Fantasy Hockey is Here!!!

This year’s Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey leagues are up and ready to go! I already registered my public team, and my live online draft will be tomorrow afternoon at 12:00pm. Here’s to another great season of fantasy hockey, which is how I keep up-to-date on all the players in the NHL, especially the players in the Western Conference which I no little about since I rarely watch them play the Rangers. I have been playing every year for the past four years now, and it really got me more into the sport than I ever was. It’s funny…I laugh at people who talk about their fantasy football and baseball leagues, yet here I am with a hockey one…I’m such a hypocrite!

Being in Florida on my honeymoon didn’t stop me from catching most of Game Six of the Stanley Cup finals, which ended up being the final game. I was very happy to be able to watch the last game and the Cup presentation, and was also pleased that Chicago won. The team has a lot of great young talent, and it was great to see these guys get acknowledged finally. Guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamos, and others kind of outshine the greats on this team, mainly Johnathan Toews and Patrick Kane. I was also happy to see Hossa finally hoist the Cup. He’s been after it for so long, and he has been to the finals a couple of times, but never won.

So this season is over. Next season is going to be the big one, and, as I already predicted, the Rangers will win it all, thanks to the “Call of Staal.”

Stanley Cup Schedule Finalized…I’ll be Missing Most of It

It’s official now…the 2009-2010 Stanley Cup Finals will be the Chicago Blackhawks vs. the Philadelphia Flyers. Now that they know who will be in it, the schedule is complete, and you can see it here. The first game starts this Friday, and the game 7 (if necessary) would be June 11.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be able to see any of the games due to the wedding and honeymoon, seeing how we will be down in Florida until the 12th. Even though the Rangers aren’t there, I still enjoy watching the Stanley Cup finals, and will miss it this year.

As for the team I’ll be silently rooting for, I think I’ll go with Chicago. Being a Rangers fan, I should have a pre-determined hatred for Phili, but I’m more busy hating on Pittsburgh…

Chicago Advances to Stanley Cup…Will They Face Phili?

The Chicago Blackhawks completed their sweep of the San Jose Sharks yesterday, making them the Western Conference champs and allowing them to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. I’m glad to see them do it, and I’ve been hoping to see them in the finals since the playoffs first started.

The question that remains is “who will they face”? In the Eastern Conference, Phili and Montreal are still playing, but the Flyers are leading the Habs 3-1 in the series. The next game is tonight, meaning that Phili can end it with a win and advance to the Stanley Cup. I personally didn’t see Phili getting this far, and after Washington was eliminated early on, I was rooting for Montreal. I would like to see them win, but for them to bounce back and win three more games is asking a lot.

So yeah, I think it’s going to be Chicago and Phili, and the sooner the better. I want to get the Stanley Cup going already so I can watch a few of the games before I leave on the honeymoon!

Crosby Faces Shattered Dreams, His Season Over

This year was finally the year that Cindy Crosby’s super ego was put in check, as the Montreal Canadians routed the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 to advance to the final round of the playoffs before the Stanley Cup. To make things even more delicious, the Penguins lost at the Mellon Arena, so not only did Crosby get a huge reality check at home, but so did all those ridiculous Crosby fans. Oh yeah, and Crosby finished the seven game series against Montreal with ONLY ONE GOAL! I’m sure he’s kicking himself for that one. Mr. Hockey indeed.

Crosby really needed this…he needed to see that he is not a hockey god, and that he is not unstoppable, and that he is not the greatest player in the NHL. I love the fact that his team lost, not because I necessarily hate the team, but because I hate him, the captain of the team. Man, I would love to see him right now, lying in bed with the lights off, trying to hide from the truth that he couldn’t make it to the end of the playoffs.

So the Rangers Season is at an End…

It was a fantastic game. The Philadelphia Flyers played a tough, gritty game against the New York Rangers. The Flyers had a ton of shots on goal, kept the puck in the Rangers zone, and were successful in breaking up many of the Rangers plays. However, with all that offense, they were unable to get more than one goal past Ranger’s goalie Lundqvist, which allowed the Rangers to hold on until the shootout. I had complete faith in Lundqvist, but after 60 minutes of having to work his butt off to keep the puck out of his goal, he was exhausted, and not in top form. The Flyers were able to come out above the Rangers in the shootout, thus getting themselves the last open invite to the 2009-2010 playoffs while sending the Rangers packing.

It was a sad moment when that game ended. Lundqvist had played his heart out, and kept the team’s playoff dreams alive far longer than they should have. Unfortunately, just because you have an outstanding goalie, if you can’t get a few goals to give him some breathing room, then you are going to lose games, and that’s just what happened Sunday afternoon. As I sat in my living room shaking my head in disbelief, watching the Rangers leave the ice for the last time this season, I still couldn’t exactly wrap my head around it. They had played so well to get to where they were…a few weeks ago it looked impossible for them to get to the playoffs, and then last night they were so close they could taste it. However, they had pulled themselves together, and in their last ten games (including last night) they had gone 7-1-2, which is extremely great. It’s just a shame that it all had to end…

On a side note, I am not really as upset as I could have been, simply because the Rangers would have been in the eighth seed if they won, meaning they would have played the first seed, which is the Washington Capitals. Now I love the Rangers, and think Lundqvist is the best goalie in the league, but I don’t think the team they have now would have been successful in besting Washington in a best of seven series. Personally, my money is on Washington getting to the Stanley Cup finals, and I will be rooting for them the rest of the season. I just hope they have the chance to roll over the Penguins and their precious Crosby along the way…

The Rangers played a good season, and I can’t wait til October when the pre-season starts up again!

Rangers Almost There

Rangers vs. Bruins

With two games left, the Rangers are in 9th place with 84, and not in the playoff picture. However, their last two games are both against Philadelphia, who are in 7th place with 86 points. If the Rangers are able to fend off Phili, then they will be able to snag themselves a spot into the playoffs.

I really started watching hockey five years ago, and when since I’ve watched, the Rangers have always made it to the playoffs. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…the Rangers team plays with great inconsistency. They will always start the season off great, then slump down, then pick up only to fall down again, and by the time the last ten games or so of the season roll around they are able to bust their hump and barely squeak into the playoffs. Despite the fact that they never get far in the playoffs, I’m happy that they got in there, and enjoy watching the playoff games, hoping beyond hope that maybe they can somehow pull through,

So here I am today, with two games left, hoping beyond hope that they pull out two wins against the Flyers and prepare for the post-season.

Top Reasons Why I Hate “Cindy” Crosby

So I’ve never made it a secret that I hate Crosby, as I have complained about him in the past. However, after my last post about him winning the gold medal, I realized he never made my Shit List. Well, I just remedied that. So in writing that last post, I really had a blast finding awesome images on Crosby online, and I decided to devote this post to the various reasons I hate him. Mind you, some of these images will be repetitive from past posts, but most will be new.

  • He’s a baby- probably my most-used pic of him. I just love his stupid little face as he is probably whining because someone just called him Cindy, or because someone pushed him a little too hard, and he skinned his widdle knee

But here is a new pic of him being a baby:

Canada Wins 2010 Olympic Hockey Gold Medal…Crosby’s Massive Ego Grows

There were only 24 seconds remaining in the third period. Team Canada was in the lead by 2-1, and they were certain that victory had been achieved. Suddenly, to the shock of all, Zach Parise comes out and nets himself the tie-breaking goal, allowing the game to move into overtime. It was something out of a movie, with a team coming back with seconds to spare, and tying the game up so that there would be a chance to win in overtime. Unfortunately, this would have been a messed-up movie, because the evil antagonist prevailed. He’s the guy you love to hate, ugly, arrogant, egotistical, over-rated…it’s Baby Crosby. And he was the one who scored the game-winning goal for Canada, making him a national hero.

cryingcrosby

While I was obviously rooting for the U.S. team to win, I would not have been upset if it had been anyone else but Crosby who scored the winning goal. I have nothing against team Canada, and I will attest to the skills of all the players. It’s just that I hate Crosby, and the fact that he is the reason Canada won is why I am taking this so hard. Crosby didn’t need this to inflate his ego any more…I’m in shock that his head didn’t explode when they placed the gold medal around his ugly neck.

He’s been an over-rated player for years. Sure, he has some skills, but people who say he is “the best in the NHL” are sorely mistaken. Also, as the above picture states, he is a big baby. He is always complaining about how the other teams attack him. Of course they are…being the “superstar” that you are makes you a target. He’s also not beneath taking a ridiculously over-the-top fall and hamming it up just to get his team a measly two-minute power play. So take his “legend”, and add the fact that he was the youngest captain in the NHL, was the youngest captain to win a Stanley Cup, and now throw a gold medal into the mix, and you have yourself one hell of an egotistical moron. If the above doesn’t prove it, then this magazine article will:

And hey, if you don’t see it yet, at least this guy does:

crosby-douche

I congratulate Canada for a great game, and a job well done. It was a really good game, and both teams were in excellent form. It’s just a shame that Canada owes more to its precious Baby Crosby than it did before today…

River Rats Sold- Leaving Albany

The Albany River Rats, which are an AHL team representing the Carolina Hurricanes, will be leaving after this season. The team was sold, and will be moved down to North Carolina. I am upset over this. I liked the idea of having an AHL team so close, especially since the Rangers are hours away in NYC.

While looking at the website, I saw that the current owner issued a statement saying that while this team was sold, they were looking into future AHL opportunities that could be brought in to Albany. Im hoping they find something, because I would love to have hockey continue to be played at the Times Union Center.

The S(t)uper Bowl

So today is Super Bowl Sunday, and I for one dont give a crap. I dont like football at all. Heres some of the reasons:

  • The game is too slow. There is a heck of a lot of down time, and it seems that there are waaaaaaaay too many commercial breaks.
  • The NFL season is lame. These guys get together to play a 16-game season, usually playing only one game a week. That is just pathetic. Also, there is just one final game, which is cheap. If a particular player has an off-night, or if someone makes one bad mistake (player or ref), that could taint the game. A best-of series is far superior to a one-time game, but of course a team that plays only 16 games in 17 weeks cannot be expected to play in a best-of series.
  • The NFL players are lazy. I will compare the NFL to the other three major sports in the US (NHL, NBA, and MLB.) In all three cases, hockey, basketball, and baseball players all play a heck of a lot more than football players do. What really irks me is that, for getting so little game time, they get paid a heck of a lot more than NBA and NHL players. Now, of course I understand its all about supply and demand, and that football brings in a hell of a lot more cash than hockey and basketball, but its still something I think is ridiculous.
  • People watch the Super Bowl because they “have to.” They act as if its the American pasttime, and that if you dont watch it, you are a terrorist. People who never watch more than five seconds of the regular season will be picking front-running with a team, and will go nuts if that team wins. However, their celebration is no more than a facade, made to impress actual football fans.
  • There is way too much gambling associated with the NFL. At one of my part time jobs, a bunch of the guys would professionally gamble on games. They were waiters, and all their tips went to their bets. If they lost, they would be pissed as hell for a week, and quite unpleasant. Also, all too often I would have to get one or more of them from the back when their “associates” would come in to collect. Now I know its their fault for doing that in the first place, but I never met anyone who would place bets on hockey or baseball games.

Rangers on a Rampage

Last season I would have been happy if the Rangers could score two or three goals in a game. So far this season they have been off to a great start, and tonight they crushed Toronto 7-2.

Initially I missed Renney when the Rangers replaced him with Tortorella. However, seeing how their coaching styles differ, I am now pleased with Tortorella. The Rangers play a much more aggressive game now, and thats something that is definitely contributing to more goals scored in a game.

Also, I think the additions of Gaborik and Prospal were awesome. Gaborik already has five goals in six games, and Prospal is racking in assists. Those two have been playing awesome together, and thats great. Too often the Rangers have snagged big-name stars who have been unable to really deliver (Naslund, Gomez, even Drury).

However, I will say this…I am still wary. Last season they dominated the Atlantic Division for a couple of months, but then lost their game, and in the end they has to scramble and struggle to get into the playoffs. So the Rangers are off to a good start with some great players, and Im just hoping this continues the remainder of the season.

NHL Season Starts Tonight!

Thats right…the 2009-2010 season is upon us tonight with the first few games. The Rangers play their first game tomorrow night, and whats pretty neat is that all 30 teams are playing games this Sunday.

Im excited for the start of the season. My fantasy league is all set as well, and just waiting for the puck to drop.

Good times, and should be a good year. And remember my prediction, the Rangers wont be winning the Cup this year, but next season will be their time to reclaim glory.

Brodeur’s Goal

Now I may not be a Devils fan, but I respect Brodeur as one of the top goalies in the NHL, past, present, and future. I just found this video on youtube of his only goal. Freakin great! I saw a goalie try for it two years ago, and while they cleared the ice and made it to the other side, they barely missed the net. Enjoy!

I thought the pre-season started tonight, but it actually started last night. I was sad to see they lost 2-1, even though its just the pre-season. Ive missed hockey these past few months.

Their next game is tonight, against Jersey. It starts in a few minutes so I’ll be catching that.

Heatley Finally Gets His Way

So Dany Heatley has been unhappy in Ottawa after the coaching change, and wants out. Ottawa had a trade set with him to go to Edmonton, but he declined it, and wanted something better. So for the last few months it has been frantic as Ottawa tried to get this demoralized and useless player out of their team before the training camp started up.

Well today Heatley got his wish. Ottawa reached a deal with San Jose, so Heatley will be playing for the Sharks while Cheechoo will be headed to the Senators. There were also some future draft pick wheelings and dealings associated with the trade. Im just happy he got his way so he can stop whining. No team should have to deal with a player who so publicly presents his desire to leave the team, and gives off nothing but negative energy. He was upset because the new coach didnt play him as much…maybe because he has been sucking for the past few years?! I mean, a couple of seasons ago, he was awesome. The first line of Heatley, Spezza, and Alferdson was one of the best in the NHL. They had great chemistry and were downright dangerous offensively on the ice. But Heatley is not that anymore. He doesnt play that well these days, and yet he expects to be given the same treatment he did when he was on fire? Forget that.

2009-2010 Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey

Yup, as some may know Im such a hockey fan that I actually participate in fantasy hockey leagues. Last year I went nuts and did four teams, which was stupid. This year Im doing just the one so far, and plan on sticking to it. My league had its draft tonight, and I totally forgot about it until it was a few hours over. I looked over my team, and Im actually pretty happy with what I ended up with.

I got two great goalies in the first two rounds (Lundqvist and Nabokov) which was pretty awesome. I learned the hard way that there are only a handful of decent goalies while there are plenty of skaters to choose from, so from now on Ive been spending my first two draft picks on goalies. The biggest mistake was that I somehow ended up with five defensemen and only two goalies though. I also ended up with a player that is currently not going to be playing this season. I also ended up with some a few weird choices.

So I just spent a few minutes doing some adds and drops, and Im hoping that I can get these changes made. The way it works is that all the teams (there are eight of us) have three days to make these changes, and then we take turns with our changes being accepted. So if I want to toss one of my players for another free player, but one of the other guys with a higher waiver adds the free player first, then my change will be cancelled because that player is no longer available.

Im hoping I get these changes through. I only really wanted to do three of them or so. I also ended up adding a few players who are awesome, but were given low rankings by yahoo! because they only played a handful of games, so their stats are lower than if they played a full season. I hope to get a superstar or two due to this.

PS3 Demo Review- NHL 2010

nhl2019

I havent played an NHL game since 08. NHL 09 I wasnt a fan of. I tried it on the PS2, and tried the PS3 demo, but I wasnt a fan of it, and never went further with it. I just stuck to 08 on my PS2 when I wanted to play hockey.

However, I have been looking forward to 2010. One of the biggest reasons I didnt like 09 was because it made a big move control wise. Rather than having one of the buttons assigned to shoot and pass and what not, the right analog was made to control shooting. I never got comfortable with it in the demo, and thus never had an interest to pursue it. In 2010 the right analog once again controls shooting and deking, and I am now ready to accept this fundamental change and get used to it.

Stanley Cup Final Most-Watched Show

1

Tagged as , , , , , , , , , ,

I just found an article which pretty much states that the Stanley Cup final (from last Friday night) was the most-watched show that night. Thats refreshing to hear. I really do wish hockey was more popular here in the U.S. Its such a pain in the ass to find anything NHL-related in stores, such as clothing and other stuff. And when you do find it, its expensive as heck. For example, my Rangers jersey is a plain blank jersey (no name or number on it), and it cost me something like $90. Now you can go to Wal-Mart and find MLB and NFL player jerseys (with the player’s name and number) for like $20-30. Plus there is always a sickening over-abundance of MLB and NFL t-shirts in stores. I wish I was a Yankees fan so that I could buy some new clothes…

Come on America. Hockey is the sport to watch. Its more exciting to watch hockey than to watch baseball and football. Plus hockey is the only sport where you can really “watch your buddy’s back” by being an enforcer. Fighting is expected and accepting in the NHL, as a way of keeping the other team in line. If a baseball player was to do that, he would miss like ten games and pay thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

So come on, wake up and smell the ice. Hockey is far more entertaining than any other pro-sport in America, hands down.

Rangers Will Win It Thanks to the “Call of Staal”

So one good thing came from Pittsburgh winning the Cup…it goes to prove that the Rangers will be winning the Cup within the next three years. Why do I make such a prediction? Let’s just say its the “Call of Staal.”

In 2005-2006 the Carolina Hurricanes won the Cup. One of their key players is Eric Staal, the eldest (and most skilled) Staal brother.

ericstaalcup

This year, in 2008-2009 the Pens won. Jordan Staal is one of their key players as well, and is the second-eldest son.

jordanstallcup

The third-eldest son also plays in the NHL. Marc Staal plays for who else, but the New York Rangers.

marcstaal2

So given this information, I believe there is a direct correlation between the Staals and the Stanley Cup. Seeing how there was a three-season between Eric and Jordan receiving the Cup, I believe there will be another three-year gap, after which Marc’s team will be snagging the Cup. So long as the Rangers hold onto Marc (which they should since he is a very solid defenseman), the boys in blue will be bringing the Cup home to NY in 2012. Good stuff.
