I recently picked up the game from Gamefly, and popped it in this morning. The game is set in Africa, where you are caught between two guerrilla armies while looking for the leader of a third. Upon starting the game, I had a choice of eight characters to choose from. I was like “huh?!” The confusing thing is that there appears to be no difference…they dont have unique abilities or different stats or anything. Very weird.
The game is your standard FPS. You run (or drive) around, completing missions and shooting up baddies. My biggest disappointment is that there are no animals in the game. I mean, come on, the game takes place on African plains and junk. I expected to be ambushed by lions in the high grass or alligators in the swamps and rivers, but no…not a single animal. Its very weird. I mean, not that I hate animals and want to go on a virtual hunting expedition, but it would have served as some variety. When it comes to FPS, I like to shoot either non-humans (aliens, mutants, zombies, etc.) or Nazis. I dont really get as into a game that has me shooting up terrorist or guerilla armies. Now maybe if they had some “gorilla” armies I would be a bit more pleased, but as I already mentioned, no animal enemies.
However, the game is holding my interest thus far, so I’ll keep playing. I was initially turned off by the required driving, but now that I have become accustomed to it, Im starting to enjoy it. Many of the jeeps come with mounted machine guns, so you drive your jeep into an enemy camp, then hop into the back and pick up the machine gun and fire away. You also go diamond hunting, and the diamonds you find can be traded in for new weapons, or you can upgrade weapons, health packs, or vehicles.
The game may not be all that enthralling with having a lame, boring story, but the gameplay is solid enough to keep me going for now. If you like FPS, check it out. If not, then I wouldnt recommend it. Theres better FPS out there for the PS3 that warrant your attention more.
