I walked into the movie a little scared. I like Jack Black, but was disappointed with his recent performances, especially with “Be Kind, Rewind.” So I walked in not sure if I would be getting Jack Black at his best, or a lamer version. I was most pleased.
Year One stars Jack Black and Michael Cera as cavemen, who are kicked out of their tribe and explore the world to find civilizations. I was very shocked with all the biblical references, from the Tree of Knowledge to Cain and Able to Abraham attempting to sacrifice his son. But they were done in a funny, great way, and I really enjoyed the subtle humor. In fact, I enjoyed the movie as a whole.
Black and Cera were both hilarious. Each of them have a knack for comedy (Black is in-your-face and loud, while Cera is subtle, quiet, and meak), and made a very good comedic duo who foiled each other very well. The rest of the cast was good, as were the guest appearances/cameos. It was a very funny, laugh out loud comedy. Many comedys recently have been funny for the first half, and then lose their hilarity in the story. Year One did not fall victim to this, and advanced the story while delivering a multitude of laughs.
If you’re a Jack Black fan, its a must see. If you like stupid, hilarious comedys, its a must see. If you like neither, then you should probably avoid it.
