No more feeling guilty when you hand the video clerk a copy of “Disney Universe”
With my recent console dilemma I was stuck with PS3 games from Gamefly yet no PS3 to play them on. I only have a handful of games for the 360 so I wanted something new to play for a little bit to tide me over until Gamefly can send me a 360 game. Enter the Redbox. I had never used one before, and Netflix has always fulfilled our movie needs just fine. Now that Redbox offers games too I figured I would finally give the service a whirl.
In case you don’t know, Redbox is a giant vending machine located in certain grocery and pharmacy stores that dispenses movies and games. You select your title, slide your credit card through, and they pop the disc out for you to take home. You have until 9:00pm the next day to return it and only pay one day charge ($1.20 for movies, $2.00 for games). If you keep it longer it’s an additional days charge per day. The really neat thing I discovered is that you can go onto their website and see what each kiosk offers, as each one not only has a few different titles but you can also see which discs are available and which are currently being rented. You can even rent a disc off their website and have it reserved so you can pick it up later! Read More
With Halloween fast approaching, Shell and I got into the holiday spirit by popping on my Simpsons Treehouse of Horror DVD. I remember buying it for like $5 at Wal-Mart way back in the day and it’s an annual tradition to watch it at some point every October. Only problem is that it’s limited; it only contains four Treehouse of Horror episodes: V,VI, VII, and XII (which some from seasons 7, 8, 9 and 13.) It’s good and all, but the earlier Treehouse of Horror collections are missing, and some of those are great (“The Raven” and “The Monkey’s Paw” vignettes being two of my all-time favorites.)
So how to we fix this travesty? Simple…I would love to see FOX release something like “the complete Treehouse of Horror” collection. You know, all twenty-one episodes (that includes this seasons, which airs on Sunday) on four DVD discs. I would gladly pay $40 or whatever a new season costs, just to have all the Treehouse of Horror episodes in one collection. Otherwise I have to take out the first disc of every season (except the first season) and watch that individual episode separately. I’m a lazy guy and I have no desire to do that.
Would anyone else love to see this happen?
I’ve been a member of Netflix for…I don’t even know. I know I was using it before I started dating Shell, and that was almost eight years ago. I never really had a problem with them, except for that time they decided to delete profiles so you could no longer have friends and recommend movies to each other…that was a lame move! But this time, Netflix has gone too far.
I received a lovely e-mail from them yesterday indicating that, starting September 1, they were going to be changing their subscription options. I currently have the one DVD/unlimited streaming (with Blu-ray) for $11.99, which is probably too much to begin with, but once I got the HDTV I just had to watch a few Blu-rays to see the quality difference. Under their new plans, streaming and DVD plans will be separated, so in order to keep what I have I will have to subscribe to:
So my monthly payments will jump from $11.99 to $17.98 a month! They aren’t just raising the price by a dollar or two, but by six bucks a month! When you look at the annual breakdown, that’s $71 extra smackers a year. That is a HUGE difference!
With us moving to the Carolinas next month, we wanted to have one last garage sale to get rid of as much crud as possible. I had accumulated a lot of crap over the years and it really had no place in our new home. So I priced everything on the cheap and we headed down to Shell’s dad’s house to hold the garage sale in his neighborhood.
Saturday was a huge success, and we made more money and got rid of more crap than last year. It was cloudy and cold all day, but luckily it did not rain, so we had a steady flow of people coming in to check out our wares. Unfortunately, Sunday did not work out as well, due to the nasty, rainy weather all day. We had planned on having the garage sale from 8-1, but by 11:00 we had only had four people come by, and no one bought anything. We decided to close up shop and spent the rest of the day packing all our unsold goods up for donations to the Salvation Army and other organizations. Read More
I’ve been pretty busy the past two days, and that will only continue to the weekend. Yesterday I went down to my parent’s to help my Dad stack up some winter wood (ended up being two cords worth…which averages between 2000-4000lbs a cord depending on the wood. I also went shopping with my Dad and helped him pick out a new HDTV, and then went back to their house to install it. I also lugged some loot from our apartment and my parents house to Shell’s Dads house to prepare for tomorrow’s garage sale.
Today was a lot more prepping for the trip down to Shell’s Dads house. I also ended up doing the weekly grocery shopping this morning since we will be gone all weekend.
And tomorrow is the big day. We’ve been planning this garage sale for awhile now, and I’m looking forward to finally getting it over with. We have tons of junk to unload on whoever wants it, including plenty of DVDs, CDs, and even some of my old video games, not to mention a crud load of clothing and other stuff. It runs from 8-4, so by the end of the day I know I’m gonna be exhausted. We’re staying over her Dad’s tomorrow night also, and then heading home later in the day on Sunday.
All I know is that I miss my games!!!!!!!!
So just to bring everyone up to speed, I came back from the hotel the day after our wedding, opened our apartment door, and found a HDTV sitting in the living room, begging me to release it from its box. Steve, my best man, had snuck into my apartment the day of the wedding and planted the TV there as our wedding gift. So I finally have an HDTV! It’s a Samsung 40″ 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, and it’s wonderful. Let’s just say that soon after we got home, my father-in-law and I were busy getting it hooked up. I just couldn’t wait!
The picture is wonderful. Shell keeps saying that old movies in particular look like a “reality show”, in that movies that are like ten to twenty years old look like they were shot last year. And this is just DVDs…I can’t wait to try out some Blu-rays. Speaking of which, I went over to Netflix and we will now be receiving Blu-ray movies instead of DVDs. I’m really looking forward to really enjoying it! Read More
So Lost has come and gone, and the series is finished. I remember first borrowing Cara’s DVDs and once I popped them in, I was hooked. Over the summer I watched seasons one and two within a week, and was ready for season three once the show came back that fall. The show did such a great job in creating deep, rich characters, and you couldn’t help but love or hate them.
After watching the finale, I’m at a loss. The show didn’t really explain everything and spell it out for you. What I got out of it so far is that they all died in the plane crash. The island was a limbo/purgatory type place where they were given a chance to redeem themselves in a way. Many of them overcame their flaws and became good people, while others did not. In the end, I’m pretty sure they were successful in whatever they were meant to accomplish there, and were allowed to move on to the afterlife (being Heaven.) Read More
So Comedy Central officially announced today that they will be airing a new season of Futurama in June. The four movies that were made were decent, but not necessarily classic Futurama (with the exception of the first, Bender’s Big Score), but hopefully they will be more successful in creating 22-minute episodes. I have high hopes for the series. I really missed the show…it’s so under-appreciated.
Can’t wait til June!!!
I just got finished cataloging our movies, and we own 357. To me, that’s crazy. I had gotten rid of at least twenty movies since we moved in, mostly crap movies that I purchased impulsively from Wal-Mart’s $5 discount bin, but I am still amazed that we own so many. Mind you, this is our movie collection, not our DVD collection. Not included in this count are the various other DVDs we own, whether they are TV shows (Simpsons, Futurama, Sopranos, etc.), music specials, TV specials (all the Christmas specials), and others.
So I figured I would share our movie collection here. There is a lot, and it may not all be in perfect order, but I got tired from just removing our old movies and adding in the ones we have received since moving. Just remember, I do live with Shell, so you know that the nerdy sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are hers, and all the really, REALLY cool chick flicks like Footloose and Dirty Dancing are mine…
Im a pretty huge Simpsons fan. That being said, it is no secret that I have been unhappy with the show as of late, particularly with the notion that they released Season 20 before Season 13. But being the Simpsons fan that I am, I pre-ordered Season 20, got it in yesterday, and have gotten about half-way through.
Its hit and miss. Not all the episodes are junk, but none are great. Sadly, some are pure garbage and I shudder at having to watch them. There are few laughs, and even fewer that give me the sort of gladness that previous seasons did. The show is clearly on the decline from its blockbuster middle years.
However, my big beef came up today, when I watched the 450th episode. 450 is a lot of episodes, and it make sense that with all those episodes, they have reached their peak and are now on the decline. The 450th episode proves this. The episode was truly horrible, with Krusty’s show getting a “princess” character to draw in more girls. The premise itself was lame, and when it appeared that the episode would be the umpteenth “Krusty Komeback” episode, I died a little inside. However, what happened was even worse, with Krusty falling in love with this princess. Not even Ralph’s “I’m Star Wars” line saved this episode.
My biggest beef is that, for an episode they considered a milestone (450), it definitely did not feel like it. What they need to do is another “22 Short Stories About Springfield” episode…that was classic! Moral of the story is that I will most probably not be watching the show on Sundays, but being the sucker that I am I will continue to purchase the DVD sets, regardless of how lame the season is.
For the past two days Ive entered into yet another of my ebay crazes, in which I am in the selling zone. I currently have nine items up for auction, and will add some more over the next few days. Im selling some of my Family Guy DVD seasons, some old books, and tomorrow I’ll be tossing Shell’s old PS1 up there to see how much that will bring in.
SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!
Heres what I ended up getting for Christmas from everyone. It took me awhile to write this since I just saw my parents and future father-in-law this weekend…

So I went on amazon today to see when the next Simpsons season (13) was going to be released on DVD. While I did not find a listing for season 13, I did find a listing for season 20, which apparently comes out in January. If you’re too lazy to click the link and see for yourself, heres a pic of the box art:
All I can say is, what the hell is Fox smoking?! I have been patiently waiting to collect all the seasons. They were doing a good job initially, dishing out two seasons a year. Then they lost a year with the release of the Simpsons Movie, and since then have been slacking. And now they pull this load of crap…instead of releasing the next chronological season (being 13), they are skipping right ahead to 20. So why am I upset?

I rented this movie for several reasons. First, its about the Civil War, which I have recently gotten into. Secondly, it’s a video my teacher shows in his class, so I wanted to see it before its in the class. Third, it had an all-star cast, with Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Denzel Washington, and others. Lastly, Im a historical nerd and love history movies in general.
The movie is based on the true story of Robert Shaw (Broderick), who was a young Boston man who was commissioned to lead a regiment of African Americans during the Civil War. He spends over a year going through many hardships such as training a people he didn’t fully understand and working for a government who was prejudiced against the regiment. The regiment got no combat time and was under-supplied, not being given a uniform or even shoes.
The past few weeks Ive been home, Ive been watching all the Simpsons seasons on DVD. Today I got up to Season Five. Its really cool to look at where it started, and watch all these seasons in a row to see the changes made. A lot of progression was made. It was hilarious to see the difference in voice and appearance of all the characters (one of the funniest is Smithers getting a race change, and going from black to white…or yellow, in the Simpsons case.)
There are also technical changes. For example, in the early seasons the 742 Evergreen Terrace is the address of Snake, when he is a cattle rustler next door to Lovejoys house. Then by season five, 742 Evergreen Terrace is the Simpsons address, and has remained so since then. Also, in Season Two Hans Moleman’s name is Ralph Melish, then by Season Five it is officially Hans Moleman.
Man, its great to see the show get better and better. The show is great from the start at Season One, but really picks up with Seasons Three and Four, and by Five it is truly classic. Its been a blast going down memory lane watching all these episodes. I really love the show, and just wish that they would release the seasons faster.
So today was the day Simpsons Season 12 hit DVD shelves. In the past, I have ALWAYS bought it on release day, hurried home, and finished the season within 2-3 days. However, now that I am trying to spend less and whatnot, I decided to suffer and hold off until Christmas. I already made my parents promise they would get it, so at least I know I will receive it at some point.
Steve is another story. I knew he has bought all the seasons as well, and that he would be buying this one eventually. Since he works for BestBuy on the weekends, I figured he would wait until then. Now his birthday is next week, and I thought it would be cool to get him Simpsons for his birthday. However, since Im up here I cant see him for it, and he was going to be working before his birthday, so he could have bought it before I saw him. So I decided to pre-order it from amazon, so it would reach his house today, the day it hit shelves.
However, I did not count on him going to BestBuy on his lunch break today…
So as many of you may know, I recently purchased my first smart phone (BlackBerry), so I had to prepare for the increased monthly bill to compensate for the internet usage and whatnot. My plan was to cancel my old phone’s insurance, drop down my text plan, and to cancel Gamefly, in order to kind of break even.
Well, I dropped the insurance and texting, but not Gamefly.
My Gamefly account renews on the 8th of each month. So on August 7th, I sadly went to Gamefly’s site to cancel my subscription. When I clicked “Im sure I want to cancel”, it took me to a new screen with an amazing offer. Basically, they said “Hey, give us another chance. We’ll only charge you $8.99″. I was paying $15.99, so this was a steal. I was tempted for mere seconds before giving in to the savings. Plus, I had not finished InFamous yet, and was sad that I was getting ready to send it back without beating it.
Ive been wanting to see Fanboys since I first heard about it sometime last year, when it was in production. I had been waiting for it, but never saw it reach the theaters. Then last week, I saw it in Best Buys ad for its DVD release, and that movie jumped to the top of my Netflix queue. I got it in yesterday, and Shell and I watched it tonight.
The movie is set in 1998, six months before the theatrical release of Star Wars Episode I- The Phantom Menace. Basically, a bunch of Star Wars “fanboys” are eagerly awaiting the release, but then one of them becomes terminally ill, and will not be alive for the release. Thus, the friends decide to go on a cross-country road trip in which they plan to break into George Lucas’ house (Skywalker Ranch) and steal the rough copy of the movie, so their friend can see it before he dies. An insane amount of Star Wars humor and other wacky circumstances follow.
So since the movie is about Star Wars fanboys, there is obviously a crud load of Star Wars references, all of which are awesome. One of the greatest parts of the movie is that, since its set in 1998, there is no prequel jargon tainting the Star Wars universe, so all references are based around the original trilogy, which is very awesome. The friends have debates over whether Luke and Leia were incestuous, how cool Boba Fett is, and that Vader is a bad ass even though he has asthma. Also, the movie has the characters show an extreme hatred towards “Trekkies”, whos paths they cross at several points, always leading to hilarious results.
The movie is also full of great cameos. William Shattner plays himself, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher are on hand, Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are ridiculously awesome for their 30 seconds, but the best is Seth Rogan. Rogan plays three separate roles, and at one point two of these roles collide; one being the leader of the Trekkies, and the other being a die-hard Star Wars fan. One of the best parts of the movie is when Star Wars Rogan pulls his shirt off, revealing a tattoo of Jar-Jar Binks on his back, after which he says “Jar-Jar is going to be the shit.”
But the movie is funny even to the non-Star Wars initiate. Shell enjoyed the movie a lot, and Im sure she did not catch the inside Star Wars jokes and whatnot. Its hilarious whether you’re a sci-fi nerd or not. Just watching the antics of the five friends as they head cross country is genuinely awesome. While being funny, the movie also has a heart-warming touch at the end, in which we see the genorousity of Lucas (though Lucas himself makes no cameo).
So all in all, Fanboys was an awesome movie. Its a must-see for any Star Wars fan, sci-fi fan, and just for anyone who enjoys pointless, funny movies. Like I said, its a real trip seeing the friends relate to a Star Wars universe that had not yet been tainted by the prequels. I think the final scene of the movie says a lot too: the friends are at the theater for the theatrical release, and one of them turns to his friends and says, “But what if it sucks?”…after which the credits roll. Purely awesome. Definitely check it out.
