Resistance 3 is Out, Dead Island Sneaks In

Believe it or not, after thinking about my choices and talking with friends, I’ve decided to scrap my pre-order of Resistance 3, and instead go for Dead Island. That may be shocking to hear, seeing how I spent so much time talking about Resistance and I’ve barely said two peeps about Dead Island. But in the end, it came down to replay value, and Dead Island will give me more game for my money than Resistance 3 will.

Resistance 3 offers a campaign that can be played either solo or with a friend, as well as a couple of the usual competitive multiplayer modes. That’s right…the awesome eight player co-op mode from Resistance 2 has been scratched. Now everyone should know by now that I’m not a fan of the multiplayer scene (because I suck), so I won’t be touching that at all. That just leaves a campaign, and it’s probably not too time consuming at all. So all in all, I’ll probably go through two playthroughs at most and then be done with it. Then it will just sit around, collect dust, and eventually be traded in for less than half of what I paid for it.

Then there’s Dead Island. Read More »

Book Review: Resistance: A Hole in the Sky

Note: Contains spoilers about Resistance 2 and Resistance 3

William C. Dietz is at it again, writing another “prequel” to a Resistance game. I had previously reviewed his book Resistance: Gathering Storm, which was a prequel to Resistance 2. It was supposed to bridge the gap between the video games Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, but instead it was just a poor attempt at building up the character that is Nathan Hale. Dietz  never addressed the burning question of how the Chimera went from being beaten back in England (how Fall of Man ends) to having conquered not only England but the United States as well (which is how Resistance 2 opens.) A Hole in the Sky is Dietz’s attempt at a prequel to the upcoming game Resistance 3, where the main character is no longer Hale but Joseph Capelli. The problem with fully reviewing the book is that Resistance 3 does not release until September 6th, so until I play the game I cannot say if this game acts as a true prequel. However, from what I’ve read, Dietz has stepped up his game and has answered the biggest question I had…how did Capelli go from the huge muscle-man from Resistance 2 to this scrawny dude in Resistance 3.

Dreaming of Resistance

Now I know I usually talk about Shell’s dreams/sleep talking on here, but this time I actually experienced my own personal dream with you. I just had a dream about going on a job hunt, but it was set during either Resistance 2 or Resistance 3.

Basically I went to follow up on a job application I had submitted to this museum and ended up having to fight this giant 50ft Grim outside. It was pretty awesome…I had a Marksman and I vividly remember firing off the little electrical drone and then shooting the three-bullet volleys at him, and there were guys behind me with Laarks. This giant Grim was really weird though. It didn’t really move around, and all it did was stretch out one arm at a time to try and grab me…kind of like that “Squeeze” guy on the first season of the X-Files. Anywho, I killed it and then went inside to inquire about the job I had applied for.

I think I had this dream based on the fact that I am currently still looking for a job, and that I just finished playing through Resistance 2 and am now reading the book “Resistance: A Hole in the Sky”.

Yes, that time of the year is on hand again…the prime time for new video game releases. Usually there are one or two games I consider “must-haves” each year, but this particular year is unusually chock full of great new releases. In fact, all the games that I will be wanting to snag early on are sequels to some of my most beloved franchises, which make things extra hard. What makes things super extra hard is that all these new games are coming out, and I have no income to pick them up! The titles I’ve got my eye on this year are:

  • Resistance 3
  • House of the Dead: Overkill- Extended Cut
  • Uncharted 3
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • WWE ’12

As you can see, every one of those games are sequels to some hard-hitting franchises, so I already know what to expect from each via playing their predecessors. So what’s a poor gamer to do with all these great games just begging to be purchased and played? Why, trade in your old games of course! Read More »

Upcoming TV Show “Terra Nova” has Dinosaurs…and My Interest

I was watching FOX’s lineup of American Dad and Simpsons last night and caught the teaser for FOX’s new show this Fall: Terra Nova. This was the first I’ve heard of it, but the images of people walking amongst dinosaurs in cages not only made me think immediately of Jurassic Park, but also got me off the couch and onto the interwebs to find out more about this mysterious show. What I’ve read gives the show an interesting, unique premise, but these shows always have the potential to be corny and underwhelming.

From what I’ve gathered, something happens in the 2100′s that makes Earth unlivable for humans. So what do the scientists of the 22nd century propose? Find a solution to the problem on Earth? Build some rocket ships and colonize the Moon or other planets? Just give up and die? Read More »

Book Review: A Dance with Dragons

I finished A Feast for Crows almost a year ago (I reviewed the book on August 29, 2010), so I had to wait almost a year to continue the story with book five in the “Song of Ice and Fire” series, A Dance with Dragons. It was definitely worth the wait and I couldn’t wait to get back with the characters missing from A Feast for Crows to see what they have been doing.

It’s kind of hard to review a book that is part of a series. It’s difficult to say “well the second book is way better than the fifth”, and it’s easier to take a solid look at the entire series. A Dance with Dragons does not fail to disappoint, and Martin has devoted the same detail and passion that were present in the other books. This chapter of the saga deals mostly with Daenerys and her dragons (which are finally beginning to grow up) as well as Jon Snow, “King” Stannis, and the other characters who happen to be at The Wall. Tyrion also returns, as well as some other characters who were briefly introduced in other works. As in the other works, there are also new characters introduced and focused on, while old favorites who appeared immortal or untouchable are utterly destroyed, either politically or physically.  Read More »

My Second UFO Sighting: Myrtle Beach, SC

In case you haven’t gotten it yet, I’m quite the believer when it comes to the unexplainable. For example, I believe that there is a creature roaming the North American forests that is referred to as “Bigfoot”, even though I have never had any first-hand encounters of any kind. I do believe in ghosts/spirits after my own personal encounter in the family vacation home in upstate NY. I also believe in aliens, as in life on other planets. I won’t go so far as to say there are definitely military cover-ups, or that people are abducted, but I do think it is naive for humans to believe that they are the sole lifeforce in what has become an increasingly unfathomable expanse of existence. Plus the fact that I have seen unexplainable things also bolsters my personal views on aliens and UFOs.

My first sighting happened many years ago. I know that it was at my parent’s current house, and that I was in middle school, so that means it must have been during 8th grade in 1995. My dad and I happened to be standing by the living room window looking out, possibly at a deer or some other animal…I don’t remember why we were both looking. But I do remember all of a sudden these two white lights appeared in the sky and began moving sporadically around. It definitely wasn’t a known aircraft due to the insane maneuverability, and the house was far away from bigger towns/cities, so it was definitely not something attributed to that. To this day I still believe I saw a UFO that day, and I know my Dad believed the same thing then. If he still does, or even remembers the incident, is unknown, but I definitely think I’ll be giving him a call tomorrow to ask. Read More »

Gearing Up for Resistance 3 by Going Trophy Hunting in Resistance 2

I’m a huge fan of the Resistance series on the PS3, and played the heck out of both games…especially the co-op missions in Resistance 2. With Resistance 3 less than a month away (comes out September 6th) I decided to trade a few games in to Amazon so I could use the credit to pre-order the brand-spanking new game and have it in my hands on release day. But it is a month away, so what am I to do in the mean time?

I decided to revisit Resistance 2 for two reasons. First, I wanted to re-immerse myself in the game’s campaign mode, and have begun working my way through that. Secondly, I’m on a trophy quest to snag a bunch of missing trophies! I picked up most of the ones I was missing between yesterday and today, so now I only have a couple left. Unfortunately, most of those missing ones are for the competitive modes, and I’m just not a fan of those! The last few trophies separating me from Platinum Paradise are: Read More »

How I Spent My Summer Vacation 2011

It’s been a bit too quiet on this blog lately, and that’s mostly because I was away last week on a family vacation. My parents rented a lake house in Virginia (in the town appropriately named “Bumpass“), and Shell, my sister, my bro-in-law and myself all joined them. It was a lot of fun and we all really enjoyed our time there. We did quite a few things too. Here’s a brief breakdown of what we did on our summer vacation at Lake Anna: Read More »
