Why Do I Suck at FPS Games?

Its true, its true. One of the most popular genres on the market today are one of my least favorite. Not because they are not fun, but because I suck so badly at them. I love playing the single player campaigns on FPS’. I enjoyed shooting my way through the Medal of Honor series on the PS1 and PS2, and I rocked through the likes of Resistance, Bioshock, and Wolfenstein on my PS3.

However, my qualm is not with the single player campaigns. My problem is with multiplayer games, which is the meat of a FPS. I am really horrible at them. When I play against others online, Im lucky if I die less than ten times in a round and get one kill myself. I dont know what it is, but I dont have the proper training/skill to successfully play against others online. What got me thinking of all this was that I was playing the MAG Beta tonight, and I did so horribly. I seriously died eight times, and was lucky to get one kill.

The only FPS online game I ever really enjoyed was Resistance 2, but that was only the co-op missions, since you and a bunch of friends got together to take on the AI. The PS3 needs more FPS like that, where you can play through the campaign mode online, taking on the AI with other actual players. I really need to play these games more and get more experience…

When I lived at home, we would get together at least once a week for “game night”, where we would eat junk food, drink crazy energy drinks, and play PS3 and Wii until 1:00AM or later. Once I moved, it became harder to do. We play games online occasionally, but its difficult to find the time to meet up, and when we do the voice chat is sometimes buggy, and we waste a lot of gaming time getting situated. So when we do get to hang out in person and play, we play big time.

Last year we had something I called “Winter Fight Night”, where during my winter break I came down to visit, and we got our game on. I had printed up an excel list of games to play, and we kept track of who won what. Basically it was a night of competitive gaming. But we have always enjoyed playing co-op games more than competitive games.

Anywho, we have set a date for this year’s gaming night, and I am thus calling it “Winter Games ‘09”. He will be coming up on a Thursday and staying until Saturday, so that will give us basically three nights of gaming goodness. We haven’t played much at all online this Fall/Winter due to my hectic student teaching schedule and workload, but now that it will be over, we will be able to enjoy not only more online gaming, but can take time out to actually hang out and game in person. Im looking forward to getting my game on in the first time in a long time.

uncharted_2_final_box_art

Uncharted 2 comes out next week, but last week they released the online multi-player demo. I loved the first Uncharted, and enjoyed playing the Uncharted 2 beta a few months back, and Im really looking forward to Uncharted 2. In fact, my Gamefly queue is currently empty so that Uncharted 2 will ship on release day. But enough about the full game…this is about the demo for the online modes. The demo showcases seven different online modes. From what I could tell, two of them were co-op, and the other five were competitive. Steve and I met up and decided to rock through the co-op ones and see how they were.

I was pleased to find that the controls remained the same, as did the basic style of gameplay. Uncharted is not a FPS where you run around with a machine gun and blow everyone away…you really have to do a lot of duck and cover firing, meaning you will constantly be hiding behind objects, then firing off a couple of rounds, then hiding again. The health system is how a lot of FPS are going these days…as you get hit, the screen begins to turn red, and as you are near death it will turn gray. You can regen health by hiding somewhere and avoiding damage for a set period of time. The game looks and sounds amazing, with great graphics and voice overs. I cant wait to get into the single player campaign. Its gonna rock! But on to the demo!

PS3 Review: Wolfenstein

wolfensteincover1

So I just completed the single player campaign today. The story follows BJ Blazokwicz as he attempts to take out the Nazi’s plan to build a super weapon from another dimension. The game takes place in basically two areas; Midtown and Downtown. From those two areas, you interact with resistance fighters to accept missions, and then travel to a marker on the map to begin the mission. Along with interacting with them, you will also find black market dealers, who can sell you upgrades and ammunition for your weapons. Weapons range from tradition guns and grenades to advanced Nazi weapons like a proton gun (reminds me of Ghostbusters) and a large gun that disintegrates enemies.

As you travel through the city, you will run into Nazi squads which you will have to engage and take out. Also, you will be on the lookout for intellegince documents, gold, and hidden tomes. Both sections of the city have a set amount hidden throughout, as well as each mission. Finding these items not only will eventually land you a trophy, but you also collect money, which is used to purchase upgrades from the black market.

Punisher: No Mercy Co-Op

I met up with one of the guys from co-optimus this weekend to play through Punisher: No Mercy through the online co-op mode. It was much as I expected: it was the exact same as the single player story mode. However, this was not necessarily a good thing.

For starters, the first level in the story has the Punisher fighting alongside a A.I.-controlled Silver Sable. Thus, I expected that in a co-op mode, the second player would be Silver Sable. But no…I was shocked to find that player two becomes another Punisher. Dont get me wrong, I dont necessarily have a problem with that. Im just happy that there was some kind of co-op in the game, even though it made no sense. I mean, Silver Sable is actually THERE, so why have two Punishers when you could have one play as Sable.

Wii- Smarty Pants Review

I love this game. It is perfect for the Wii.

It is basically a trivia game for up to four players. You buzz in to answer questions by raising your Wiimote, and then you have a few seconds to choose the answer from a choice of four that appear on the screen. The question categories are pretty basic, ranging from Sports to Entertainment to Science. This game is a lot of fun, and makes a most excellent party game. One of my favorites to pop in with friends and family around. Also, players enter their age, so questions will be based around that.

I consider this game a must-have for the Wii. Its simple to play, and everyone loves trivia games. I highly recommend purchasing this game.

Wii- Mario Strikers Charged Review

I think its safe to say that Strikers my favorite game to play online. It was the first Wii game to have online play, and has remained the easiest one to connect and play with over the internet.

Strikers is a soccer game using characters from Super Mario Bros. You choose a team captain (a main character like Mario, Bowser, or Donkey Kong) and then three side kicks (such as Shy Guys, Hammer Bros, or Boo). You then run around the soccer field, throw power-ups and weapons around, and try to score a goal. Each character has their own special “super move” which has different effects.

As I already said, playing Strikers online is the best. Its sad to say that the first game to have WiFi playability is still the best. The other two main online games by Nintendo (Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros) all lack a good, solid WiFi setup. With Super Smash Bros, you can only play against someone who you have exchanged friend codes with, and with Mario Kart you can only race friends against other friends. So if you and a friend want to race, and none of your other friends are online, its going to be a 2-man race, which gets boring real fast.

So yeah, Strikers is my favorite game to play online. Its a lot of fun, and the controls are relatively easy to pick up on quickly. I for one highly recommend Strikers for playing on and offline.

Wii- Boom Blox Review

The first time Steve and I played this, we lost all track of time. It is a seriously awesome game.

Basically, you either throw balls at a tower of blocks to knock off certain ones, or you pull out certain blocks (kinda like Jenga). The multi-player mode is phenomenal. We spent 3 hours playing it and had no idea how much time had passed because it was so fun. There’s a bunch of different multi-player modes that include several different maps. Also, the game supports up to four players, making this a ridiculously awesome party game.

The single player mode is also amazing. There are a lot of different modes to play through, most having some sort of “story” about one of the Boom Blox animals, and you help them through the story. Also, as you play through single-player mode, you unlock pieces that you can use to create your own puzzles and maps in the create mode.

All in all, this game is most definitely worth checking out. This game is one of my top 5 Wii games!!!
