from the title of both shows you can tell they both revolve around fairy tales of some sort or another, but the two shows are completely different. While Once Upon a Time is a family-friendly show that features many of the classic fairy tale characters, Grimm is a darker and more original show that uses fairy tales as the backdrop for totally original characters. Let’s look more into how these two shows compare. Read More »

The Cape Gets Canceled

I popped on NBC at 9:00pm EST tonight to catch this week’s episode of The Cape, and was shocked to find that it was not on. After doing some online researching, I found that the show was not just being pushed back a week (as has happened several times this season), but has actually been canceled. Thus I am left to make yet another rant about a good show getting canceled before it’s time, much like My Name is Earl and Heroes. It’s funny how Earl, Heroes, and The Cape are all NBC shows…

The worst part of this is that it happened basically mid-season. Yeah, the season was almost over, with only two weeks left, but it is still upsetting to know that I won’t be watching any new episodes of The Cape on TV ever again. However, all is not totally lost. NBC has confirmed that “…the show’s season finale, which was to have aired this past Monday as part of a double-header, instead will premiere online at NBC.com sometime in March.”  Read More »

Series Premiere of “The Cape” (spoilers)

I was watching TV last week, and saw a brief thirty-second teaser for NBC’s new show, The Cape. I had heard nothing about it before this, or until I watched the series premiere tonight, but that teaser had me sold. It looked like a solid super hero series, but with a darker, more serious undertone to it. After watching tonight’s two hour series premiere, I’m pretty happy with the show, and I look forward adding the series to the list of series I watch regularly.

As I said, the show has a more serious/realistic feel to it. It follows the life of Vince, a detective who is eventually framed for murder and then “killed” on television. However, Vince survives, and is taken in by a gang of bank robbers who are actually carnies (I don’t know what it is with these super hero shows and carnies these days…) Vince is trained by the different members where he perfects his melee fighting skills, as well as learns hypnotism and masters the art of escaping and creating illusions, much like David Copperfield. Vince is also trained to wield a special cape and uses it as a major form of combat, as he can whip it around and grab objects at a distance with it.

Now What Am I Going to Watch?!

There are currently three shows that I say I am a true fan of, and will religiously watch them regularly when each new episode airs weekly: Lost, Heroes, and America: The Story of Us. However, all three of the shows are soon to be gone…the series finale of Lost is this Sunday, Heroes has been cancelled, and America is only a mini-series, which will be ending within two weeks. So the big question is: what the hell am I going to watch on TV now? I have nothing to look forward to!!!

The end of Lost is going to be sad. It’s been a solid show the entire series, and I hate to see it go. However, it had to happen at some point. I’m really excited for Sunday to see how they end this awesome series. I’m skeptical as to what they will do, and am afraid that something they will reveal will be completely retarded and I will hate the writers for it. Somethings are better left unexplained, such as the Force (miticlorients?!) and immortals (Highlander II claimed that all the immortals are aliens!!!) So if it’s a good explanation, then give it here, but if it’s a bunch of crap, I would rather not watch it, thank you very much.

The Unfortunate Series Finale of My Name is Earl

Over the past few months, Shell and I have been watching through the four seasons of My Name is Earl from Netflix. We both enjoyed it immensely. It was a simple show, not flashy, and hilarious as heck. For those not familiar with the show, Jason Lee stars as Earl. Earl was a petty thief and overall low-life, until one day he wins the lotto and gets hit by a car. As he recovers, he begins to believe in karma, in that if you do good things, good things will come to you. On that note, he turns over a new leaf, and makes a list of all the bad things he has done in his life. Each episode generally focuses on Earl selecting one of the list items, meeting up with the people he wronged, and finding a way to make it up to them.

There are four seasons of My Name is Earl. Unfortunately, the cast and crew did not know this, and expected to continue making seasons. At the end of season four, NBC (who was airing the show) dropped them. The show attempted to get picked up somewhere else, but that never happened. Thus, the series finale ends with a huge cliff hanger that will never be answered.

Thoughts on the Season Finale of Heroes

Ive been pretty darn excited for tonights season finale. I was hoping it would be a two-hour special, but it was only an hour. In the end, I was pretty pleased, and the preview for the next season takes the show in a whole new area.

I didnt exactly like the idea of Tracy getting to Claire and Noah so quickly and helping them out. I wasnt sure what would happen, but I didnt expect it to be Tracy. Plus, I dont know where she was, but she got there conveniently quick.

I do like the direction that Sylar is taking. Making him out to be a hero was pretty cool. However, I was pretty sure that his powers were locked away in his mind so that he couldnt access them, but he did when facing Doyle (the Puppeteer.) Im thinking that maybe he couldnt use them because he did not want to be tempted to abuse them, but when he needed them to do “good”, they were readily accessible. I was half-expecting Sylar to kill Doyle in the end, but he did not, which was pretty cool.

So Close to the Season Finale of Heroes

So apparently last night was the second to last episode of the season, and it left off with plenty of loose ends. I was discussing it with Steve, and we both agreed that there is quite a lot of  plot to cover before the season ends. Im optimistic that the last episode will be a two-hour special, but I doubt it.

The whole back story of Noah’s past was pretty awesome. It explains quite a bit about who he is and why he does what he does. I was a bit stupified with his “arranged” marriage with Sandra, but everything else was cool.

Previously, on Heroes…

So tonight’s episode of Heroes was pretty damn great. A lot of interesting stuff going on, and as such I am really enjoying this season. It definitely makes up for last season’s mediocreness. And as Ive previously stated, one of the best parts of this new season was the introduction of Samuel and his carnies.

As of tonight’s episode, Samuel finally hit the point Ive been waiting for. This entire season, you know he’s bad, but he doesn’t always come off as being evil, or a villain. However, after having his heart broken, he has crossed that bridge into the world of super villainy, and I like it. He has a pretty amazing power, and from now on he will not be holding back, which means he will be causing quite a bit of evil, which I look forward to.

I Heart Hulu

So Ive just begun checking out Hulu this week, and so far Im liking it. If you dont know, its a website where you can watch TV episodes and movies for free. There is no player or anything to download, as you can watch it right off the site. There are commercial breaks, but only 15-30 seconds long, which isnt too bad.

I like it because it is fast, has good quality, and is convenient. I remember having to watch missed episodes of Heroes or Lost on either NBC or ABCs websites, and it was a pain the the butt. You had to install a player onto your computer first, then you had to follow a confusing series of menus to find the option to play the show you want to watch, then you had to guess which was the most current episode (because they werent numbered or anything). Also, the quality sucked, and the videos often skipped, and it took forever to load up.

Hulu is not like that. You just search for what you want, and if its there it comes up. I just watched an episode of the Simpsons that I missed from a few weeks ago and it was great. The episodes are not only labeled with their title, but also the season and episode numbers, so you know where in the season it is. Good stuff all around. I could have used this a few years ago when I was in my first Oneonta apartment, and didnt have television at all.

I highly recommend checking it out. You can find your favorites that you missed, plus some new stuff that you probably would never watch.

Stanley Cup Final Most-Watched Show

I just found an article which pretty much states that the Stanley Cup final (from last Friday night) was the most-watched show that night. Thats refreshing to hear. I really do wish hockey was more popular here in the U.S. Its such a pain in the ass to find anything NHL-related in stores, such as clothing and other stuff. And when you do find it, its expensive as heck. For example, my Rangers jersey is a plain blank jersey (no name or number on it), and it cost me something like $90. Now you can go to Wal-Mart and find MLB and NFL player jerseys (with the player’s name and number) for like $20-30. Plus there is always a sickening over-abundance of MLB and NFL t-shirts in stores. I wish I was a Yankees fan so that I could buy some new clothes…

Come on America. Hockey is the sport to watch. Its more exciting to watch hockey than to watch baseball and football. Plus hockey is the only sport where you can really “watch your buddy’s back” by being an enforcer. Fighting is expected and accepting in the NHL, as a way of keeping the other team in line. If a baseball player was to do that, he would miss like ten games and pay thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

So come on, wake up and smell the ice. Hockey is far more entertaining than any other pro-sport in America, hands down.
