It’s been a bit too quiet on this blog lately, and that’s mostly because I was away last week on a family vacation. My parents rented a lake house in Virginia (in the town appropriately named “Bumpass“), and Shell, my sister, my bro-in-law and myself all joined them. It was a lot of fun and we all really enjoyed our time there. We did quite a few things too. Here’s a brief breakdown of what we did on our summer vacation at Lake Anna: Read More
When people think of New York food, they think of things like pizza and hot dogs. Point is, I doubt any really associates the Empire State with BBQ. That doesn’t stop a few restaurants that want to try their hand at it, and one of the best NY BBQ I have ever had came from Dinosaur BBQ. Shell came home from work tonight bearing the gift of Dinosaur, and I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth in.
I went for one of their great combination platters, after my sister highly recommend I try their sausage. So my dinner consisted of:
Even though my birthday was Friday, the true celebration kicked off yesterday (Saturday) as Shell and I made our way down to NYC for a day of subway rides, loud music, BBQ, and booze. For my birthday, I decided that I wanted to go down and see the American Idiot Broadway show before it closed (it closes next week on the 24th.) I love Green Day, and I loved the American Idiot album, so I really wanted to see the story behind the album on stage, because it’s hard to imagine what was going through Armstrong’s head when he wrote it.
So we left Albany early on Saturday morning and drove down to Poughkeepsie, where we caught a train into Grand Central. From there, thanks to the Droid and Google Maps, we were able to navigate to 44th street where the St. James Theater was. Before the show we stopped at The Playwright Tavern for a quick bite to eat. After lunch we headed over to the theater and prepared to enjoy the show. Read More
Today was the second annual Mac-n-Cheese Bowl in Albany. Quite a few (thirty to be exact) restaurants were present, and offered their version of the classic macaroni-n-cheese dish to be judged by the public. For a one-price ticket, you were given access to unlimited tastings of these delectable cheesy dishes. The event ended up being sold out, but luckily Shell and I had purchased tickets a few weeks back, so we were good to go.
There were many different kinds of M&C to try. My favorites had some kind of meat in them, whether it was beef check, pulled pork, buffalo chicken, or, my personal favorite, a birch-beer braised beef. There were also a few seafood ones which reminded me more of a pasta dish than M&C, so those I didn’t personally like as much. While they were tasty, they just weren’t M&C. There were also some really cheesy (in a good way) ones, and one in particular that was my second favorite was extremely cheesy. It contained a heck of a lot of provolone, and was filled with a few different types of Italian meats, like capocolla and prosciutto. Read More
Ever since spending two years at SUNY Oneonta, I have sworn by Brooks BBQ. It was a decent BBQ with a ridiculously sweet sauce, and I loved it. However, this has proven to be a temporary fling, as a new BBQ love has entered my life…Dinosaur BBQ. They opened a restaurant in Troy about a month or two ago, and Shell and I met for lunch there to give it a whirl. I can honestly say that my heart has been stolen by this saucy seductress that is Dinosaur BBQ.
Since it was lunch, I didn’t go all-out and snag the ribs, which I would have loved to do. Instead, I settled for the BBS sandwich, which is brisket, bacon, and swiss heaped onto a nice sandwich roll. Shell went for the pulled pork sandwich…Memphis style, which meant it was topped with coleslaw. Both sandwiches were ridiculously tasty. The sauce for Dinosaur is far superior to Brooks in terms of taste. While Brooks is overly sweet, Dinosaur has a slight spicy tang to it, which makes for a much more sophisticated BBQ sauce. I found out a few weeks ago that our apartment complex would allow us to own a grill if it was an electric one. Upon finding this out, we put one on our wedding registry, but didn’t receive it. So yesterday, after failing to find one in the stores, I ordered it off Amazon. I placed the order at 2:48pm, it was shipped by 6:34pm, and I received it today at 2:15pm. So I basically ordered a grill from Amazon, got free shipping, and had it delivered within under 24 hours of ordering it. Now that’s service!
So I spent under two hours assembling the grill. I’m not the most handy person in the world, and reading those instructions is sometimes a pain in the butt for me, but I stumbled through it, and I now have a beautiful grill to call my own. One of the things I have hated most about living in an apartment is that we weren’t allowed to have a grill, but this electric one, while not perfect, will go a long way in making me happier. I’m gonna break it in tonight with some grilled pork chops, and I’m going to make a apple chutney to go on top. Should be interesting indeed!
I had a blast this weekend at my bachelor party. As I said, I went into it not having any idea what we were up to. We ended up heading down to NYC for the weekend. We had a blast with plenty of good food, drinks, and friends. I headed down on Saturday with Steve and my cousin, then we met up with my brother-in-law for some afternoon drinks. Eventually we made it to an awesome BBQ place for dinner and met up with my high school friend. Later on my childhood friend from Long Island met up with us also, which was awesome.
One of the coolest things that happened was that we went to a comedy show at one point, and all of a sudden Jim Gaffigan comes on stage and starts doing stand-up. I turned to my friend and we’re both in shock, because it was this divey comedy place inside a childrens hospital or something, and he wasn’t even mentioned on the set list or anything. It was a hilarious surprise.
On Sunday Steve and I hit up some comic and video game stores, and then went and did a geocache in Central Park (I will post that separately.) After that, we headed home. It was a very fun weekend, and it was really nice outside (though I could say it was too hot for my taste.) I had a blast down there having drinks with my friends, and a good time was had by all.
I have been craving my chili all summer. However, I know better than that, because its kind of too hot during summer to eat chili. But I couldnt stand it anymore. So yesterday morning after Shell went to work, I headed off to Wal-Mart and picked up the ingredients I need to make chili. I then came home, popped everything into the crockpot, and let it do its thing.
As it was getting closer to Shell getting home, I realized we only had one piece of cornbread left! So in a desperate maneuver I ran to her recipe box, pulled out the one for cornbread, and proceeded to blindly attempt my first bread-baking ever. I can cook all kinds of stuff, but I never really tried baking, or making stuff with a batter. Needless to say, I was pretty nervous.
The chili and cornbread both came out excellent. My chili was as awesome as always…not too hot, but still a bit of a kick. The cornbread was awesome, and tasted just as if Shell made it. It was pretty tasty indeed.
It was a great weekend. The weather was perfect…no rain, not too hot, and a nice breeze to cool me down. Had a great time.
On Saturday Shell and me drove down to the Mohonk Mountain House and met my parents and sister there. The place had a nice 4th of July celebration thingy going on, so for a price you could go there for lunch and get to do some outdoorsy stuff.
We started off with a nice long hike into the wilderness. There are a ton of different hiking trails, and they all intersect at different points, so it was a bit confusing. The trails go through woods and caves, and there were a few different points of interest to check out. We also got to see some awesome wildlife. I got some pics of two fawns bedding on the ground in the woods, and my Dad was so excited to get to see his first raven. I also spotted a black snake, and I got a bit nervous when my Dad couldnt identify it. He is a pro at New York fauna and flora, and can identify pretty much anything. So when he didnt know what kind of snake it was, I snapped a quick pic and then backed away.
We also came across a lilypad-filled pond, which pictures do not do justice to. It was extremely colorful. There were also a bunch of bullfrogs you could hear but not see…they stayed pretty well hidden. As we left the pond, we came across an awesome-looking mushroom, and Shell just had to touch it. I then attempted to convince her it was poisonous and her finger would fall off, but I dont think it worked…
There was also this tower-thing at the top of a huge mountain. You could climb up it to the top observation deck, and there was quite a view. The wind was pretty strong up there, and kept blowing my Mom’s hair into an awesome comb over.
After the tower, we headed down to lunch. Lunch was the best part of the trip for me! They had a bunch of picnic tables set up outside, and after signing in you were able to help yourself to the buffet-type area. You started off alongside the grills, where cooks offered you burgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, and three types of sausage (I chose the kelbasa). They also ladled hot sides onto your plate, such as mac & cheese, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, and some other stuff. The cold salad bar was super stocked with all sorts of awesome stuff. There were plenty of salads and fresh veggies and fruits. I went a bit fruit-crazy, nabbing my first grapes and cherries of the season! Also had plenty to drink. Oh, and then came Cara’s favorite part…the dessert bar. They had about ten flavors of ice cream, a bunch of toppings, and then brownies, pies, cobbler, and other baked goods. We all ate like kings!!!
After that was done, we went for a short hike, then decided to check out the dock to see if we could rent a boat. Shell, Cara, and I ended up renting a paddle boat, and went paddling down the lake. It was hard work! Cara and me peddled, and Shell sat in the middle controlling the steering of the boat. We had a lot of fun. I was able to let my fingers drift in the water, and it was so warm! That was the highlight of the trip for Shell.
We got off the boat just in time to catch some weird parade. There were a lot of punk kids dressed in clown suits and other stuff, and they kept marching around. I think I saw the same people pass like three times. It was odd. We then headed to the hedge maze, which was pretty awesome. The five of us went in and quickly decided to go our separate ways. I think we all had the same idea to try and scare the others, except for Mom. She wised up to that pretty quick. I caught sight of her, and was stalking her from behind the hedge, waiting for an opening with which to strike. Suddenly, she bolted for the entrance and made her escape! She chickened out, knowing her children were plotting against her! So I ran back in looking for Shell and Cara. Eventually the three of us met up, and we began searching for the exit, when all of a sudden my Dad jumped out, scaring all three of us. I actually didnt realize that he had even come in initially, so I wasnt expecting it. We failed in finding the true exit, and ended up making a complete circle and ended up back at the entrance.
After that, we checked out the crafty gift shop inside the hotel, and then drove home. Once home, we hung out by the pool for a bit, and eventually I manned the grill and cooked up some chicken (regular and buffalo) and ribs. Mom also popped some corn on the cob down, and we had a very tasty dinner.
After dinner, we needed to plot out the plans for the nights fireworks. We had intended on going to Otisville, but it was canceled since the field was ruined due to all the rain. Instead, we opted to go to the Wallkill Golf Club. Shell, Cara, and I drove off to hit the club. On the way, we came across a bunch of people camped out on the side of the road, in front of some business. I realized that they must be able to see the fireworks from there, so we turned around, parked the car, and joined them. It was a smart move, as we were able to get out quickly later on, and didnt get bogged down in traffic at the actual club.
Anywho, we got there around 8pm, and found a nice spot on the grass. We spent the next hour ridiculing the other people around us (including the really annoying couple in front of us, in which the woman was like 10 years old and the old people behind us. There was also this ridiculous little girl who was running around to the other little girls, trying to join their families. Eventually the ice cream man came, but it was pretty chilly out, so ice cream was out. Around 9pm it got a little darker, and the bugs came out. I got a few mosquito bites on me from that. The fireworks didnt start until almost 9:30, but it was worth the wait. It was an awesome display, with all sorts of large, cool fireworks. There were these annoying little kids behind us who tried to guess what each firework explosion in the sky looked like. Some of the answers included: “George Lopez!“, “(one of the) Jonas brothers, “Michael Jackson’s car!”, and, my personal favorite, “The Mississippi River!”. Once it was over, we were able to get out rather quickly and headed home.
The rest of the night died down quickly. We had some watermelon and ice cream, and eventually went to bed exhausted at 11:30ish.
All in all, it was a great day. I really had a great time with the family. My only regret was that my bro-in-law Nick wasnt there. I know he would have appreciated the awesome lunch spread we got at the place. Plus if he was there, I may have been able to sneak the Wii down for some nighttime gaming.
Needless to say, it was a very great time, and it was how I would always want my Fourth of July to be…grilling food, being outdoors, and finishing the day with a nice fireworks display.
Hope everyone else had a great and safe day as well!
We are spending our Independence Day at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz. There will be plenty of outdoorsy activities to partake in, as well as a sweet BBQ lunch. Im excited.
Happy Independence Day everyone!!! Stay safe.
Now I know Im a day early, but I will be out hiking and BBQ’ing with the family tomorrow, and will thus be unable to do this, so I am writing this up now.
July 4th, or Independence Day, is a great day in the history of the United States, mainly because it is attributed to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. What is funny, however, is that the founding fathers had originally approved the document on July 2nd. John Adams even wrote a letter to his wife saying :
“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more”.
Being an ameture historian, with a background in early American history, I hold Independence Day to be my second favorite holiday (trumped only by the commercialization of Christmas). I love the idea of being outdoors, holding a burger in one hand and a beer in the other, reflecting on how far this nation has come. Within the course of 233 years, America today is truly one of the greatest, most powerful nations. Over the course of this time, we have seen the coming and going of 44 Presidents, and each time, the transition of power has been peaceful and routine. Of course, I dont count assasinations, which are violent events, but I refer to the fact that the nation never faltered, never stopped, and that the government, even though it is constantly changing as each new President brings in a new cabinet and staff, it has always been done in a peaceful manner. I dont know how many other nations can boast that.
The international neighborhood can say what it will, but I believe that America is the most powerful and well-respected nation in the global community. The U.S. has done a lot for the world since it first came to power. America fought against piracy in Africa while Europeans were paying them bribes and taking the easy way out. U.S. forces stormed across Europe twice to help end the military conflicts going on there. During the Cold War, the U.S. became the supreme technological nation worldwide. The U.S. has also delivered tons of aid to nations in need across the globe.
So what am I saying? Am I saying that the United States is the best damn country in the world? Hell yeah I am. I am most definitely a nationalist, but just because I have these beliefs does not mean I am putting down anyone else. I embrace the international community, simply because only an organized, unified world will be successful in repelling the inevitable alien force that will one day threaten our planet.
So this Fourth of July, while on your back porch enjoying the food and fireworks, take some time to reflect on who you are. You are an American, a proud member of a great nation. Remember those who sacrificed their lives from the American Revolution through today in Iraq and Afghanistan, to help maintain the safety of this nation and its citizens.
Thank you founding fathers, and particularly Mr. George Washington, who endured much ridicule, torment, and tempation to lay down the foundation for this great nation.
Heading down to the rents for Father’s Day. No PS3 or Wii for me, but I’ll have my trusty DS!!!
Happy Daddy’s Day to all the daddys out there!
Is this a dream come true, or some hellish nightmare?! I mean, seriously, Im excited, yet nervous, about eating a potato chip that tastes like ribs. I understand BBQ potato chips (even though Im not a fan), but I cant see the “rib” part of it. Does the chip taste like a meaty morsel? Or is it a pukish freak of nature, an abomination to all chip-kind? I dont know. I would like to know.
