I Heart Hulu

So Ive just begun checking out Hulu this week, and so far Im liking it. If you dont know, its a website where you can watch TV episodes and movies for free. There is no player or anything to download, as you can watch it right off the site. There are commercial breaks, but only 15-30 seconds long, which isnt too bad.

I like it because it is fast, has good quality, and is convenient. I remember having to watch missed episodes of Heroes or Lost on either NBC or ABCs websites, and it was a pain the the butt. You had to install a player onto your computer first, then you had to follow a confusing series of menus to find the option to play the show you want to watch, then you had to guess which was the most current episode (because they werent numbered or anything). Also, the quality sucked, and the videos often skipped, and it took forever to load up.

Hulu is not like that. You just search for what you want, and if its there it comes up. I just watched an episode of the Simpsons that I missed from a few weeks ago and it was great. The episodes are not only labeled with their title, but also the season and episode numbers, so you know where in the season it is. Good stuff all around. I could have used this a few years ago when I was in my first Oneonta apartment, and didnt have television at all.

I highly recommend checking it out. You can find your favorites that you missed, plus some new stuff that you probably would never watch.

So Much to Learn

I was curious to see how much traffic my site was getting, so I went and checked out the control panel to see if I could figure it out. I couldnt so I got some live chat going with the Bluehost help. Turns out, I never turned on the option to track visitors and other stats, so thats sad. I was successful in turning it on, so I’ll start keeping track now.

But I ponder…what else am I missing out on? I mean, I would think that stat tracking would be available from the get-go, not some hidden option that I had to enable. I wonder what other neat features Im missing out on due to not knowing whats going down…

Busy Day

Shell and I were pretty busy today.

My family from New Hampshire are coming down tomorrow, so we spent the day preparing the apartment. Before the cleaning began, we had to run some errands in the morning and do food shopping for tomorrow. As we walked into Wal-Mart we got caught in the middle of a hail storm, but it wasnt too bad. It rained on and off a bit the rest of the day.

When we got back we ate lunch, and then got down to cleaning. I think I found enough of Loki’s hair that, if I combined it all, I could make a Loki clone. Shell did lots of cleaning, and is baking a cake now. Tomorrow morning she’ll make up a nice batch of baked ziti. YUM!!!

Despite how busy we have been, I still got in a few hours of Ghostbusters, Sacred 2, and Resistance 2.

Upcoming Review of Resistance 2

So as I was writing my last post, I was thinking “did I ever do a review of Resistance 2?” I went back through my blogs, and was horrified to discover that, no I did not.

I had a post complaining about idiots who play the game but dont play with the rest of the squad (ie- think of themselves and often get killed), a post about my medic reaching level 20, and a post about some moron who was blasting Avril Lavigne through their headset, but no review.

This is a travesty.

Ive been meaning to go back through the campaign mode again to get some trophies I missed on my first run-through, so after playing that for a bit to refresh my thoughts on the single player campaign, I will write up a full review covering the single player and online co-op modes (and hey, I’ll even try the online competitive mode, even though thats generally something I steer clear from because I suck).

Getting Back into Resistance 2

Its been a few months since I was playing Resistance 2. I was sidetracked mainly by Sacred 2, plus all the new games Ive been renting through Gamefly. So on Thursday and Friday, I got together with a few dudes from co-optimus and got back to blasting away Chimera. I think that next to Sacred 2, Resistance 2 offers the best, funnest online co-op gaming experience.

Its a must-have for all PS3 owners (this means you, Steve)

PS3 Review- Ghostbusters Online Co-Op

So Steve and I got around to playing Ghostbusters the past couple of nights. It was a pretty fun experience.

The way it sounded, I initially assumed that the Ghostbusters online co-op would be like that of Resistence 2- a bunch of short mini-missions. However, thats not how it works out. The basic set up is that you start a round with up to three others, and play three random (or you can select them) mini-games. Each player chooses one of the four original Ghostbusters (or the new and horrible “Rookie” character) and you and your team work your way through the three stages. Each stage is basically like a different mode.

Each stage follows the same basic premise. If your player gets knocked out, you can either have a fellow ‘Buster revive you, or wait 25 seconds for the auto-revive. However, if all four players become knocked out, then the stage ends. Also, each stage has power-ups for new weapons, as well as a force field-like bubble. Also, as you bust ghosts, you receive cash. Cash is not used to purchase anything, but instead seen as your “score”. A higher score unlocks new uniforms and “titles”, such as “Ghostbuster of the Year.” These do not help you in-game, but are purely for leader boards and bragging rights.

Survival mode is by far my favorite. You and your team basically have to try and survive several waves of ghosts and destructible enemies. Each progressing wave consists of tougher ghosts as well as more of them. The final waves are pure chaos, as the screen is filled with many ghosts who wont go into the traps without a fight.

Containment mode is, in my opinion, the most challenging. You and your team have two minutes to trap as many ghosts as possible. As you trap ghosts, you get precious seconds added back to the timer. When the timer reaches 0, its stage over. I find this the most challenging due to the rushed pace and limited time, and thus the least enjoyable.

Destruction mode is also a blast. Basically, there are these green relics which appear on the map, and you and your team have to destroy as many as possible within five minutes. The trick is that the relics spawn ghosts, so they are usually heavily guarded. However, once you destroy a relic, the associated ghosts will disappear, thus the trick is to not waste time on trapping ghosts, but smashing their relics.

Thief mode was decent. There are four artifacts you must protect from ghosts who will attempt to swoop in, snag them, and take off. So you just sit around and blast ghosts as they come in. If one does grab one, you can destroy it in order to retrieve the artifact.

There is also a fifth mode titled Protection, but I havent gotten around to playing it yet.

So what do I think of it? While its not a co-op campaign, the modes are still entertaining. The single-player campaign is a lot of fun, but short, and does not leave much for replay value. The online co-op is what gives this game life, and more importantly, replay value. The co-op mode saves the game, and warrants a purchase.

Fried Plantains

Shell made some curried chicken, rice, and fried plantains for dinner tonight, and the plantains were simply delectable! She sliced them, then pan-fried them, and then coated them with salt. It was pure heaven. The combination of sweet and salty started a block party in my mouth. My only regret is that I didnt take any pics of them…

Plantains will definitely be a new staple in our dinners from now on.

Salsa Latina Restaurant

Good Mexican food is easy to come by, but the best blows the others right out of the water. The best Mexican food I have ever had was at Salsa Latina, in Albany.

We went back for the second time last night, and it was as good as the first time. The place is small, but the food is excellent. You get complimentary chips and salsa, and their salsa is the very best. It is a nice, spicy salsa, which you dont get too often. I find that most restaurants have a milder salsa, but I like salsa to have a bite, and theirs does.

The menu is very extensive, with the usual “combo meals” of taco, enchilladas, tamales, etc., as well as awesome traditional Mexcian meals of beef, pork, chicken, and others. They also have a large seafood menu as well as some pastas and other stuff. So for our return trip, I was craving my favorite Mexican meal…carnitas.

Carnitas is a slow-cooked pulled pork with a savory sauce, and Salsa Latina makes it the best. The pork is ridiculously tender and flavorful…its nothing short of amazing. It comes with some lettuce, pico de gallo, jalopenos, rice, beans, and tortillas so you can make some little sandwhiches. It is sooo amazingly delicious…I dont think my words can give it justice.

Also, Mondays are 2 for 1 margarita nights. Shell went there thinking they were half price, but they were indeed buy one get one. So as we got into our meal and she was still nursing her ‘rita, the waiter came over with another one, since we are paying for two. So $5 got Shell two margaritas, and they were also the best I ever had. Im not a big ‘rita fan, but these were tasty enough that I know I will be replacing my Tecate with a margartita next time we go. The ‘rita is just perfect for killing down the spiciness that lingers on your tongue from the delicious food.

If you’re in the Captial District and looking for some Mexican food, go the Salsa Latina for the very best.

Ah yes, its summer time, and the great movies are coming out to shine. Heres what Im looking forward to (in no particular order):

  • Transformers- Revenge of the Fallen
  • Public Enemies
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Inglorious Bastards
  • Funny People
  • D-9
  • Zombieland
  • 2012
  • Nottingham (even though it comes out in November, Im excited for Robin-based films)

Theres some others coming out later on that look interesting, like Sherlock Holmes and the remake of Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey as Scrooge, but thats not what this is about. There were more, but the bigger-hits like Wolverine and Star Trek already came and went. Plus, there are probably a few coming out that I havent heard of it.

I know I’ll be seeing Transformers for sure at some point next week. Im pretty excited for it. I really enjoyed the first one.

Movie Review- Year One

I walked into the movie a little scared. I like Jack Black, but was disappointed with his recent performances, especially with “Be Kind, Rewind.” So I walked in not sure if I would be getting Jack Black at his best, or a lamer version. I was most pleased.

Year One stars Jack Black and Michael Cera as cavemen, who are kicked out of their tribe and explore the world to find civilizations. I was very shocked with all the biblical references, from the Tree of Knowledge to Cain and Able to Abraham attempting to sacrifice his son. But they were done in a funny, great way, and I really enjoyed the subtle humor. In fact, I enjoyed the movie as a whole.

Black and Cera were both hilarious. Each of them have a knack for comedy (Black is in-your-face and loud, while Cera is subtle, quiet, and meak), and made a very good comedic duo who foiled each other very well. The rest of the cast was good, as were the guest appearances/cameos.Ā  It was a very funny, laugh out loud comedy. Many comedys recently have been funny for the first half, and then lose their hilarity in the story. Year One did not fall victim to this, and advanced the story while delivering a multitude of laughs.

If you’re a Jack Black fan, its a must see. If you like stupid, hilarious comedys, its a must see. If you like neither, then you should probably avoid it.

PS3 Review- Uncharted 2 Beta

So as I already mentioned previously, I was able to get into the Uncharted 2 online beta thanks to the good folks at Co-optimus. So I popped it on today, and played the co-op mode. The co-op mode consists of a short stage, where you and two others play through the level.

I liked it. It had similar controls to the first Uncharted, and the same fighting style, where you run, find cover, and shoot up some baddies. Only this time, you are joined by two friends, who take on two other characters. Its a lot of fun. There are some areas where you need a buddy to help you through. For example, at one part, a player had to stand at the bottom of a street lamp and offer a boost up to the other players. Also, a big part of it is reviving your buddies. When a player goes down, the other players have a chance to run over and revive the player. So if all three players go down, its game over.

I really enjoyed it. I think it worked well as co-op. Its a shame the actual game wont feature this, and the online co-op will only consist of mini-missions, and not the entire campaign. Still, it was a lot of fun, and I look forward to the finished product. Im sure I’ll play through it a few more times, and even try the competitive mode eventually.

Good stuff. It lives up to the first Uncharted, which I think is one of Sony’s best exclusives (next to God of War and Resistance, of course). But Uncharted is something that PS3 players need…something that they can have, and gloat over the other players who dont have a PS3. The Uncharted series is definitely one of the top Ps3 exclusives.

PS3- Ghostbusters Quickie Review

So I put about an hour into the game so far, so heres a quick thought on it.

First off, I like it. I think the graphics, voice acting, and everything else is presented in a great way, which I think does reflect, to a degree, the Ghostbusters.

The single player gameplay is of course the heart of the game. You play the new Ghostbusters recruit, so you run around with the four other guys. I didnt like this idea at all. First off, you’re not even given a name. When they attempt to introduce your character, Venkman jumps in and says, “I dont want to know any names.” I thought this was very lame. I dont see why you couldnt just alternate between playing one of the four Ghostbusters, since your character is always paired up with at least one of them.

Now as for the gameplay itself. Obviously, you are busting ghosts. You use the main proton gun to weaken the health of the ghosts. Once they are weakened enough, the beam switches to a containment beam, which acts as a lasso. You can then whip the ghosts around the room, slamming them into the environment to further weaken them. Once they are weakened enough, you can throw down a trap, direct the ghost over the trap, and then direct him into the trap. To break up the ghost catching, at times there are general enemies which you will just have to blast until you destroy them.

Also, you spend a lot of time ghost hunting. You need to use the PKE meter to track a ghost down. For example, at times ghosts are hiding in objects or something, so you have to scan it with the PKE meter in order to flush them out so you can start busting them. You also use the PKE meter to scan the environment to get data on the ghosts, as well as unlockables and other bonus content. As you bust ghosts and such, you get money, which can be used to purchase upgrades for your beams and traps.

A few things I’d like to whine about. First, is the lack of a save point. Not so much that I cant save manually whenever I want, or that I need to find a place to save the game, but the fact that I dont know when the game is saving at a checkpoint. Thus, if Im playing, and I want to finish, I dont know when its safe to turn the game off, because I dont know where the last checkpoint was.

I also found the ghosts to be somewhat of a pain in the butt. They will charge you and knock you down, and the thing is that they do it so fast, with little warning. In most games, you can get a sense of a pattern or something, so you know when an enemy will attack. But not here, you will find yourself knocked to your ass several times out of nowhere.

Overall, its fun, and Im enjoying it. Its definitely got a staying power, and I’ll hold onto it until I at least complete the single player campaign. Hopefully at some point I’ll get to check out the online multiplayer modes.

I’ll pop up a fuller review later on, but so far the game is awesome.

Mmm…Steak…

I remember being a very picky eater as a kid and teenager. If we went to restaurant, I wouldnt want to go unless burgers were on the menu. I recall going to places like Olive Garden and Red Lobster, and only eating chicken fingers. However, I eventually became a “steak man”, as I am today. Sadly, I still remember the day it happened.

The family and I were vacationing in Niagra Falls, and we went to a very nice restaurant. The special of the day was a prime rib. I wanted no part of it, but no Dad got mad that all I ate was burgers and stuff, so he coerced me into eating it. He regretted it in the end though, as I fell in love. From that point on, for the next few years, I only ordered prime rib!

Today, my favorite cut of meat is ribeye. Its such a tender, delicious slab of tastiness. Its like biting into a bloody cloud of heaven. I like pretty much all steaks, but ribeye is the best.

bigstockphoto_ribeye_steak_1241204 ribeye1

The reason Im writing all this is because we are watching Iron Chef right now, and the secret ingredient is cowboy ribeye steaks, which are an extra-thick cut of ribeye. It looks so tasty…I wish I could pull the steak out of the TV, like in Willy Wonka…

Damn You Gamefly

Well, as I stated previously, I got the confirmation e-mail Tuesday morning at 11:00am that Ghostbusters had been shipped. It is now Thursday, and my mailbox was disappointingly devoid of any ghosts, or their fellow busters. It stinks! I have the entire day off tomorrow, and I cant do any busting.

So I say damn you Gamefly, damn you to the very heart of hell! While I love you, I hate how slow your service is. You claim to have this instant postal-checking system, where the post office scans my games so you know when I sent them back, yet it usually takes about four-five business days for me to hear that you received it. Then it takes three business days to ship a game to me. LUDICROUS!!!

Netflix usually has a day of processing time. For example, I sent back a DVD today. Tomorrow afternoon I will get an e-mail saying they received it, then another e-mail within an hour saying “we shipped your next movie”, and it will be in my mailbox on Saturday.

So whats the solution Gamefly? How can you make me a happy consumer? The answer is quite simple…be like Netflix, and kindly open a distribution center in Albany. If Netflix can do it, Im sure you can too. Either that, or I may very well have to move to Pittsburgh. But then again, I wouldnt want to be anywhere near that Crosby-infested area…

Uncharted 2 Beta Here I Come

I just received a code to get into the Uncharted 2 beta, thanks to the grand folks over at Co-optimus. Wish I didnt have my test tonight so I could check it out now, but theresĀ  cramming to be had. Luckily Im off all day tomorrow, so I’ll be gaming it up the whole day. I’ll have to divide the time between Uncharted 2 and Ghostbusters. Should be a fun-filled day none the less. I’ll pop up my impressions of Uncharted 2, as well as a review of Ghostbusters, some time tomorrow.
