How I Spent My Christmas

Christmas Eve

For years, my family tradition was always the same: we went down to Long Island on Christmas Eve to see my extended family at either my grandparents’ or aunt’s house. We would spend the night at my grandparent’s, and then after breakfast we would jump in the car and drive back to my parents house for Christmas Day. Once Shell and I were dating, things soon changed, as we had to start dividing up time between the two families. Last year it happened that we spent Christmas with Shell’s mom down in South Carolina, so this year we remained up here. This year we decided to have Shell’s dad come up to our apartment for Christmas Eve, and then we would drive down to my parents house to see them and my sister for Christmas Day.

One of the reasons we made these plans was because Shell actually had to work Christmas Eve. So that morning, after she went to work, I ventured out to the local grocery store to pick up stuff for dinner that night, and for the next week. Price Chopper was a mad house, and plenty of people had the same idea as me apparently. After pushing though crowds and waiting on line, I made it back to the apartment in one piece. I then straightened up the house, prepared the guest bedroom, and then I had like five hours to kill before Shell and her dad got back. It was a weird Christmas Eve for me…most probably the least stressful one I ever had since we moved away from Long Island about fifteen years ago.  Read More »

New Years Eve Plans

Well, I still cant believe it, but tonight is the one-year anniversary of our engagement. I cant believe its been a whole year since I popped the question. Now that Christmas is over, the next few months are gonna fly by, and before I know it, the wedding will be here. Anywho, due to this, we decided to have a nice, quiet night together.

We made reservations at some Thai restaurant in Albany. The restaurant does not have a liquor license, which means we are bringing our own bottle of wine, which should be fun. Afterwards, we will be hitting up the movies. We’re not sure what we’re gonna see yet, it will depend on what time it is. What we do know is that we will either be seeing Avatar or Sherlock Holmes. I dont care which one, since I want to see both, and the other one we will just go see next week.

After the movie we will head home, get drunk, and hang out the rest of the night. If she gets drunk enough I hope to get some Rock Band in or something. Eventually we will settle down to watch the ball drop, and then its off to bed. Tomorrow morning we are leaving early to get to my parents house for lunch and to exchange Christmas gifts, and to stay overnight. Then Saturday we will do the same thing at Shell’s dads house, and we will head back up to Albany Sunday afternoon. Thats the plan for the weekend!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Years!

How I Spent My Christmas

So Christmas has come and gone. I enjoyed spending it down in South Carolina even though I did miss my family back in New York.

Christmas Eve was pretty busy. We ended up going out to a few shops. We had to pick up seafood and other groceries for Christmas dinner. We then had to brave the mall. My future mother-in-law apparently made some unwise Christmas purchases for me (including canary yellow dress shirts and a babyblue long sleeve shirt), and when Shell found out she made her exchange them at the mall for more practical styles and colors.

Christmas Plans

Tomorrow Shell and I hit the road for a 13-hour car trip down to Myrtle Beach, SC to visit her mom for Christmas. We will be leaving tomorrow night when Shell gets home from work, so we hope to be in Myrtle Beach by 7am or so. While Im sad that I wont be seeing my family on Christmas, it will be nice to have a stress-free holiday in which I am not running around like crazy on Christmas Eve and Christmas.

To prepare for the trip, I am right now loading up my iPod and DS to the max with music and games. I will also bring the Wii down with me for some family fun. Not only is the PS3 huge, but I dont think Shell will appreciate me playing that while Im down there…with the Wii she is more likely to play. Her presents are all wrapped, so thats good to go. Tomorrow Im just gonna get a holiday haircut (I always wait til the week or so before Christmas to get a nice cut) and start loading up the car and getting other things done while Shell is at work. Then once she is home we are off!

Merry Christmas to everyone who happens to read my blog! Im bringing my lappy down with me, but I dont know if I will be able to snag any internet service. We shall see…

Redecorating

So the past week Shell has been putting together our apartment with all the neat gifts she received at her shower. We got a heck of a lot of kitchen stuff. We got an awesome panini maker/griddle/waffle iron contraption that I am excited to use. Shell got a food processor so she can start making some great new incredible edibles. We also got a new pot set, which may not sound too exciting, but we definitely needed it since the old pot we had was loose, and the handle was on the verge of falling off. The most exciting thing we got was a set of four beer mugs, which Im looking forward to using for some frosty brewskis.

We also got a bunch of stuff to redecorate the bathroom. Initially I thought it was lame and didn’t really care about getting all these new towels, shower curtains, and other matching toiletry stuff. But the day Shell finished putting it all up and I walked in, I was pretty impressed with how awesome it looked.

Shell’s Shower Weekend

Shell had her shower this weekend. On Saturday morning we headed down to the surprise location, which ended up being at Torches in Newburgh. Once I got off exit 17 from I-87, I had her put on a blindfold I had picked up at Target and drove her the rest of way so she couldn’t see. I started telling her all sorts of stuff, about how I had to stop for a cow crossing and how I saw Bigfoot in the woods. As we neared the waterfront, there is a steep road going down to it. The road is still made of bricks like it was in the 1800s, so it was a bumpy ride. She was like “what are you doing?!” and I said “its some dirt road…I don’t know where we are going.” I had her convinced that the shower was at some barn or something. When we finally arrived I led her inside, said hi to all the ladies there, and then ran out so I could get to my parents house where the men (and bbq) were.

While the women were at the shower, some of their male counterparts were at my parents house with my Dad. I also invited Steve to come join us, and in this way most of my wedding party (except for Nick) were present. We had a huge lunch consisting of hot dogs, burgers, ribs, chicken, and all sorts of sides and snacks. My Mom had also listened to me, and there was plenty of Sam’s Oktoberfest to go around. Eventually the girls came back, and thus began the lengthy process of dragging all the shower gifts in, and then going through the inventorying and determining what was coming back to our apartment and what was staying behind for the time being.
