Dungeon Hunter: Alliance Character Build: The Warrior

I’ve done a few character builds for Sacred 2, and I enjoyed sharing my thoughts on creating a strategic character who was well-built and used all of their skill points to the maximum advantage. While Dungeon Hunter: Alliance is nowhere near as complex as Sacred 2, there are still a lot of skills to choose from for each class. Granted, if you play to max out your character at level 75 you will have most of the skills by default, but this is a guide for someone who does not want to put as much time into their warrior, and won’t play past a single playthrough.

The Basics:

First off, some general info on the warrior. I think the warrior is best suited as a tank. Sure, he has some buff skills, but if you’re playing in co-op, it’s best to save the buffs for the mage, and let the warrior get down and dirty in the front lines. Unfortunately, it takes time for the warrior to become a “tank”, in that he can run to the front lines and hack up enemies while absorbing little damage. It took until about level 25, when I was getting decent armor stats on equipment, had a lot of attribute points in endurance, and had the Hardiness (increases your armor stat) skill maxed out. The good news is that it is ridiculously easy (and affordable) to reset your characters skills and attributes, so doing so every few levels, after some good skills have been unlocked, will be key. PSN Review: Dungeon Hunter: Alliance

Anyone who truly knows that my favorite genre of game is not FPS or wrestling or even RPGs…it’s the good ol’ genre of hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers! Nothing is better than sitting down, choosing a class, and then spending fifty or more hours grinding that character by killing endless streams of monsters over and over again while searching for more xp and loot. The PS2 had quite a few excellent games in this genre, but the PS3 has been relatively lacking…the best being Sacred 2. Then along came Dungeon Hunter: Alliance; a PSN-exclusive that really scratched my itch for a genre that has been severely under-represented in this generation of home consoles.

There is a basic story in the game. You play as a dead king who is resurrected by a fairy, who needs your help to stop your wife (the queen) from resurrecting a dark fairy who will destroy the world. There are three classes to choose from; warrior, rogue, and mage. As with most dungeon crawlers, each class depends on different stats (ex- warrior uses strength, rogue uses dexterity) and combat skills to take on the forces of evil. There are twelve acts, each one made up of a couple of different dungeons/maps that offer their own enemy type. While the lack of class choice is a tad disappointing (I compare most hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers to Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms), it works just fine for a $9 PSN title (the PS+ price, of course.)

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance: A Worthy Predecessor to Sacred 2

If anyone knows my gaming habits, they know I’m a sucker for the hack-and-slash/dungeon-crawler/RPG genre. Ever since getting the PS3 I’ve been itching for something that equaled the awesomeness of Champions of Norrath and Baldurs Gate on the PS2, but that has been a challenge. The closest game was Sacred 2, which is incredibly under-rated in my opinion, but I do acknowledge the limitations it had. There were a few other games that tried to squeeze into the genre, but just didn’t cut the mustard (Untold Legends didn’t have online voice chat and was otherwise mediocre, and the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series just didn’t have as much replay value as I would have liked.)

Then I started hearing about Dungeon Hunter: Alliance; a PSN-exclusive that enables up to four players to raid some dungeons. Being a PSN title, I was initially skeptical for the replay value, particularly in the number of maps and the max level. After reading co-optimus’ review on the game, my worries were tossed aside as there are over twelve levels and the character level cap is set to 75. So I jumped on the PSN and put my birthday money to good use, and had some time to check the game out. Read More »

Fourth Platinum Trophy: Dragon Age: Origins

Today I snagged my fourth Platinum trophy, from Dragon Age: Origins. It definitely takes some time, and requires three playthroughs. You get a silver trophy for getting each character class (warrior, mage, and rogue) to level 20. My first playthrough was with the warrior, and at the end of the game I was level 20. My mage ended at level 21, and my rogue ended up at level 22. So you basically have to finish the game with each character to get each of those trophies.

Secondly, one of the trickier trophies to get is the Perfectionist trophy, which you receive for unlocking all the endings in the game. From reading online, Ive heard people say there are two, three, and four endings. I got the trophy for three different endings. Heres what I did:

  • Recruit Loghain, perform the dark ritual with Morrigan and main character
  • Kill Loghain, have Alistar sacrifice himself to kill the Archdemon
  • Kill Loghain, sacrifice self to kill the Archdemon

Almost Platinumed Dragon Age: Origins

dragonage

I just finished up my second playthrough of Dragon Age: Origins with my mage. My first playthrough was with a warrior. I have 93% of the trophies for the game. The only ones I am missing (which will be snagged on my third playthrough with a rogue) are:

  • Perfectionist- There are three endings…one where you sacrifice yourself, one where a friend sacrifices himself, and a third where you perform a ritual to avoid sacrificing
  • Sacrilegious- Have to side with a cult in one of the main missions
  • Traveler- Go to every location in the game. Apparently I keep missing someplace since I havent gotten this trophy yet, so I will be using an online guide during my next playthrough to ensure I get it
  • Shadow- I have to get my rogue character to level 20
  • Ultimate Reward- The Platinum Trophy

I enjoyed playing as the mage a lot more than the warrior. In my first two playthroughs I played a “nice guy”, as I was trying to get relationships with the characters for the trophies. This next playthrough, Im gonna play as a badass rogue who is gonna kill first and ask questions later, which will piss off my party but be fun.

Easy Lover…Weirdest Trophy Ever?

So as I mentioned in my review of Dragon Age: Origins, one of the concepts of the game is relationships. Your main character, through conversation and giving gifts, can form sexual relationships with four different characters through the course of the game. Normally I wouldnt go through this much trouble, but there is a trophy for getting each character into bed the first time, and a trophy after getting all four. So thats five trophies at stake, and in my first playthrough I will get as many of them as I can.

So for the four characters, there are two female and two male. I assumed I would get the two female on my current playthrough (I am a male warrior right now) and I would snag the two men on a second playthrough with a female mage. Well, I come to find out that one of the male characters I have to seduce is, in fact, a gay elf. That being said, all I really had to do was strike up a few conversations, give him some gloves, and the next thing I knew I was in his tent…

So I got the bronze trophy for bedding him (titled Easy Lover…simply because he was the easiest to seduce for some reason), and all I have to say is that it was truly one of the weirdest (and most uncomfortable) trophies I ever got…

PS3 Review: Dragon Age: Origins

dragonage1

I sent Dragon Age Origins back to Gamefly today. I probably put about ten to twelve hours into it, and barely scratched the surface. Yet, from what I played, I know its a game that I HAVE to own. I was gunning to get Borderlands, but Dragon Age really blew me away, and I just have to have it as my next game. If I hadnt just bought MUA2, Uncharted 2, and WWE 2010 I would have been more inclined to keep it, but Ive been spending too much on games as it is. Regardless, it is safe to say that Dragon Age is the best RPG on the PS3 that I have played, and that says a lot based on how much I loved Sacred 2.

When you start a game, you create a new character by choosing the race, sex, and class. Then, you will select one of six “background stories” which introduce your character and the game. Which story you can choose depends on what kind of character you created. From there, you are thrust right into the game.

dragonage

I was waiting and waiting to get Fairytale Fights in from Gamefly, but they kept pushing the release date further and further back. Eventually it was pushed back so much that Dragon Age was now releasing before it, so I went for it. The PS3, in my opinion, is lacking in the RPG library, so I wanted to see how Dragon Age was. I had heard lots of good things, but for some reason I wasnt following the game closely, so I had no idea what to expect. I didnt know what kind of RPG it was, how leveling and combat was worked, etc. So when I popped the game in last night, I wasnt sure what to expect.

What from the about two hours I have played so far, I am very impressed and pleased with the game. There are six different stories to choose from, and which story quest you will follow for the game is based on the kind of character you create. There are three races (human, elf, dwarf), three classes (warrior, mage, rogue), and each race can be either male or female, so that makes a total of 18 different character combinations. Depending on which of the three you choose, there are either one or two stories to choose from. The stories are actually more like background information for your character, and give a general sense of where your character will go in the game.

For example, last night I made my first character. I didnt know how the game play or combat was, so I wanted to play it safe. Thus, I created a boring male human warrior. This choice unlocked one story for me, in which I was the son of some Lord. That was all well and good. I played for a bit, and got to see how the game play was, and enjoyed it. I saw that I would definitely be able to play as any character I wanted. So this morning I pop it in, and start up a whole new character. This one is a male elf rogue. Upon choosing him, two of the stories were unlocked…I  could either be a tribal forest elf, or a slave elf that eventually revolts because some king tries to rape my newfound wife. I decided to go with being a slave elf, since the background reminded me of Braveheart.
