Last week I met up with Steve for the day, and we ended up playing a round of a card game he had bought called Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot. I am always down for a new board/card game, so I was excited to check it out. Turns out, the game was easy to learn and a heck of a lot of fun to play. That said, I ended up snagging my own copy in the end. We both bought the Remix Addition, since it had a bunch of great cards from the main set as well as from a bunch of the expansions, to really develop the game further without having to purchase each individual expansion.
Killer Bunnies is a card game, revolving around maintaining an army of bunnies, killing off your opponent’s bunnies, and collecting carrots. You can play one card each turn from your hand, but what makes the game difficult to master is that you have to plan out which card you will play two moves in advance. In other words, when it is not your turn, there will be two cards in front of you face down…one that you will play on your next turn, and one that will be played on your next-next turn. So you can have something planned, but by the time that card’s turn comes up, you may not be able to play it anymore, based on how the game has changed.
What makes the game a real winner to me is not the hilarious cards, or the simple rules…it’s how the game is won. There are ten carrots (each one is individually named and numbered, and more are added in in the booster packs) in the game that are located in a store, and all the players are going to try and collect them by playing cards to get them or by purchasing them with money. Once all the carrots have been purchased, the game is over. Then to determine who won, a second collection of the same cards is brought out, and the bottom carrot in that pile is the winning carrot, and that person won the game. For example, if it was revealed that carrot #7 was the winning carrot, whoever had that carrot in their hand wins the game. So you can have a game where someone has six carrots, someone has three, and someone has one, if the person who only has one carrot has the winning carrot, then he/she won the game. The complete randomness of the winning conditions is great, because even if you were getting your butt kicked, had only a few carrots, and were getting bunnies killed left and right, you still have a chance to win when the game ends.
It’s a very fun, simple, and fast card game that is not hardcore at all, and will be easy for anyone to pick up. Also, despite the fact that the game is called “Killer Bunnies”, the cards are not graphically violent at all, so I can see this being a fun family game as well. If you ever have the chanceĀ check it out!
