On November 17, 2006, the PS3 was released here in the United States. I wanted one pretty badly back then but the price at the time was astronomical. I had went from the PS1 to the PS2, and I was intent on going for the PS3 once the price was right. And on November 8, 2008, the price was indeed right. I had $400 saved up and Wal-Mart had a promotion where if you bought the PS3 (which was $399.99 at the time) you got a $100 gift card. So I went to Wally World early that morning, waited on a line for over two hours, and eventually snagged my PS3. I’ve now had the PS3 for three years and I have to say I’ve really enjoyed it as a system. It introduced me to so many new features like online play, trophies, wireless controllers, affordable downloadable games and voice chat that I hadn’t experienced with the PS2 (no, I never played PC games).
Before the PS3, I only had a small handful of friends that I knew that played video games, and it was always a local co-op affair. With the PS3 I was able to play with people from anywhere and I made some new online friends. In my quest for finding co-op partners I happened across C0-Optimus which is a site dedicated to co-op games and meeting fellow co-op gamers. Now I never have a shortage of gaming buddies to hit up when I jump online for a co-op game.
Of course, the biggest part of the PS3 are the games. I will now regale you with tales of some of my favorite ones: Read More »

I’ve been on a gaming spree the past two days. With Batman: Arkham City coming in either today or tomorrow from Gamefly, I wanted to finish up my quest for the inFAMOUS 2 Platinum before it got here. So I put a good chunk of time into the game yesterday morning, afternoon, night, and then finished it up this morning. It was a lot of fun, and was one of my easier Platinums.
I took my time with my first playthrough, as a good guy, on easy. I did all the side quests, found every one of the 320ish blast shards scattered around the city, unlocked all the powers, played a bunch of the user-created missions, collected all the dead drops…I did it all. Since I played it on easy it was quite the cake walk, and I had a real blast running around and exploring the city stress-free. Oh, and back to blast shards…they are nowhere near as annoying in the first game. One of the last powers you can unlock is called “blast shard sense” and when you search for blast shards now the nearest one shows up on the map, regardless of how far away it is. So once I unlocked that I spent about two hours running back and forth through the city picking up the last few shards I had missed, but at least it was a sure-fire way to find them all painlessly. This is something I wish they had for the first inFAMOUS game… Read More »

First off, let me get this off my chest… inFAMOUS should have been Platinum #12. I picked it up for free from Sony’s “Welcome Back Program” and have 98% of the trophies. The only thing holding me back from the sweet, sweet Platinum is a stupid collectible trophy. Through the course of the game you can pick up items called blast shards that increase your power, and there is a trophy for finding them all. Problem is that they don’t appear on a map until your almost on top of them, and this kind of tracking system is near impossible in a sandbox game like inFAMOUS. So yeah, when I look at my trophy count for inFAMOUS that 98% just slaps me in the face.
Now inFAMOUS 2, that’s another story. When I traded in my fat console for a slim one, I ended up snagging the inFAMOUS 2 bundle. Luckily Sucker Punch learned from the first game and finding all the blast shards is no longer an issue. One of the last powers you can unlock in the game allows you to see the nearest blast shard, no matter how far away it is. After unlocking this I spent about two hours running across the city picking up every last one of those suckers, and that trophy is now out of the way. Read More »

I am only a few trophies away from “Platinum Paradise” in inFAMOUS. I had a little time to kill today so I dedicated it to finishing up the stunt list, which was a pain in the arse. I had some trouble with the “Have a Nice Fall” and “Right Back at Ya” stunts, but with a lot of patience I finished them all up and got the “Stunt Master” trophy.
The only trophies I have left are:
- Good Finish
- Hard Finish
- True Hero (just one upgrade away now)
- Good Sphere
- Rockhound
The top four trophies are all story-related, and I’ll be snagging them shortly, once I finish up my current campaign (I’m currently playing a good guy on hard difficulty.) Once I finish up the campaign, I’ll head back into the city and finish cleaning up the shard collections, which I’m sure will be a time-consuming process. I can’t that having to collect 350 shards is only worth a bronze trophy! You can count on me cheating a bit with an online guide for all those shards for sure! Once that’s done, I’ll be sitting pretty with my 12th platinum.

Today was Gamescom, which is some kind of video game thingy in Europe. Anywho, Sony used it to release some interesting information.
First and foremost is that not only is the PS3 getting a price cut, they are also introducing a slim model. This is cool because the current one is so freakin big and bulky. As far as the price goes, its about time. The PS3 default console will now be $299, a $100 price cut. This is essential, because for the longest time the PS3 was soooo much more expensive than the 360. Now the PS3 can compete more directly with the 360 as far as price goes.
They will also be revamping the XMB with a firmware patch which will be released on Sept. 1. Should make things like the friends list and trophies more user friendly and easier to view.
There was also some PSP news, which I didnt care as much about since I think the DS > PSP. However, one cool feature is that you can view comic books on the PSP now, which I think is pretty neat. I think that, to me, the PSP is kinda like a whole other console, in which you really have to put a lot of time into playing the games. As in, the games are pretty in-depth. The thing about the DS is that its casual, made for quick gaming on the go. I like the DS better than the PSP for this reason and others.
So there were some good reveals at Gamescom. Of course, they missed out on the most important: VOICE CHAT!!! To this day I still cannot believe that I cant be playing a single player game and chatting with someone else playing a different single player game. This is my biggest complaint with the PS3 to this day. I just want to be able to sit back and play inFamous one night while talking to Steve as he plays Ghostbusters. Is that so much to ask Sony? Is it???

So as many of you may know, I recently purchased my first smart phone (BlackBerry), so I had to prepare for the increased monthly bill to compensate for the internet usage and whatnot. My plan was to cancel my old phone’s insurance, drop down my text plan, and to cancel Gamefly, in order to kind of break even.
Well, I dropped the insurance and texting, but not Gamefly.
My Gamefly account renews on the 8th of each month. So on August 7th, I sadly went to Gamefly’s site to cancel my subscription. When I clicked “Im sure I want to cancel”, it took me to a new screen with an amazing offer. Basically, they said “Hey, give us another chance. We’ll only charge you $8.99″. I was paying $15.99, so this was a steal. I was tempted for mere seconds before giving in to the savings. Plus, I had not finished InFamous yet, and was sad that I was getting ready to send it back without beating it.

I completed my first run-through of InFamous last night, and shipped it back to Gamefly today. In the end, I was pleasantly surprised with the game. The fact that there is a good and evil storyline (with different side missions) really gives the game a need for a second run-through, not to mention there are about ten karma-specific trophies for each storyline, so you cannot get them all in one run-through. I ran through the game with the evil storyline, and had a blast. What was awesome was that as you get more evil, your appearance changes. I mentioned in a previous post that the color of the lightning changes depending on your karma. But your physical appearance also changes. As Cole gets more evil, he becomes pale, and gets some gnarly scars and other nonsense on him. In the end, his powers get a major boost, and it ends up looking like hes spraying out a symbiote (a la Carnage) rather than lightning. It was pretty bad ass.

The ending of the game was ridiculous. The final revelations and such really took me by surprise, and I had no idea this was going to happen. I am not going to get into it because it is such a great thing I would hate to spoil it. Also, the game ending hints at the possibility for a sequel, which would be really awesome!
So yeah, I had a blast playing through it. I got some ridiculous powers in the end, ranging from an awesome chain lightning attack (which I was hoping the game would have…makes me think of Sith…) and the ability to call down giant lightning bolts from the sky. The game was really great, and I enjoyed destroying cars, gas stations, and innocent bystanders. I definitely think the “evil” story is easier, due to the fact that collateral damage reinforces your evil karma. I think it would be tough for me to maintain positive karma when I’m accidentally killing civilians. I highly recommend checking this game out. Its been a great addition to the PS3, and I really look forward to it becoming a series rather than just one game.

InFamous is a great PS3 exclusive game, and definitely has enough to satisfy and turn some heads. InFamous is a free-roam game, so you follow story missions while also picking up side quests and finding collectibles. The game starts as the main character, Cole, is caught at the epicenter of an odd electrical explosion which takes out the island of Empire City. The fallout causes some of the residents to become diseased, and the government quarantines the city. As you progress through the game, Cole realizes that he can harness electricity, and conduct it from his body as a weapon. Aside from electricity, Cole also has increased strength (he can jump off buildings like the Hulk) and is agile enough to scale buildings and walk across telephone lines. Oh, and did I mention that he can also get “electric impressions” of dead people and see the future as well?! Yeah, hes got quite a few abilities. It is up to you to choose whether to use your new found powers for good by saving the city or for your own personal gain.
