First SvR 2011 Co-Op Storyline Almost Complete

With crazysteve coming to up to visit next weekend, I have been hard at work creating a story for us to play through in Smackdown vs. Raw 2011. The Story Creation mode is pretty sweet, as you can not only set up a bunch of matches for each week (for as long as you want), but you can also add in the crazy storylines to give it that hilarious wrestling feel. You want a car exploding? You can do that. You want some guy to get jumped by a bunch of others wielding chairs and brooms? You can do that. You want to have you and your best friend fight over some scantly-clad chick? Yes, you can do that too (perv).

The best part of their story creation mode this year is that I can make massive storylines that support up to six players at a time. Since it’s just Steve and I, my current story is a combination of different tag team matches. This is why the SvR series is the best co-op gaming series: I’m practically making my own game, personally customized and tailored to my friends and my own tastes. You can add in your own dialogue/smack talk, so there is plenty of room for inside jokes that will have your friends laughing it up, and to make it even better, they can take control of their own personal wrestler.

I’ll most definitely work on more as time goes on, but I am just polishing up this current one. Once we have played through it, I’ll write up another post detailing exactly what my friend and I experienced in our own custom WWE storyline! I don’t want to give away any details so I don’t ruin Steve’s surprise, but I will say that I created a short month-long story which encompasses four regular weeks and ends with a Pay Per View main event.

Amazon Delivers Borderlands Lickity Split

I had some Amazon credit from previous trade ins, and I also had a $10 credit for pre-ordering WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011. I had planned on ordering Borderlands GOTY edition (for the PS3) within a few days, since Amazon usually takes about 48 hours to credit the pre-order bonus. But I guess someone at Amazon is sure drinking their caffeinated beverage of choice or something, because I received Borderlands in under 24 hours of ordering it.

I got the e-mail yesterday afternoon informing me that my $10 pre-order bonus was applied to my account. After dinner last night, at around 6:00pm, I came into the computer room and purchased Borderlands with all my credits. Then at 7:00pm I got the e-mail saying that my order had shipped. I was pretty impressed by that one hour between processing the order and shipping it out. Still, since it was later last night, I didn’t expect to get the game until tomorrow.

But sure enough, at 5:10 this evening, the UPS man dropped off a package for me, and I knew it was Borderlands. So in under 24 hours Amazon had taken my order, processed it, shipped it, and delivered. That’s pretty impressive, and one of the many reasons I love doing my shopping through Amazon.

As a side note, I am now overwhelmed with games, having Fallout: New Vegas in from Gamefly, and now owning SvR 2011 and Borderlands. Needless to say I don’t see myself really wanting any games until Christmas, where I hope to get NHL 11 and Rock Band 3. Then I’ll be one happy pappy.

PS3 Review: WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011

I got SvR 2011 in from Amazon last night, and after the first twenty four hours of ownership, I’d like to share my impressions of the game. This isn’t a true review, but more like a laundry list of my likes and dislikes, as well as plenty of my own personal pics, since I get tired of having to scour the interwebs for pics of the game.Though as a side note, since I took these pics from my TV with my camera, the quality is not 100% awesome, as the rest of the game actually looks. A second side note, as always, is that I do not watch WWE programming…I am simply a fan of the games, and view them as the best fighting and co-op games ever made.

My Likes

For me, the most important part of any WWE game is the ability to “create-a-wrestler”, which will henceforth be called CAWs. CAWs are the backbone of the SvR games, since this is where every fan of either WWE or just fighting games in general can come and create their own custom character. This year’s edition is no different, with plenty of customization options for you and your friends to create. Ever since owning WWF War Zone back in the 90s on my PS1, I have always made a “BigBadBob” character to represent myself, and this year is no different.

I was laying next to Shell on the couch playing Smackdown vs. Raw 2011. All of a sudden she starting moving about, and then started punching the couch numerous times, as if she was frustrated. I said:

“What’s wrong?”

She continued to punch the couch.

“Are you hot?”

“Mmmm.”

“Yeah, it’s a bit warm tonight. Here, take this silly blanket off so you can cool down.”

I took the blanket off her.

“Just kill me!”

“What?”

“Just kill me. In the game. You know I’m not that good anyway. I’ll just die.”

“OK babe.”

She then went back to sleep.

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw In My House 2011

The UPS man just drove off into the sunset after leaving a brand spanking new copy of Smackdown vs. Raw 2011 on my doorstep. I’ve been itching to get my hands on this and start the onslaught of CAWs. I will definitely pop up some first impressions at some point tomorrow to go over what I think of some of the new features, and if they took away anything that I am missing.

The big question of course will be what my first match is gonna be. I’m thinking of sending the Undertaker into a Hell in a Cell against Kane…

It’s Going to Be a Busy Week

For many gamers, this is where the gaming season really takes shape, as the months September through December are the prime months for developers to unleash the massively epic games they have been working on. This year is no exception, except for the fact that all the games I have been looking forward to for the year are out as of today, and I will be having most of them in my house by the end of the week. Having all these games at once is going to be torture as I’m torn between what I want to play.

First up is Fallout: New Vegas, which I have rented from Gamefly. Despite the freezing and other bugs/glitches, the game has been a very enjoyable experience. It has the same feel of Fallout 3, but with a new environment, although many of the interior buildings and NPC characters have been recycled from Fallout 3, and are just given new names. As of right now I’m about twenty five hours or so into the game and at level 21, but there is still plenty to do. I have no doubt that, at this rate, I will max out my character at level thirty way before the end of the game. Read More »

New Vegas Bug Blues

Fallout 3 was a game that had a reputation for being “buggy” or “glitchy.” Across all my playthroughs, I don’t remember ever really coming across anything that bugged out the game. Nothing weird ever happened, and the game never froze. I was hoping that my luck would last me through New Vegas, but unfortunately it has not, and I am now subjected to a bug or two every time I sit down to play. Some of the bugs I’ve encountered:

  • The worst bug, by far, is when the game freezes. The worst part is that it can happen anytime, anywhere. The game has frozen when I search a dead body, when I find a new location and the name of the location came up on screen…heck, just five minutes ago it froze during a load screen (which prompted me to quit playing for the night and vent my rage here.) I’ve also had the game freeze for no good reason, just as I am randomly wandering the Mojave Waste. Let me tell you, I have learned very quick to be a constant saver, and I now do a manual save almost every five minutes. It’s very annoying when the game freezes, and you have to manually get up and turn the PlayStation off and then on again (the controller will not work while frozen, so you won’t be able to turn off the console from the comfort of wherever you are playing from.) I really hope the developers are working to fix this particular glitch, because it is extremely annoying.
  • Quite a few times I’ve had friendly faction members attack my companions. At one point I walked into a building with two companions, talked to a guy about a quest, and as I turned to leave he started sneaking and then shot at one of my companions until they fell unconscious. Luckily none of the other faction members, nor my other companion, opened fire, which stopped it from escalating to an all-out brawl. Still, it is pretty darn annoying, and I have taken to leaving my companions behind when going into highly populated areas. Read More »

What Shell Said: 10/22/10

I was sitting in the ol’ gaming chair playing Fallout: New Vegas, when Shell woke up and started searching around the blanket. She then started moaning as she couldn’t find what she was looking for. So I asked:

“What’s the matter?”

She ignored me and continued to look through her blanket.

“What are you looking for?”

“The bugs.”

“What bugs?”

“They’re magnets.”

“Are they over there?”

“No. Where are they?”

“I don’t know where they are.”

“Yes you do.”

“No I don’t.”

“LIAR!”

“I’m not.”By this point it was hard not to laugh, and I started smirking.

“Why are you laughing at me?”

“I’m not. Loki (our cat) just did something funny.”

“Oh Loki.”

With that she laid back down and went to sleep.

First Impressions of Fallout: New Vegas on the PS3

I received Fallout: New Vegas from Gamefly yesterday, between then and this morning I was able to put a couple of hours into the campaign. While New Vegas is an entirely new name with a new storyline, main character, and location, it still feels like it could have simply been DLC from Fallout 3. The few changes that have been made are for the better, but in the end they are more like “tweaks” than all-out changes, and you will definitely feel like you are playing Fallout 3 as you wander the Mojave Desert. Don’t worry, I didn’t pop in any story-revealing spoilers or anything like that.

The game starts off similar to Fallout 3, where we are introduced to the main character and then go through the process of creating him or her. All of the stats from the first game (S.P.E.C.I.A.L.) are here again, and after creating the cosmetic appearance of your character’s face, you assign values to the SPECIAL rating. From there, a doctor will ask you some psychological questions to get your other skills figured out. One thing that is different is that there is now a “Survival” skill that you can put points towards, which will enhance how much health you receive from food and water. The process is all similar to how it was done in Fallout 3, where you used the “baby book” to determine your starting SPECIAL’s and took the GOAT to determine your skills. One new thing in New Vegas is the inclusion of starting perks. After getting your skills assigned, you will have the option of taking up to two special traits. The tricky thing is that while they will boost some aspect of the game, they will also lower another aspect. For example, one will increase your gunfire speed by 20%, but will make you 20% less accurate. It’s your choice if you take these traits or not; you can take, none, one, or two. Once this is finished, you can take your first steps into the Mojave Desert wastes. Read More »

Ahhh, what better way to end Shell’s birthday then with a “What Shell Said”? I don’t know if all the spoiling she got all day got to her in the end or not, but whatever it was it paid off with hilarity.

I was sitting on the ol’ gaming chair playing Fallout: New Vegas while Shell was asleep on the couch. All of a sudden she sits up, looks around, and mumbles something. So I ask:

“Huh?”

“Where’s he off to?”

“Who?”

“Him.”

“Loki?” (our cat)

“No, the leader.”

“Odin?” (our other, fatter cat)

“Yeah.”

I look around and see Odin sleeping on his chair.

“He’s sleeping over there.”

“Mmmmm.”

And just like that, she’s back to sleep…

Went in for a Watch, Left with a Free Teddy Bear As Well

I’m writing this post now, on 10/4, but I won’t be publishing it until after Shell’s birthday (10/20), simply because I don’t want her to know where I went shopping for her or what she is getting for her birthday. However, the story is just so ridiculous that I really wanted to tell it, but don’t want to wait a few weeks so that I will likely forget most of the details. So here it goes:

I went to one of the jewelry stores in the local mall to pick up Shell a watch for her birthday, as she has been wanting a nice fancy one for awhile. So I went to the case, and I found one that I thought she would like. The saleswoman saw me and came over, showed me the watch, and I decided to purchase it. She took me over to the register and began the process of ringing me up. Eventually, the weirdness began when she said to me: Read More »

Tweetdeck Finally Available on Android!

I liked the convenience that Tweetdeck had to quickly post the same thing to both my Facebook and Twitter accounts. What I didn’t like was the fact that it was a whole other program I had to have running on my laptop, and it was annoying. It was available on iPhones, but not Android phones…until now! I just noticed today that Tweetdeck is now an app on the Android Market, and I’m happy as heck about it. I tend to use these social network sites mainly for my blog posts, but now that there is an easy way to access both through my phone, I’ll probably be posting up random nonsense more often.

On a side note: I’ve just noticed that the iPhone is coming to Verizon. After all these years, they finally break their AT&T monopoly…I CALL BULLSHIT! I think the only reason Apple is doing this is because the Android OS smartphones are making a dent in their market share. Well guess what, Apple? You’re too late! Maybe if you had come over to Verizon a few years ago I would have been a loyal iPhone supporter, but you’re too late…I, like many others out there, are Android people now. Screw you Apple, you and your cheesy iPhone!!!

Won A Free Copy of Lego Star Wars

During September, the fine folks over at co-optimus held a month-long Lego video game contest. They basically had some on-site voting to see which of the Lego video games was the best in the eyes of fans. Each week there was a different winner selected, and I won the first week’s prize. The prize was my choice of any Lego video game, aside from Lego Harry Potter since that was week two’s prize (not that I would have chosen it, based on my feelings about the game.) So my choices were Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones, or Rock Band. In the end I went with Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga for the 360.

I had rented Lego Batman and both Indiana Jones games through Gamefly, and did not really them. As for Rock Band, I wasn’t all that keen on the set list for the game. As for Star Wars, I had played through the game previously on the PS2 and loved it. I chose the 360 version for the achievements, and because the PS3 version does not support trophies for some odd reason.

So thanks again to the guys over at co-optimus, who are always putting out plenty of contests while also giving up to the minute news on all games co-op!

PSN Review: DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue

I was a huge fan of the first DeathSpank game, so when I heard a second one was following shortly behind, I was sold. The DeathSpank series was initially going to be episodic, but in the end they decided to pop the series into two different installments. What this means is that DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is practically the same game as the first DeathSpank, with a few minor changes here and there.

The first DeathSpank game ends with DeathSpank recovering one of the Thongs of Virtue from an evil dude who was kidnapping orphans. The sequel continues this storyline as DeathSpank heads after the remaining Thongs of Virtue. There is an all-new world map to explore with new areas and environments. Most notably is the fact that the person who controls the Thong of Generosity is none other than Santa Claus, who is actually controlling the orc army from his mighty North Pole base.

Netflix Instant on PS3 Now Discless: Now Better than 360

I loved that Netflix bought their instant movie/tv show watching to the home consoles, as it is way better to watch from your own tv as opposed to the computer. I used the PS3 initially, and it worked great. The only downside was that you had to put a Netflix disc in the system, so when I wanted to watch a movie I had to get up and change out the game disc with the Netflix one. Then I got a 360, and the fact that their Netflix features were discless made me watch most of my videos on there. I also thought the load times were faster on the 360, and there was less buffering instances.

But yesterday Sony rolled out their own discless Netflix, and I was instantly hooked. Once you select the movie you want to watch, it is played almost instantly. I would say that there is maybe a two-second load time, if that. Also, I haven’t experienced any buffering or lag during play. Also, the Netflix program itself loads up extremely quickly from the PS3′s XMB. The PS3 has also upgraded it’s Netflix capabilities by offering most of the features the 360 does, mainly the ability to get suggestions, browse more categories, and actually search the instant database for movie titles or actors/actresses. The only feature that the 360 still has over the PS3 is the ability to watch a movie/tv show with your online friends.

I am so glad the PS3 got this upgraded version of Netflix. Not only does it now offer the same features that the 360 does, but it is now superior to the 360, in terms of video quality and upload speeds. I’m not saying that the 360′s Netflix is bad, but  the PS3 will offer the same quality experience, just faster. I truly love the instant Netflix on my consoles!!!

This weekend had tons of potential, since my sister was coming up to visit from Brooklyn.  I picked her up from the train station on Friday, and after meeting our parents for lunch at the Eveready Diner we headed back up to Albany. After doing some grocery shopping, we came back to the apartment and played through TMNT: The Arcade Game on the 360. Afterwards, we started cooking dinner, and had it ready for when Shell got home from work. Once dinner was cleaned up, we headed over to the Times Union Center to see the Albany Devils take on the Hartford Wolfpack. Of course we rooted for the Wolfpack, since they are the New York Rangers AHL team. The game was a good one, and after a 2-2 first period, the Albany Devils finally won 3-2 in the shoot out. After the game we went downtown to Emack & Bolios for an ice cream break, and then headed back to the apartment.

Saturday started out pretty great. After a lazy morning (which included some Super Mario Bros. Wii) we all piled in the car and headed up to Troy for the annual Chowder Fest. This was much different from the Chowder Fest we went to in Boston, as there were tons of different varieties at the Troy one, not just New England. The winning chowder was an Autumn Pear one, and other interesting ones were a rueben one and a Thanksgiving dinner one. While admission was free, you had to pay $1 per chowder sample, so between the three of us we were able to sample most of the chowders for a decent price. Read More »

Simpsons Season 22 Shaping Up to be Pretty Decent

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

I’m a huge fan of The Simpsons, but not usually of the past few seasons. While some episodes are okay, many are pretty forgettable and just plain stale. I don’t watch the current season on Sunday nights, but today I sat down and watched the first three episodes of season 22 on hulu.com. While I did not like the first episode, the other two were very good, and feel like old-school episodes in terms of their quality.

The first episode has a dual storyline, with Lisa going away to a Performing Arts camp while Homer and Bart work to defend Krusty before the ICC (International Criminal Court.) The storyline following Lisa was pretty lame, and was more a way to get to people who enjoy the show “Glee”, since many of the show’s stars appeared in the episode. The Krusty storyline was equally lame, as Bart and Homer had to find a way to prove that Krusty had made a positive impact on the world or he would be imprisoned by the ICC. Neither part of the episode was very good, and it gave me a bad feeling for what I might be in for the rest of the season.

PSN Demo Review: Sonic 4

Sonic 4 is yet another classic game revamp with today’s hardware to give it the nostalgic feel while still looking damn good. Mega Man did it, Super Mario did it, heck, even Earth Worm Jim had a tweeked game (mind you it was still the original game for the most part), so popping out a Sonic game along the same wave length was a great idea. Sega has been claiming from the start that it picks up where Sonic & Knuckles left off, and maintains the same look and feel. Once the demo popped up the other night, I couldn’t wait to check it out. Sadly, the demo only allows you to play through Act 1 of the first stage, so there isn’t a whole lot to do, but you do get a feel for what’s in store.

First and foremost, I have to say that the game is beautiful. The graphics are simply amazing, and you can really tell that it incorporates today’s technology while still sticking to a classic 2D Sonic game. It really feels like you’re playing an HD remake of the classic Genesis game, except that the world and enemies are different. The game plays the same as the originals, where you run, jump, and roll around collecting rings and busting up robots to release little woodland critters on your way to the end of the stage. Of course, there are a few things that are different.

Nick Swardson’s “Pretend Time” is a Show I’ll Pretend I Never Watched

CONTAINS SPOILERS

I like Nick Swardson. I enjoyed his role in the movie “Grandma’s Boy” and on “Reno 911″, and I also liked his stand-up, to the point that I have one of his CDs. His humor is definitely more on the juvenile side, as he relies on a lot of gay and bathroom jokes, but it worked in stand-up. Unfortunately, when he transcribes his humor into organized sketches, you realize how stupid his jokes really are, and his show, Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time, becomes unwatchable.

The few sketches I watched were just stupid. The first one took place in a hockey arena, so I was excited at first. I excitement soon dwindled when all that happened in the sketch was that he and his girlfriend got hit in the face repeatedly with hockey pucks, and then they were forced to make out when the “kiss cam” centered on them. It was pretty gross watching these two bloodied people slobbering all over each other, and it just wasn’t funny. The second sketch was even worse, and could very well have been made by a six year old child. Basically it was a mock commercial for a new car called the “Peeus”, which was a car that ran on piss. The mock commercial had people pissing into the car to fuel it up. The weird thing about it was that everyone’s piss was green… Read More »

No Longer Buying Single Player Games

I think I have some kind of crazy, compulsive problem where I have this “need” to have a media collection…I used to buy tons of games, DVDs, CDs, and books just to say “look at my collection.” Tons of CDs were never listen to, even more books were never read, and some DVDs still sit on my case in their original wrapping, having never been watched. Over the past year or two…actually since moving into my current apartment, I have severely cut down on my spending, but there is still one bad habit I maintain…buying single player games.

I really came to this realization this morning. Over the weekend I had beaten Trine, Scott Pilgrim, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, so this morning I needed something to play while waiting for Shell to get ready. I was lying on the floor, looking at my game collection, and I realized that I had a lot of single player games that I will probably never play again. Games like BioShock, God of War, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, and Dragon Age: Origins were all great, wonderful, classic games, but I would probably never play them again; especially since I always have something new to play through Gamefly. So I sat there, and I said “you know Rob, you paid $60 for these games when they came out, you spent less than a month playing through them, and once you beat it, you move on to the next game.” I realized how stupid it was for me to buy these games that I would never play again. I have Gamefly…I can rent any game whenever I want, and usually get it the week it releases if I plan my queue right. It’s so silly for me to be buying these single player games! Read More »
