Book Review: American Front (The Great War, Book One)

I really enjoyed reading Harry Turtledove’s historical fiction novel, How Few Remain, and couldn’t wait to dive into the next part in the series. American Front continues the concept of a world where the Confederate States of America won the American Civil War, thus leaving the nation divided. How Few Remain dealt with a second Civil War between the United States and the Confederate States, which the Confederacy wins once again. American Front continues to follow these two countries into a more modern time, and how their relationship is with the start of the twentieth century.

American Front takes place during the the events of World War I. Austrian Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated and the European powers draw up their alliances, with Austria and Germany going to war with Britain and France. The big difference in this timeline deals with the United States. While historically the U.S. joined forces with the Allied Powers (Britain, France, and co.), this is not the case in Turtledove’s timeline. In the “Southern Victory” series, the British and French are allies with the Confederate States, while the U.S. builds up an alliance with Germany (this is seen during the second Civil War where the U.S. wages war against the Confederacy, British, and French.) So when World War I breaks out, the Confederacy (led by President Woodrow Wilson)  joins the Allied Powers, while the U.S. (led by Theodore Roosevelt) sides with the Central Powers. Soon enough the war hits home, as U.S. and C.S. forces clash at several different border points in North America. Read More »

How I Spent My Summer Vacation 2011

It’s been a bit too quiet on this blog lately, and that’s mostly because I was away last week on a family vacation. My parents rented a lake house in Virginia (in the town appropriately named “Bumpass“), and Shell, my sister, my bro-in-law and myself all joined them. It was a lot of fun and we all really enjoyed our time there. We did quite a few things too. Here’s a brief breakdown of what we did on our summer vacation at Lake Anna: Read More »

Book Review: The Guns of the South

The Place: Virginia

The Year: 1864

The Situation: Confederate General Robert E. Lee realizes that the North may very well win the Civil War.

Harry Turtledove’s The Guns of the South is an alternative history story, but also hinges on the side of sci-fi. In 1864 Lee is approached by a group of radicals who have traveled 150 years into the past to arm the Army of North Virginia with AK-47s, thus finally giving the Confederacy an advantage against the superior might of the United States. This change in fortune also changes history as we know it, as the Army of Northern Virginia is able to capture Washington D.C. and thus win the Civil War (which now becomes known as the Second American Revolution.) It sounded like a good deal, until Lee discovers that there is more to this group who call themselves “America Will Break.” Read More »

Book Review: How Few Remain

I recently discovered the wonders of Harry Turtledove’s works. Turtledove is clearly a master of alternative history, which can also be referred to as fictional history. Basically the author takes a key event that happened in history (called the point of divergence) and changes the outcome of that event, which then would have changed the course of history as we know it. While this is not a new theme in literary works, Turtledove’s novel, How Few Remain, definitely pits him as one of the best author’s to embrace the genre. How Few Remain is technically the first book in the “Southern Victory” timeline, though Turtledove never officially titled the series.

How Few Remain takes place in 1881 in a world where the Confederate States of America won the Civil War and maintained their independence from the United States. The point of divergence takes place in 1862; in reality, one of Lee’s officers drops details of the Army of Northern Virginia’s plans. These plans are recovered by Union soldiers, and the United States is able to take advantage of it and severely beat Lee’s army out of the North. In Turtledove’s world, these orders are indeed dropped, but are quickly recovered by another Confederate officer; thus the Union army never receives this information. This allows Lee’s army to continue North through Maryland and Pennsylvania, and eventually capture the city of Philadelphia. This major victory is enough in the eyes of Europe (particularly Britain and France) to recognize the independence of the CSA. With international support for the Confederacy, the United States has no choice but to call a cease fire and end the war, resulting in America being separated into the United States and the Confederate States. Book Review: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Here’s are some of the facts that I knew about Abraham Lincoln prior to reading Abraham Lincon: Vampire Hunter:

Here’s a list of facts that I didn’t know about Abraham Lincoln until I read the book:

  • His grandfather was ripped apart by a vampire
  • His mother was poisoned by a vampire
  • At the age of sixteen he killed his first vampire
  • He kept a journal which details his battles against vampires
  • He invented a “martyr” that would light up and burn the eyes of nearby vampires
  • He wanted to abolish slavery not for the rights of African Americans, nor to cripple the economy of the South during the Civil War. Instead, he wanted to stop Southern plantation owners from selling their elderly or otherwise useless slaves to vampires as a food source

Is what I said above true? Every dang word of it is! It all comes straight from the horse’s mouth as the book is based on Lincoln’s personal journal, in which he chronicled his entire vampire killer career. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter not only has direct quotes taken from Lincoln’s journal, as well as newspaper articles and other records from the time, but also uses a variety of illustrations from historical texts that further tell the tale of America’s foremost vampire hunter. Forget everything you thought you knew about “Honest Abe” as you get a fresh new look at his biography, as well as an eye-opening view of how America really was in the 1800s.

But now let’s get a bit more serious.

Getting Introduced to Turtledove’s “How Few Remain”

Last week I was close to finishing up the book I was currently reading, Starman, and I realized that I didn’t have anything lined up yet. So when I was at the mall and meandering around Borders, I came across a bunch of books by Harry Turtledove. I had never heard of the author, but when I Googled him on my Droid I was surprised that I never had before. Turtledove’s “thing” is to write “alternative history”. Basically he takes a key event that happened in history (called the point of divergence) and changes the outcome of that event, which then would have changed the course of history as we know it. For example, one series he wrote focuses on an alien invasion during WWII (“Worldwar Colonization”.) Another book series deals with Atlantis existing in the modern world, and another book series is based on some time traveling Confederate buffs who go back in time to help the South win the American Civil War.

The book series I decided to start with is titled “Southern Victory” and deals with an alternate history where the Confederacy wins the Civil War. I just got the first book in the series in from Amazon today, How Few Remain. I didn’t want to get too fictiony yet, so I wanted to avoid anything with aliens and magic. If I like the book I will definitely check out the rest in the series and see where I go from there. I’m looking forward to trying a new genre of fiction, and I have a feeling that I’ll enjoy this one. I’ll definitely give my impressions of it once I’m finished.

C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America

What would the nation be like if the Confederacy had won the Civil War? The mockumentary, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America, explores this notion in a film full of satire and “what ifs”. The film is presented from the point of view of a British crew who expose the true history of the Confederate States of America after the South won the “War of Northern Aggression.” According to the film, while some things remain the same, other key events that we know from American history are now changed and altered. The documentary gives a retelling of the CSAs history, and is broken up with commentary from citizens and politicians of the CSA, as well as television commercials that viewers in the CSA would see on a regular basis. Most of these events and ads are indeed racist, but in the CSA that term wouldn’t mean anything. Here’s a shortened history of the CSA, based on the mockumentary: Read More »

Plugging Along

Now that the bachelor party is over, it’s been a slow week thus far. Work has been lame, with work consisting of either mind-numbing boredom or intense madness. Today I was assigned the job of typing of people notes, which proved to be a difficult task. It’s quite hard to make sense of a person’s notes, especially when they are in-depth and quickly scribbled in no particular order.

I got to watch the second episode of America: The Story of Us. It was a pretty good episode devoted to the expansion and industrialization (to a degree) of America, which plant the seeds for the Civil War (which is next weeks episode, and I’m excited.) I loved the attention they gave to the Donner party and John Brown, though I was upset with the lack of Zebulon Pike. Still, it was good stuff indeed. I’ll definitely be picking up the DVD set at some point.

I finished reading The Hobbit today. I must have read that book over ten times throughout my life. It’s just such a simple, well-written fantasy story. Plus it’s relatively short, making it a quick read. I probably got through it within two weeks, and could only read at short intervals. I’m really hoping the new movie does the story more justice than the 70s cartoon movie did (though now I feel like watching it again…). Now I need something else to read. The only thing that makes sense is The Lord of the Rings, but that is such a huge undertaking…

Nothing else really going on. The weeks coming up will begin to get chock full of last minute wedding details and whatnot, so I’m definitely going to be taking any relaxation time where I can. I’m gonna try to get some gaming in tomorrow evening (around 6-7pm), and hopefully will be able to get my Resistance 2 co-op night on Friday.

Hope everyone else is running smoothly. Be good to your mother.

Bioshock 2 = Great Multiplayer Experience

Now I know that in the past Ive said that I hate playing FPS in online competitive matches. This is due to the fact that I tend to just really suck. I don’t have enough experience playing against other players, and that leads to me generally getting killed more than I kill others. Now I received Bioshock 2 when it came out, but I had not checked out the multiplayer mode since I hate playing online. But I was bored last night, so I decided to give it a whirl. I was not disappointed.

Between last night and today, I have logged in close to two hours online. I have definitely been doing well, and often come in within the top three places in the team-based deathmatches. Since I do fairly well, I enjoy playing it. There are a few traits to the online mode which I think are what attract me to it.

We are heading back down to Middletown this weekend (again). Today will be a chill day. While the women folk go shopping, the men will be sitting back watching Ken Burn’s The Civil War and the Jets game.

Tomorrow is the main reason we are going down, that being the tuxedo fitting. I am meeting up with Steve, my bro-in-law, cousins, and dads, and we are all getting our fittings at Men’s Wearhouse. After that, we will be headed to You You for some tastetacular munchies and cheap drinks. Huzzah!!!

Cara will be coming back with us tomorrow night, and will stay until Wednesday. She will regret it, as I force the PS3 and Wii upon her while Shell works. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow…I didnt realize its been a week since I last posted something. Things have been somewhat busy, so I have not really had the time (nor the motivation) to blog up about it.

Thanksgiving went well. We went to my parents house, and about twelve of us total gathered for a nice turkey dinner. After Thanksgiving, I started up my holiday shopping. Shell and I ended up hitting the mall on Black Friday (though much later…not in the morning) and started shopping. We dont necessarily go for the deals, but just to get into the shopping mood. While I got some small gifts at the mall, I did some major purchases from the comfort of my own home on Friday. I ended up purchasing my sister and my parents gifts off of amazon, as well as some other little things. They continued to have good deals through Monday, and I ended up buying at least one thing each day. So on Monday I received three packages, on Tuesday I received another three, and tonight I received one. I should be receiving one more tomorrow and two more on Friday. I bet the UPS guy hates me right now. But thats what happens when you have Amazon Prime…you just buy things one at a time!!!

Book Review- The Life of Billy Yank and The Life of Johnny Reb

lifebillyyank lifejohnnyreb

The have spent the last couple of weeks reading The Life of Billy Yank and The Life of Johnny Reb, both written by Bell Irvin Wiley. Both books focus on the life of the common soldiers of the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War. While it does discuss their actions in battle to a small extent, the majority of the books pertain to the soldiers lives outside of battle. I enjoyed reading both books, and will be writing my final paper comparing the two books for my AHIS 603 Civil War class.

I initially read Billy Yank because I had to give an oral presentation on a book about the Civil War. After reading Subdued by the Sword by James Grenier, I realized how interested I was in the life of the common soldier. I decided to read Billy Yank since my professor recommended it as being an essential book in getting to understand what the soldiers went through on a daily basis. I finished reading the book within three days, and really enjoyed it. Wiley uses letters and diary entries to paint a picture of how the soldiers spent their days, and I found it to be a very well written, fascinating read. After reading Billy Yank, I went out and purchased Johnny Reb so that I could read it as well.

Since the schools are closed tomorrow for Election Day, I dont have to go in. So Ive been thinking about my plans for tomorrow, and this is what I hope to accomplish:

  • Finish watching Season Nine of The Simpsons
  • Play SvR2010 (so long as it comes in on time)
  • Get my lessons finished for Wednesday
  • Start reading my Civil War book for class
  • Get a hair cut

That is what I hope to accomplish. Who knows what I will do. One thing is for sure though…the leisure activities will take precedent over the school ones!!!

How I Spent Columbus Day

I am proud to say that I pretty much accomplished nothing today, and love it!

I watched about a disc and a half of the Simpsons Season Nine. After that, I played Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 for awhile. I then finished up a book I had to read for my Civil War class. While doing this I was able to talk to Cara on the phone and chatted with Shell and Steve online.

Now Im just taking my time getting ready, because I have my Civil War class tonight. Even though the schools are closed, the college remains open…

PS3 Review: The History Channel: Civil War- Secret Missions

civilwarsecretmissions

I have been in a Civil War kick as of late, between classes, books, and documentaries. Also, I was in need of a quick game to pass the time between now and Uncharted 2 for Gamefly rentals. Both of these needs resulted in me renting History Channel Civil War: Secret Missions. Unfortunately, the game does nothing to bring one of the most epic wars (aside from WWII) to life.

In the game you start the game as a Confederate ranger, who is given special missions in which you have to sneak around Union forces and accomplish some goal. First off, the gameplay is all over the place, and does not follow a timeline of any sorts. The first level takes place in 1863, and then the next one is in 1861, so there is absolutely no continuity. Also, there is no story to connect the levels or anything else. Your character has no name, and simply navigates the level going to the next point of interest. While there is an excellent introduction to each level, telling you the date and battles, commanders, and whatnot, there is nothing throughout the level to reinforce your mission. Whats worse, the level will end abruptly and simply go to the stats screen. There is no information telling you that the mission is over, or a movie explaining what your actions resulted in, or anything. For all the work they put into the introduction of each level, I expected them to give similar attention to the remainder of the level, but they did not. This was a very disappointing aspect of the game.

How I Spent My Yom Kippor

So I was so excited for today, because both my high school and college were closed for the Jewish holiday. So what did I do with my day of rest?

Basically, I woke up at 6:45am, puttered around on the net, and then eventually started watching the Ken Burns Civil War documentary. I went through five of the eight episodes, which is almost six hours of content in the end. I am really enjoying the show. It does a great job in going through the Civil War. The one thing I really love about the Civil War is the fact that cameras were around by then, so there is a wealth of actual photos of the people, not just reenactments and paintings. The photos bring it together sooo much better, and its amazing to see an actual photo of Lee, Lincoln, and just the everyday soldiers. In between and during that I spent massive amounts of time talking to Cara and my parents on the phone, and to Shell and Steve on the internet.

I didnt play my PS3 today or anything, which was weird. I basically had the Civil War on until Shell got home from work, then we ate dinner and eventually settled down to watch Heroes. So yeah, thats how I spent my day. I think I have another day off coming up sometime in October, and hopefully I’ll accomplish a bit more.

The Waiting is the Hardest Part…

So I pretty much waited a whole week for Gamefly to ship me a game, but to no avail. I was unable to snag either Beatles Rockband or Batman: Arkham Asylum. Also, my goal was to snag Uncharted 2 when it comes out on October 13. So I wanted to have a game shipped out by today so I could check it out for a bit and send it back in time to have an open spot on Uncharted 2.

I looked over a few games, and eventually settled on The History Channel: Secret Missions of the Civil War. I have heard it was pretty bad, but I have been on a Civil War kick lately, so I figured its a game I could check out quickly and then send back without missing much.

I Love Yom Kippur!!!

Teachers have got it made. Im out of school by 2:30, I have the entire summer off, I get paid to be a nerd…and I get to take off for Jewish holidays! This Monday is Yom Kippur, and both the high school and the college are closed. SCORE!!!\

How do I plan on celebrating this oh most holy day? I do actually have a plan.

  • Finish up a paper from one of my summer classes
  • Platinum out Sacred 2
  • Get a bunch of trophies in MUA2
  • Read 1/2 the book I need to read for my history class
  • Start watching the Ken Burns Civil War special

Wow…I got a busy day planned. I dont know how much I’ll actually get done, but the only two I know I definitely am going to hit up are the first two. That paper should have been done in June, but when the professor told me I had until November to do it, well how could I resist? Im such a procrastinator. And as far as Sacred 2 goes, Im on the last part of the game. All I gotta do is climb up the mountain to the Windswept Fortress, take down the Inquisitor, and then defeat the Nameless Guardian four times. Then BAM! I get my platinum. Good stuff indeed.

Movie Review: Glory

I rented this movie for several reasons. First, its about the Civil War, which I have recently gotten into. Secondly, it’s a video my teacher shows in his class, so I wanted to see it before its in the class. Third, it had an all-star cast, with Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, Denzel Washington, and others. Lastly, Im a historical nerd and love history movies in general.

The movie is based on the true story of Robert Shaw (Broderick), who was a young Boston man who was commissioned to lead a regiment of African Americans during the Civil War. He spends over a year going through many hardships such as training a people he didn’t fully understand and working for a government who was prejudiced against the regiment. The regiment got no combat time and was under-supplied, not being given a uniform or even shoes.
