No more feeling guilty when you hand the video clerk a copy of “Disney Universe”
With my recent console dilemma I was stuck with PS3 games from Gamefly yet no PS3 to play them on. I only have a handful of games for the 360 so I wanted something new to play for a little bit to tide me over until Gamefly can send me a 360 game. Enter the Redbox. I had never used one before, and Netflix has always fulfilled our movie needs just fine. Now that Redbox offers games too I figured I would finally give the service a whirl.
In case you don’t know, Redbox is a giant vending machine located in certain grocery and pharmacy stores that dispenses movies and games. You select your title, slide your credit card through, and they pop the disc out for you to take home. You have until 9:00pm the next day to return it and only pay one day charge ($1.20 for movies, $2.00 for games). If you keep it longer it’s an additional days charge per day. The really neat thing I discovered is that you can go onto their website and see what each kiosk offers, as each one not only has a few different titles but you can also see which discs are available and which are currently being rented. You can even rent a disc off their website and have it reserved so you can pick it up later! Read More »

In case you haven’t gotten it yet, I’m quite the believer when it comes to the unexplainable. For example, I believe that there is a creature roaming the North American forests that is referred to as “Bigfoot”, even though I have never had any first-hand encounters of any kind. I do believe in ghosts/spirits after my own personal encounter in the family vacation home in upstate NY. I also believe in aliens, as in life on other planets. I won’t go so far as to say there are definitely military cover-ups, or that people are abducted, but I do think it is naive for humans to believe that they are the sole lifeforce in what has become an increasingly unfathomable expanse of existence. Plus the fact that I have seen unexplainable things also bolsters my personal views on aliens and UFOs.
My first sighting happened many years ago. I know that it was at my parent’s current house, and that I was in middle school, so that means it must have been during 8th grade in 1995. My dad and I happened to be standing by the living room window looking out, possibly at a deer or some other animal…I don’t remember why we were both looking. But I do remember all of a sudden these two white lights appeared in the sky and began moving sporadically around. It definitely wasn’t a known aircraft due to the insane maneuverability, and the house was far away from bigger towns/cities, so it was definitely not something attributed to that. To this day I still believe I saw a UFO that day, and I know my Dad believed the same thing then. If he still does, or even remembers the incident, is unknown, but I definitely think I’ll be giving him a call tomorrow to ask. Read More »

Growing up I was a huge fan of Marvel comics and regularly read Spider-Man and X-Men, with some Fantastic Four, Ghostrider, and a few others thrown in when I had some extra pocket change and the cover looked sweet. That being said, I never got into Thor at all, and have actually never read any comic with him in it. Yet I was still excited for this movie; not because I was a fan of the Thor comics (which I wasn’t), and not because it was simply another Marvel movie (though that did help a little)…the big selling point for me was my interest in Norse mythology. When studying at Oneonta, I took a course on ancient cultures, and the professor I had was quite the nerd who spent a lot of time teaching mythology and religion, mainly focusing on Greek and Norse mythology. This is where I was introduced to not only the gods like Odin, Thor and Loki, but also the Frost Giants, Fenrir, Ragnarok, the Valkyrie, and more. Ragnarok in particular was a really interesting notion to me, which is basically the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny as far as Norse mythology goes.
Oh, and don’t forget that my cats are named Loki and Odin.

I read a lot growing up. My parent’s didn’t buy us many sweets or toys or other crud, but the one thing they were always willing to buy was books. I had tons of favorites growing up, and one I remember vividly was called “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.” It was a great book, and back then I loved penguins (and as can be seen by my desk, I still do.)

I loved that Netflix bought their instant movie/tv show watching to the home consoles, as it is way better to watch from your own tv as opposed to the computer. I used the PS3 initially, and it worked great. The only downside was that you had to put a Netflix disc in the system, so when I wanted to watch a movie I had to get up and change out the game disc with the Netflix one. Then I got a 360, and the fact that their Netflix features were discless made me watch most of my videos on there. I also thought the load times were faster on the 360, and there was less buffering instances.
But yesterday Sony rolled out their own discless Netflix, and I was instantly hooked. Once you select the movie you want to watch, it is played almost instantly. I would say that there is maybe a two-second load time, if that. Also, I haven’t experienced any buffering or lag during play. Also, the Netflix program itself loads up extremely quickly from the PS3′s XMB. The PS3 has also upgraded it’s Netflix capabilities by offering most of the features the 360 does, mainly the ability to get suggestions, browse more categories, and actually search the instant database for movie titles or actors/actresses. The only feature that the 360 still has over the PS3 is the ability to watch a movie/tv show with your online friends.
I am so glad the PS3 got this upgraded version of Netflix. Not only does it now offer the same features that the 360 does, but it is now superior to the 360, in terms of video quality and upload speeds. I’m not saying that the 360′s Netflix is bad, but the PS3 will offer the same quality experience, just faster. I truly love the instant Netflix on my consoles!!!

We got Stardust in from Netflix kind of on accident. I had been interested in watching it, but I hadn’t intended on seeing it yet. Needless to say, I didn’t keep an eye on my queue, and in it came. However, it ended up being quite a pleasant film, and if anything I was mad at myself for not renting it sooner.
Stardust is a romantic/fantasy/comedy movie, and definitely reminded me of The Princess Bride in terms of how it is presented to the viewer. The basic plot is that a star (that for whatever reason is human) falls from the sky, and everyone wants a piece of it. The protagonist Tristan wants to bring a star to the local woman he has his eyes on to prove his love for her. Some witches want her because, in this fantasy world, witches eat the hearts of stars in order to regain youth and magical power. There are also two princes who are attempting to get the star, because whoever has her necklace will become King. Tristan gets to her first, and attempts to escort her back to his town while avoiding the wily witches and greedy ruthless princes. As might be expected from a romance movie, along the way Tristan falls in love with the star, which eventually leads to a happy ever after.

9 looked like an interesting movie when I first saw the trailer, but I never got around to seeing it in the theaters. I got it in from Netflix over the weekend, and Shell and I watch it tonight. An hour or so after watching it, and Im still a bit tossed up on it.
9 is about a cloth doll (who closely resembles a “sackboy” from LittleBigPlanet) who awakes in a lab in an apocalyptic wasteland. As he ventures out, he finds a desolate world where other dolls live, as well as machines. As the story progresses, it becomes a similar story to that of Terminator, in that a machine with a superior AI comes online and turns against humans, destroying them all. As the movie progresses, 9 leads the other dolls to revolt destroy the machine.

After dinner last night, we went to the movies to see Sherlock Holmes. When I first saw the trailer for the movie I was a bit nervous, because it didnt seem like classic Sherlock Holmes, and it appeared to have a lot of action and explosions and what not. So while this did hold true for the movie, it was done in a tasteful way so that the movie was not ruined, but pretty darn awesome.
Robert Downey Jr. plays Sherlock Holmes, a private investigator of sorts living in London. Downey Jr. plays him pretty well in my opinion, showing off the eccentrics of Holmes. In this movie, Holmes is attempting to solve a case involving the supposed resurrection of a cult leader who had been executed for practicing black magic and performing sacrifices on young women. Downey Jr. portrays Holmes as a genius, but still shows his quirks, which are a bit more “out there” in this movie, but it helps the film rather than ruining it. Like classic Holmes, Downey Jr. spends the movie attempting to solve a case using his insanely amazing analytical, reasoning, and deducing skills. Its a treat to sit there and listen to him blurt out how this crime was committed and how this person did that.

I was going through my Netflix instant queue on the PS3 to find a movie to watch. I had added the movie The Specials, which looked like a spoof on super hero/X-Men movies (since one of the guys looks basically like a broke-ass Nightcrawler). So I gave the movie a go to see how it was. I was pretty disappointed.
So the movie is about a group of super heroes called “The Specials.” As the name implies, they are not the brightest heroes of the bunch, and in a world where there are several super hero teams, they are the last. The movie is not really a direct spoof on any particular heroes or storyline, but on heroes in general. The leader of the group is an arrogant jerk who thinks he is best, but soon finds his team falling apart. Other members include a lady who can talk to demons, a super strong retard, a girl who has “bird powers” (she lays eggs), and more. Eventually the team dissolves due to various conflicts (including an affair between members, selling out to a action figure company, one member leaving to join the more popular team, etc.), and in the end they reunite and learn that they really are heroes, regardless of how lame they are.

I was never a fan of the GI Joe cartoon show or toys growing up. I don’t know why…I think I just liked other things. Regardless, because of this, I watched GI Joe with having no expectations. Well actually just one…I didn’t want it to be corny or lame. While the movie was not lame, it had some corny moments that I did not particularly enjoy, and I will admit I was a bit nervous and skeptical.
My nervousness kicked in early, as the first scene of the movie takes place in France in the 1600s. While I was not a fan of the TV series, I still knew the more popular characters, and I quickly recognized the mask of Destro. I was a bit concerned by this because I didn’t want to see some kind of immortal-like figure that’s been plotting revenge for centuries. My fears were put away to a degree later on when I saw that it was instead his great-great-great-great grandson instead, but I still felt it was kind of weird for his family to be holding a grudge this long.

I received the disc from Netflix yesterday. When placed in the PS3, the disc allows me to access Netflix streaming video services, which is pretty sweet. I mean, its nothing new, as I could always do it on my laptop. But the quality on the laptop was horrible, where it would sometimes lag, skip, or buffer, and the sound was not the greatest either. I dont know if it was my laptop or what (I assume it was, stupid piece of junk) but when I heard that I would be able to do the same from my PS3, and thus be able to watch these videos on my TV rather than the laptop, I couldnt wait.
The minute I got the disc in the house, I loaded up the PS3 and got ready to check it out. First I had to verify my account, so once I got the Netflix program going on the PS3, it generated a random code that I had to enter on Netflix’s website from my laptop. Once that was done, I was ready to go. What I actually get is two different things. First, my entire queue of instant movies and shows is loaded up on the PS3, and I can choose what I want to watch. Secondly, I am able to browse the “top 100″ instant videos for different categories such as comedy, horror, and tv series.

I got an email from Netflix today informing me that the disc for use in the PS3 is shipping today, meaning I’ll get it tomorrow. This is awesome…Ive been waiting to get my hands on this. The disc will allow me to access my Netflix queue from my PS3, so I can then watch any of the instant movies or TV shows on my TV through the PS3.
I used the instant streaming on my laptop a few times, but I wasnt a fan. My laptop isnt the best, so it was kind of lame. Worse off was the sound…it was just horrible. I look forward to being able to plop down on the couch, fire up the PS3, and watch a movie or TV show within minutes.

I beat the game on normal difficulty this morning. The game in general was a blast. Not only is the gameplay great, but the story that goes along with it is awesome. The thing I love about the Uncharted series is how well both the gameplay and storytelling mesh together to create one wonder work of art.
I was going to write a review of the game, but theres no point. All I have to say about it is just buy it, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Its one of the best gaming experinces I have had in a long time, and I cant wait to play through it again to get the next trophy.

So I was thinking this morning as I played the Uncharted 2 demo for a bit. If they make an Uncharted movie (which I think is actually in the works somewhere), who would play Nathan Drake. But as I thought about it, a person came into my mind, and I said “he has the look and the wit…I think he would be good.” Im talking about Ryan Reynolds. Now I was not a fan of his portrayal of Deadpool in the Wolverine movie (well, I liked his Wade character, but I didnt like what the movie did to Deadpool in the end, but thats not really Reynold’s fault), but I like him in general. So below is a pic of Nathan Drake and a pic of Ryan Reynolds. I think its good chemistry.

Yup, this would work well, and I would be one happy pappy.

I wanted to see this movie since I first heard about it. I love Seth Rogen and think he’s pretty hilarious. However, I was kind of nervous because the premise of the movie sounded weird, and I tend to really hate Anna Faris. So I waited for the DVD release to rent the movie, so that I didn’t waste the cash in theater.
The movie is about Ronnie (Rogen), the head of mall security. He has a thing for the girl at the make-up counter (Faris), and is pretty much in love with her. One day a “pervert” begins harassing women outside the mall by flashing them and saying dirty things to them. Ronnie becomes obsessed with finding this guy and taking him down, and only gets more intense when Feris’ character is one of the girls who are flashed.

I rented this movie for several reasons. First, its about the Civil War, which I have recently gotten into. Secondly, it’s a video my teacher shows in his class, so I wanted to see it before its in the class. Third, it had an all-star cast, with Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Denzel Washington, and others. Lastly, Im a historical nerd and love history movies in general.
The movie is based on the true story of Robert Shaw (Broderick), who was a young Boston man who was commissioned to lead a regiment of African Americans during the Civil War. He spends over a year going through many hardships such as training a people he didn’t fully understand and working for a government who was prejudiced against the regiment. The regiment got no combat time and was under-supplied, not being given a uniform or even shoes.

Why did I rent this movie from Netflix? One reason…it is loosely based on the theme park of my childhood. Thats right. There is a real Adventureland, and its on Long Island, where I grew up. We went there many times a year…with family while my parents were at work, with friends for birthday parties and the like, and with groups like Boy Scouts. It was a great place, with some good rides and a great arcade. I especially loved these bumper boats they had. The best was that often they would run out of gasoline in the middle of play, so you would be just sitting there getting bumped, and when everyone else went back after the round, one of the attendents had to come out and drag you back. The haunted house was also pretty crazy, and I remember it being my Dad’s favorite as well. It was a great park, and I have lots of memories of it. But I digress.
The movie is about a guy who just graduates college. He has plans for a European summer vacation, and then to go to a high end grad school. All these hopes are smashed when his father receives a demotion at work, and his parents cannot afford to send him to either place. Thus, he takes it upon himself to get a summer job, and the only place he can get one is as an attendent at Adventureland (which is set in Pittsburgh for the movie for some reason.) Once there, he meets a girl he likes, but then the rest of the movie is filled with all sorts of drama, love triangles, and broken hearts aplenty.

Sure, its meant to be a kids movie. Its made by Disney, has some young kids getting into trouble. My real interest in it is from the star: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I have loved pretty much every movie Johnson ever did (aside from Scorpion King). He made a big leap from wrestling to the movies, and he did a damn good job. He has proven to be one of the best actors today, and he is one of the few who dont piss me off. Like Hogan, he moved from the squared circle to the professional film circuit, but unlike Hulk he did a damn good job, and is not as corny. So I rent the movie for him.
The movie is a remake of an older movie, and based on a book. Basically, some kids are being hunted by federal agents because they are not kids, but aliens from another planet. Johnson’s character is a taxi driver who picks them up (not knowing they are aliens since they look like normal kids) and the adventure is born as he helps them evade capture. The point of it all is to get to Witch Mountain, where the kids spaceship is being held at a secret underground military base, so that they can blast off back to their home planet.

So as many of you may know, I recently purchased my first smart phone (BlackBerry), so I had to prepare for the increased monthly bill to compensate for the internet usage and whatnot. My plan was to cancel my old phone’s insurance, drop down my text plan, and to cancel Gamefly, in order to kind of break even.
Well, I dropped the insurance and texting, but not Gamefly.
My Gamefly account renews on the 8th of each month. So on August 7th, I sadly went to Gamefly’s site to cancel my subscription. When I clicked “Im sure I want to cancel”, it took me to a new screen with an amazing offer. Basically, they said “Hey, give us another chance. We’ll only charge you $8.99″. I was paying $15.99, so this was a steal. I was tempted for mere seconds before giving in to the savings. Plus, I had not finished InFamous yet, and was sad that I was getting ready to send it back without beating it.
