Sure, its meant to be a kids movie. Its made by Disney, has some young kids getting into trouble. My real interest in it is from the star: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. I have loved pretty much every movie Johnson ever did (aside from Scorpion King). He made a big leap from wrestling to the movies, and he did a damn good job. He has proven to be one of the best actors today, and he is one of the few who dont piss me off. Like Hogan, he moved from the squared circle to the professional film circuit, but unlike Hulk he did a damn good job, and is not as corny. So I rent the movie for him.

The movie is a remake of an older movie, and based on a book. Basically, some kids are being hunted by federal agents because they are not kids, but aliens from another planet. Johnson’s character is a taxi driver who picks them up (not knowing they are aliens since they look like normal kids) and the adventure is born as he helps them evade capture. The point of it all is to get to Witch Mountain, where the kids spaceship is being held at a secret underground military base, so that they can blast off back to their home planet.

PS3 Demo Review- NHL 2010

nhl2019

I havent played an NHL game since 08. NHL 09 I wasnt a fan of. I tried it on the PS2, and tried the PS3 demo, but I wasnt a fan of it, and never went further with it. I just stuck to 08 on my PS2 when I wanted to play hockey.

However, I have been looking forward to 2010. One of the biggest reasons I didnt like 09 was because it made a big move control wise. Rather than having one of the buttons assigned to shoot and pass and what not, the right analog was made to control shooting. I never got comfortable with it in the demo, and thus never had an interest to pursue it. In 2010 the right analog once again controls shooting and deking, and I am now ready to accept this fundamental change and get used to it.

Gamefly’s Picking Up the Pace

I popped Wolfenstein into the mailbox on Wednesday, and I already have my next game on the way. I ended up renting 50 Cent: Blood in the Sand. Now dont be hatin’…Im not a fan of 50 Cent’s music or anything like that, but I heard it was a decent game. I also wanted a quick game, because I’ll be picking up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 in two weeks, and also hope to be the first to rent NHL 2010 from Gamefly when it comes out. Thus, I wanted a game that wouldnt be too long, and that I could rock through in time to send it back and hold off until NHL comes out.

Also, while Gamefly may be picking up the pace, my gaming pace will soon come to a crashing halt. I start my college classes next week, and I start student teaching on the 8th. Thus, that will result in zero game time. I will have to wake up around 5ish in order to get to the school on time Monday-Friday. I have two night classes, so I will have to be doing work for them, as well as doing two different lesson plans a day (I have honors and intergrated classes for student teaching), and will also be having to do the grading for those classes as well. When its all said and done, I dont expect to have much gaming time from September until its over in December…

Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection is my First Platinum!

Yes, its official. As of this afternoon, I have achieved my first platinum trophy for my PS3. As you can see, the game was Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection. While Im glad I finally achieved this, it was a rough road.

Many of the trophies were time-consuming. I had to play each game for about a minute, then exit out and go on to the next one, to get a trophy. I had to go into each game and look at the original game and cartridge art to get a trophy. However, the toughest challenge for me was getting the Yatta! trophy, which is gotten by beating Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, clearly the hardest game in the collection.

I spent well over an hour trying to beat the final level. Eventually I went online, and several people suggested that you play it on the hardest difficulty, making the pieces fall down faster, and just randomly place stuff and hope that the AI messes up. Well I probably did this for about 20 minutes, and eventually it happened. I started a new game, and was dropping my pieces, and I look over at the AI screen, and he has this huge stack going to the top. Suddenly, he hits the top, dies, and I win the game, and get my precious trophy! I literally beat him within ten seconds that round. It was great!

So the Genesis Collection is my first platinum trophy. I hope to get another one soon for Sacred 2, but otherwise I dont know about any others. My other games are either too challenging to get platinum in, or dont support trophies at all. We shall see.

Closing in on My First Platinum Trophy

So I thought that Sacred 2 was going to most likely be my first platinum trophy for the PS3. I only need ten more trophies to get it, and most are just a matter of time. However, it will be time-consuming, and is still a ways off.

I was playing some more of Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection today, and I realized that I pretty much need only three more trophies in order to get the platinum. I just need to get the following:

Vectorman 2- Get to level 11

Sonic Spinball- Get 10,000,000 points on level 1

Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine- Complete story mode

PS3 Review: Wolfenstein

So I just completed the single player campaign today. The story follows BJ Blazokwicz as he attempts to take out the Nazi’s plan to build a super weapon from another dimension. The game takes place in basically two areas; Midtown and Downtown. From those two areas, you interact with resistance fighters to accept missions, and then travel to a marker on the map to begin the mission. Along with interacting with them, you will also find black market dealers, who can sell you upgrades and ammunition for your weapons. Weapons range from tradition guns and grenades to advanced Nazi weapons like a proton gun (reminds me of Ghostbusters) and a large gun that disintegrates enemies.

As you travel through the city, you will run into Nazi squads which you will have to engage and take out. Also, you will be on the lookout for intellegince documents, gold, and hidden tomes. Both sections of the city have a set amount hidden throughout, as well as each mission. Finding these items not only will eventually land you a trophy, but you also collect money, which is used to purchase upgrades from the black market.

Movie Review: Inglourious Basterds

I was super excited to see Inglourious Basterds. First off, I love Quentin Tarantino. Secondly, I love WWII. Thirdly, I love killing Nazis. Thus, there was no way I was not going to see the movie in theaters. Shell did not want to see it, and I had no one else to go with. So yesterday I went to the theater on my lonesome to see the movie. It wasnt the first time I went by myself…I had seen Cloverfield by myself also for the same reasons listed above. But I digress.

As can be seen by the commercial/trailer, the movie is about a group of guys killing Nazis. Brad Pitt’s character is in charge of a secret group that are dropped into Nazi-occupied France in 1941, before the storming of Normandy. His mission is to attack Nazi soldiers through guerilla warfare, and use such brutality that it shakes the Nazi soldiers, and it does. Stories of their attacks spread through the Nazi forces, and they become legends.

However, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of Nazi killing. The movie is promoted by this insuiation that there will be a hell of a lot of brutal Nazi killing, but there really isnt as much as you would expect. Instead, there is a story of revenge, as a young French woman plans to blow up her movie theater in order to kill a bunch of Nazis. At the same time, the Basterds (so-named by the Nazi soldiers) are at the same theater in an attempt to assassinate Hitler. So by the end of the movie, there are these two forces trying to accomplish the same goal, and the rest is historically inaccurate.

The Gilded Otter Brewing Company

Shell and I met up with Steve and his friend in New Paltz last night, and had dinner at The Gilded Otter. I had originally heard of the place from a friend, and we were going to go with them, but when we got there the parking lot was 100% full, leaving us nowhere to park, so we didnt stay. We went to New Paltz last night since its kind of a half way point between Steve and me.

The Gilded Otter is a restaurant/brewing company. They produce several different beers at the place, and feature it with their food. Shell and I got there a little before Steve, so we went up to the bar and got our drink on a little early. I tried their Hefeweizen beer, which was pretty awesome, and had the faintest taste of banana. I had never heard of Hefeweizen until a few weeks ago, when it was in my Sam Adams summer collection of beers I bought. I liked Sams Hefeweizen also, but the Gilded Otter’s simply blew it away. Shell partook in her drink of choice; hard cider. The Gilded Otter does not make their own hard cider, but they bring it in from Warwick, which is also a local producer.

Eventually Steve and his friend got there, and we sat down at a table. Steve and I ended up ordering a sampling of their beer. I forgot what the exact name was, but it consisted of eight small glasses of each of their draft beers, along with a card so you knew what you were drinking. They were all pretty good, and after sampling them all, I still thought their Hefeweizen was the best.

So now onto the food. The menu at The Gilded Otter is extensive, and has some classics (wings, mozz sticks, calamari, etc.) as well as some upper-scale foods you wouldnt normally find at a bar/pub (smoked trout mousse, stuffed grape leaves, and mussels.) We stuck to the classics for appetizers and ordered chicken wings. There was mild, hot, and BBQ, and we went with hot. It was a very good hot wing sauce, and had some nice heat to it. For dinner I ordered braised short ribs, which was awesome. The side it came with was horseradish mashed potatoes, gravy, and squash. I wasnt a big fan of the potatoes (since Im not a fan of horseradish), but with the gravy and squash mixed with it, I enjoyed it. Steve got an order of jambalaya, and he was pleased with the heat and spice with it. Steve’s friend and Shell both had a bowl of spinach fettuchini and a bolognese sauce, which was also excellent. We also ended up ordering dessert. Shell and I split a slice triple chocolate cheesecake and Steve had a chocolate peanutbutter pie.

The Gilded Otter is freakin awesome! The beer is great, the food is delicious, the service was fast and pleasant (Steve had fun pestering the waitress as usual), and the overall atmosphere was pretty cool. I would totally go back, and I recommend anyone who is close by to go check it out. Heck, its worth the 1 hour 15 minute car ride for me!

What Shell Said- 8/25/09

This was a totally different kind of “What Shell Said.” Rather than her mumbling from the couch when I wake her to go to bed, this is the first time she actually did it in the middle of the night, while we were sleeping.

It was about 2am (1:5ish). I awoke because the bedroom light was suddenly on. I look around in confusion, and Shell is kinda standing near the bed, looking at me. I said, “Whats wrong?”

Now I dont remember the exact dialouges since it was 2am, but this is pretty much how it went down.

Starting Back at My Roots with The Simpsons

The past few weeks Ive been home, Ive been watching all the Simpsons seasons on DVD. Today I got up to Season Five. Its really cool to look at where it started, and watch all these seasons in a row to see the changes made.  A lot of progression was made. It was hilarious to see the difference in voice and appearance of all the characters (one of the funniest is Smithers getting a race change, and going from black to white…or yellow, in the Simpsons case.)

There are also technical changes. For example, in the early seasons the 742 Evergreen Terrace is the address of Snake, when he is a cattle rustler next door to Lovejoys house. Then by season five, 742 Evergreen Terrace is the Simpsons address, and has remained so since then. Also, in Season Two Hans Moleman’s name is Ralph Melish, then by Season Five it is officially Hans Moleman.

Man, its great to see the show get better and better. The show is great from the start at Season One, but really picks up with Seasons Three and Four, and by Five it is truly classic. Its been a blast going down memory lane watching all these episodes. I really love the show, and just wish that they would release the seasons faster.

Movie Review: District 9

Shell and I went to see District 9 last night. We were both a bit nervous. I was nervous that it would suck, and Shell was nervous that it would be scary. We were both proven wrong.

First off, the trailers for the movie reveal only the basic background information on the plot of the movie. What actually happens is pretty nifty. Lets just say a government agent has an “accident”, goes AWOL,  and ends up befriending one of the aliens, which are referred to as Prawns (due to their appearance, and because “they are bottom-feeders”.) The movie plot is quite original. As can be determined from the commercials, a bunch of aliens got stranded on Earth, and are given territory in South Africa which quickly becomes quite slummy. The aliens are all poor and end up having to scavenge in order to live.

The movie touches on quite an interesting point…what would we (humans) do if a bunch of aliens got stranded on Earth, and had to live? Would we be inclined to give them rights, and allow them to live amongst us? Or would be end up segragating them, forcing them to live in horrible conditions? This basic premise is masterfully worked out in the film, and I really enjoyed the basic plot, as well as the main plot.

The movie begins and ends as a documentary. There are reports and interview clippings shown of individuals talking about the events that happen before the movie (to give you background information) and at the end of the film (to draw a closing.) This was a brilliant idea, and was a really neat way of getting acquainted with the aliens, where they are, and why they are there.

The movie was a great SciFi/Action flick, and one of the better films Ive seen this summer. It was a real treat, and if you’re a fan of either of the genres I mentioned, definitely check it out. You wont be disappointed.

Brushing Up on my Civil War History

While American History is my main passion, many will be surprised to learn that one of the things I know least is the Civil War. Im sure many would find this ridiculous, as most American historians love the Civil War. For some weird reason, I never found it as interesting as the American Revolution. I like earlier American History, from the original colonies probably up to the War of 1812. From then on, my knowledge kind of dwindles down.

So I started reading None Died in Vain by Robert Leckie. Its a huge 500+ page book with extremely small text, but so far it has been successful in keeping my interest. The book starts all the way at the beginning, going into the differences between the North and South, and some of the key events that started the South talking about secession. The chapter on Lincoln’s short biography was extremely interesting. I learned a lot about his early life, and didnt realize a lot of the stuff he did or went through.

The book will eventually go through the entire Civil War, which is good. I needed a book like this so that I can start learning about this important part of American History.

Nice Relaxing Weekend

So this was the first weekend in a long time where we didnt do anything or go anywhere. It was sooo great.

Yesterday we had a lazy start, eventually heading out to go grocery shopping. After lunch I started doing some reading for school while Shell slept. After dinner, we  went out for ice cream. After which we played Rock Band 2 and then called it a night.

Today was even lamer. We had another late morning, and eventually got to the gym. After we got back we had lunch and watched Gran Torino. We then cleaned the house (I vacuumed while Shell cleaned the bathrooms), played some Wii for a bit,  and then cooked up a nice steak dinner (I had a ribeye and Shell had a porterhouse…mmmm…steaks…) After dinner we pretty much crashed on the couch and watched TV til Shell drifted off to sleep around 9:30, then I played some Wolfenstein til about 10ish when Steve came online, and we played Sacred 2 until about 11:30.

So I enjoyed my slacking weekend. It was nice to sit home in PJs all day and do nothing. Tomorrow starts my last week of summer vacation, as next week I start college classes and then the week after that starts student teaching. My summer of slacking is pretty much over…I need to get ready to transition into super uber busy mode in the coming weeks.

Movie Review: Gran Torino

This movie has been on my Netflix queue since it released. I finally got it this weekend after waiting at least a month. Its gotten lots of rave reviews and what not, and thats basically why I wanted to see it. I was never a huge Clint Eastwood fan, but based on the buzz I was hearing, I had to see it.

The movie is about a recent widower (Clint Eastwood) who is now living alone at home. His house happens to be in a community where different ethnicities have moved in over the recent years, and he is one of the last “white” people around. He is a very bitter man, and the movie is chock full of racial slurs. I couldnt help myself but laugh as Eastwood, a very crabby old man who doesnt give a hell about what anyone thinks, tells it like it is, making racial comments to everyone from Asians to Africans and from Irish to Italians. I dont think any race is left untouched in this movie.

But the movie isnt meant to be a funny movie, despite my constant laughter. It turns out to be a much deeper movie as he slowly becomes attached to one of the ethnic families, and begins to see them as his family. He also has to compete with the gangs that are having an effect on the families in the neighborhood. It was a pretty good movie, and I definitely enjoyed it. I would recommend it, so long as you can take his character’s constant slurs, and plenty of gang violence.

Rockin’ Out Last Night

So Lock n’ Loki made its return after a few months hiatus last night. I picked up my guitar, Shell picked up her drum sticks, and we played ourselves some Rock Band 2. Eventually she traded in her sticks for the microphone and started doing vocals. I really like these music games, especially because its a game that Shell enjoys playing.

We both moved on to medium difficulty. Im pretty sucky at it, but Shell does pretty well on both drums and vocals. For some reason I cant get used to handling four buttons, which is pretty sad seeing that most people can handle all five and rock through expert like it was nothing.

At one point in the night, I started doing really bad. Im still not sure if it was the guitar (the strummer felt weird and was not reacting when I pressed it) or the couple of Spiced Gingers (Rum and Ginger Ale) I had. Either way, I will have to test it again soon to determine if it was the guitar or not. Has anyone else experienced a problem with their instrument? Did you have to send it back to the company for repairs?

Trade-In to Gamefly was a Success

I got the email yesterday. I shipped LittleBigPlanet off to Gamefly on Tuesday, and got credited for it Friday. The process was pretty enjoyable and hassle-free. The website design was great, and I easily found my game. The directions are not only displayed on screen, but print out when you print up a packing slip. It didnt take long at all for me to get my credit, which is going to be applied directly to my monthly services. It adds up to almost two months, which is a pretty good deal for a game I havent touched in forever.

So yeah, I highly recommend Gamefly. Sure, you dont get cash, but you get free game rentals, which is almost as good. It sure beats going to Gamestop and getting like $10 in credit for a game you paid $60 for. Amazon seems to have a good system also, but when I compared the prices, Gamefly offered $10 more for the same game. I had a great experience trading in to Gamefly, so if you want to dump some old games, go through there for sure.

We were watching TV last night, and happened across a show depicting the career of the Neelys, who are a husband/wife duo who have several shows on Food Network. Shell wanted us to cook together in the kitchen, so tonight we did just that.

We made a jambalaya. I cut up the peppers, onions, shallots, garlic, and sausage while she peeled the shrimp and cooked the rice. I then started up the pan and threw in the stuff, and Shell added the shrimp and some seasonings. It wound up being a really tasty meal. Was it luck? Or was it that when our powers combine, we are unstoppable in the kitchen???

All in all, not only was the food tasty, but it was fun too. We had a beer while cooking, and also snacked on some carrots while the dinner cooked. We were home together all day today, so it wasnt as big a deal, but I think it will be cool to do on days when we dont see each other the entire day (while she works and Im schooling it up.) Im sure we will be doing this more often. Its a lot of fun, and something that all couples probably should try out.

PS3 Demo Review- Mini Ninjas

Much like it sounds, Mini Ninjas is a game about cutesy little ninjas. The main character must go on a quest to save his friends and the animals of the forest from some evil Samruai forces. I was pretty impressed overall with the demo.

The main character is Hiro, and the game is similar to most adventure games where you walk around a 3D world. Hiro uses a sword for his basic attacks, but he can also learn ninja spells, such as casting fireballs and lightning bolts. Another pretty neat ability he has is to enter the bodies of animals, and thus take control of them. So you can fly a little with a chicken or bash some bad guys with the bear or boar. You must also explore and snag all sorts of collectables, including ingredients to make more spells. Along the way there are side missions you will be able to activate by talking to people in need (for example, I had to find a flower for a giant stork.)

So while Hiro is fun to play with, it doesnt stop there. You also have the ability to switch between Hiro and a bunch of his friends. The demo had two others already unlocked. One was a big guy who swung a hammer, so he was definitely a slow but powerful character. The other was a faster moving ninja girl. The demo reveals that there are other characters, each with different weapons. For example, I saw a girl with a bo staff, an archer, and a guy with Wolverine-like claws on his hands. This ability to switch characters to overcome different obstacles is pretty cool. Im not sure if there is two-player co-op, but there sure is room for it in this game.

So overall, the demo did a great job in displaying the potential this game has. Its an action-adventure game where you run around an adorable environment filled with great characters. Im not sure if I would recommend purchasing it yet. I would have to wait and get some other initial reviews, and determine how much play time is actually in the game. Its just that the demo made it seem that the game is going to be short in length, and if thats the case, I wouldnt recommend it. But if there is two player gameplay in it, it will definitely be worth looking more into.

When Turkeys Attack

So I went out to throw out the trash and pick up the mail this afternoon after our crazy thunderstorm, and was greeted by a huge flock of turkeys. There were three adults, and the rest seemed to be juveniles. I dont know exactly how many, but I would say there were about 12-15 of turkeys in all. After seeing them I ran inside to grab my camera, and luckily they were still around when I went back outside, so I was able to get a few pics. As I was taking pictures, two of the adults took to the air and were flapping around as they got nervous. I thought it was from me, but then I saw an orange cat go running into the trees, so that must have been what got them riled up. Eventually they got tired of me taking pictures and they ran into the trees.
