Bored Tonight

1
Filed under My Personal Life, Randomness

We had a good night, getting through a full disc of My Name is Earl and then watching some Unwrapped, and otherwise hanging out. But eventually Shell fell asleep. Thats usually my cue to pick up my PS3 controller and get my game on.

For some reason, I didnt feel like it tonight. Ive been itchin’ to play Sacred 2 online, but my Ps3 was having more DNS errors today, so that wasn’t going to happen tonight. I played some DS for a bit, and then I read some National Geographic for a bit. I then played around on the interwebs for a bit.

But I am still bored. I dunno…its a very hot, stuffy night. Its raining pretty hard so all the windows are closed. I have a headache. Its 12:00 now, and I don’t really want to go to bed, but I think I’m going to start getting Shell going.

Another Sacred 2 Post

So yeah, Ive been having a blast playing it. My Shadow Warrior is at level 17 right now. I initially started the game on the easiest difficulty, but it started getting lame, so I jumped over to the next difficulty up. Now Im getting money, experience, and items that I was losing out on in the other difficulty. Starting up a new game wasnt difficult, and you get to transfer your character over with all his experience, gold, and items, so that was good. Also, the map remains the same, so all the areas you previously explored are revealed to you. Unfortunately, since it is a new quest, I have to do all the side quests over again. But its all good.

I still havent gotten around to playing online yet. I tend to play more during the day, when none of my friends are on. Hopefully soon I will get to bring my character over to someone elses world.

I also want to say how disappointed I am in the lack of a pause feature. I mean, I have no problem having to access the menu in the open world. It makes it more challenging when you have to ensure you are somewhere safe before you start going through menus to level up or get some new equipment on. But I really, REALLY hate it when a game offers absolutely no pause feature. I mean, Im playing, and lets say the doorbell rings, or Shell needs me to kill a spider. Then Im screwed, because I have to get up and go, and there is no way for me to pause the game so that my ass doesnt get raped in the midst of combat while Im attending to real life. That really frustrates me.

I promise the next Sacred post I write will discuss the co-op aspects of it. Man, it would be so sweet if I could get Shell to get into this game…

PS3 Review- Rag Doll Kung Fu

Yes, I agree…the title sounds strange, weird, and scary. I thought the same thing, and didnt think twice to buy it. However, Sprint was nice this week, and gave it away to anyone who wanted it for free (its downloadable from PSN). Now, regardless of how lame the game sounds, if its free Im going to snag it. And I did. And surprisingly, I was not disappointed.

Let me say this…picture Super Smash Bros, but with funny looking old-school Kung-Fu movie characters as opposed to Nintendo’s favorite lineup, and thats the game. The characters include the Bruce Lee-look alike, the bad ass black guy with a fro, and the old master with the long beard. Theres also a few other characters thrown in, as well as the ability to create your own. Unlike Smash Bros, every character is the same, so the only differences are purely cosmetic.

My biggest (and only) complaint about the game is that there is no online gameplay. This really killed the game, because it is a heck of a lot of fun. As I said, it plays like a simpler version of Smash Bros (if thats possible). You and up to three opponents (either friends at your house or the AI) can duke it out across several stages, playing death matches, King of the Hill, or my personal favorite, the Fish Toss. In the fish toss game, you are trying to throw a fish into a basket while your opponents try and stop you. Hands down the best mode of the game.

Players have a wide range of abilities. Not only is there the expected jump, punch and kick, but you can also grab an opponent and slam or chuck him across the stage. Players can also summon their Chi and release lightning balls at their opponents. Also, players can go hurtling across the screen with crazy flying punches. You can also pick up weapons such as a staff or nunchuck, which is intuitively controlled with the right analog. Also, if you’re low on health, either pick up a powerup of a box of noodles, or if you tilt the controller upside down, the character will float and meditate, restoring his health.

There is also a tutorial and challenge mode, in which a single player can try face the computer at increasing difficulties to try and clear challenges. Also, the game does indeed support trophies, which is extremely nice. This game was a really hidden gem.

Its such a shame that this game does not support online play. If it did, I would be playing it a heck of a lot more. I’ll probably do some challenges to snag some more trophies, but I’ll have to wait until I see Steve next to fully enjoy the great and fun experience that the game offers. Come on now, its free until next week sometime. What are you waiting for?! Its a free game! Just download it already!!!!!!!!!!!

Quickie- Green Day “21st Century Breakdown”

So I got the CD in a day before its release (thanks to Amazon Prime) and Shell and I started listening to it tonight. So far, I definitely enjoy it. I really like where the band has gone and how they have progressed over the years. Im sure a lot of Green Day fans will think Im nuts, but I believe that “American Idiot” was their best album, followed by “Warning”.

21 Century Breakdown sounds a lot like American Idiot, which is good. The songs aren’t short and poppy, but complex, with messages in the lyrics and an awesome musical sound that is anything but short and sweet. The album boasts 18 tracks, with a total run time of about 70 minutes. I was disappointed that there is no insane 9minute long songs like American Idiot’s “Jesus of Suburbia” and “Homecoming”, but the songs are still very good. Like American Idiot, 21st Century Breakdown tells a story…this one is about a young couple adjusting to life at the turn of the century. As I said, I have just started listening to it, and havent really digested much, but so far its a real treat to listen to.

I dont know if it will surpass American Idiot, in fact I dont think they ever will, but they are following the same formula, and I like the new direction the band has chosen to go. I hope they continue to put this much effort into their work, because it pays off in a huge way. They are truly musical geniuses.

The Last Round of the Playoffs Before the Cup

So I got to catch the last five minutes of the Carolina/Boston game, and I was rooting for Carolina. I dont know why, but for some reason, as long as the Rangers arent playing against them, I’ll root for them as well. So I was pleased to see Carolina win it in overtime.

So now the final leg before the Cup is going to be Detroit vs Chicago, and Carolina vs Pittsburg. I would like to see Detroit vs. Carolina in the Cup. I dont really want to see a rematch from last season, with Detroit and Pittsburg.

Im going to try and go out of my way to catch as much of the Carolina/Pittsburg series as possible. I want to see Crosby cry.

Gumbo

So I made my first attempt at making gumbo today. I had never had it before, but it sounded too good to be true. I mean, a bunch of meat and veggies cooked with spicy seasonings and then dumped on top of rice sounds delicious! So I looked around online at many different recipes to get an idea of what goes into it, and then I decided to make it myself.

I made an interesting mixture of shrimp, clams, and sausage, and then mixed it with onions, peppers, and okra, I also threw in some secret seasonings and spices, and used a roux to help thicken it all up. I was pleased with how it came out for the most part. The taste was awesome, especially when served a top a bed of white rice. I also liked the level of spice, but might try and make it a little hotter next time. The only thing I did bad was kill the shrimp and clams. We went out for the day, so I threw everything in at the beginning. The shrimp shunk down to smaller than popcorn shrimp size, and my clams nearly disenergrated. Next time around, those two things are going in much later.

I will probably eventually post up my recipe, but not until Im satisfied. Maybe next time.

Wedding Registery Not as Fun as I Imagined

So Shell and I hit up BB&B today for our wedding registery. I was looking forward to grabbing a gun and running around the store scanning random crap. However, my dreams were soon dashed.

BB&B is very professional, and you are assigned a “tour guide” of the store. This lady basically gave us a full-blown tour of the store, showing us every item on every aisle. It was ridiculous. The best was when she tried getting us to register a melon baller and apple corer. It was over two hours, and we didnt even finish half the store. The other half will be tomorrow night at 7pm, which is when we made our appointment for.

Im not a big fan. I mean, she was helpful in some respects, but she was constantly trying to upsell to the very best item for each thing, and I wasn’t looking forward to asking people for twelve $40 plates…that would have been our entire registery!!!

So yeah, its not fun. Its a chore. Now that I know what to expect, tomorrow wont be as bad.

Lost is Over For the Season

Last night was the season finale, and what a finale it was. As I have said, this past season was awesome, and really made up for the somewhat lame third and fourth seasons. The finale had us all going crazy at the end.

So the whole thing with Locke is very odd. It would seem that the guy who Jacob was talking to at the beginning is actually now in Locke’s body, but Locke’s body is dead on the beach. So either there was a space/time continum mishap and both Locke’s can exist at the same place and time, or this guy has the ability to assume the appearance of Locke. Its very odd. I look forward to next season, even though it wont happen until 2010.

Explanation of Combat Arts/Aspects/Skills in Sacred 2

Now that Ive put more time into it, Im really getting into it. I have finally figured out how to use abilities. As I mentioned, it is a complex process, and the instruction manual tells very little. However, after reading up on discussion boards and experimenting, I figured it out for the most part, at the most basic level.

Each character in the game is assigned three “aspects”. These aspects  are also called skill trees, as each one contains five individual combart arts (special moves/magic) that can be learned. Thus, each character can learn up to fifteen moves. So when you level up, you get the opportunity to assign points to the aspect  itself, which makes all corresponding combat arts stronger (more damage, shorter regen time, etc.)

I’ll use my Shadow Warrior (undead warrior) as an example. He has three aspects- Death Warrior, Malevolent Champion, and Astral Lord. Death Warrior combat arts are all about doing massive close-range combat damage. Malevolent Champion skills are close-range combat moves that are not as massive, but quick. The Astral Lord combat arts are all the cool undead skills such as summoning skeleton helpers and arrow-firing towers.

Each character can learn up to ten skills, which are additional “areas of proficiency.” The character’s three aspects can be in there, as well as stuff like “sword use”, ” bow use”, “mount riding”, and “blacksmithing.” All of these skills raise the characters ability to perform well in these activities. So when my character levels up, I can use my skill points to upgrade any of my three aspects, which in turn strengthens the five corresponding combat arts.

Now to learn each individual combat art requires you to find the rune of that skill during combat, and then use it. The good thing is that these runes are easy to come by, as once I figured all this out, I had at least two of each in my inventory. Enemies drop these runes like crazy. So you figure out what combat art you want to learn, then see if you have the rune. If you do, then you use it, and blam…you can now use that combat art.

Now heres the interesting thing. There is no sense of mana/magicka/mp in the game…each aspect has its own separate recharge rate. So if I was to use a combat art from Astral Lord, I would have to wait until Astral Lord was fully recharged to use another Astral Lord skill. In the meanwhile, I could still use combat arts from Death Warrior or Malevolent Champion, so long as they were recharged. In this respect, it is recommended that you dont waste runes and such leveling up all the skills, but stick to a base two or three in each set (I’ll explain another reason why later in the post).

Heres one of the coolest aspects of combat arts…not only do you level them up with more runes, but you can also modify them. Let me give you an example. Under Astral Lord, there is a combat art called Nether Allegiance. This combat art summons two skeletons to fight with you in battle until they are defeated or you send them back. There are three modification categories for each combat art, and each category has two abilities, and you choose one. So with Nether Allegiance, the first option was either “skeletons do more damage” or “summon one additional skeleton.” I chose the latter, so when I use that skill now, three skeletons show up instead of two. Then when I unlocked the second modification, the two options were “skeletons have better shields” or “summon yet another skeleton.” I thought three was enough, so I decided to make them tougher by giving them better shields. There are other examples also, as Ive seen that the fireball the Inquisitor (Wizard) casts can be modified to either be one huge fireball, or a series of smaller fireballs. This was a very interesting aspect of the game. So you assign points to aspects to make all the corresponding combat arts stronger, and use runes to learn and strengthen individual combat arts. Occasionally, you unlock the ability to modify these combat arts to really alter them and make them better. Also, there is a way to create “combos” in which you can make up to four combinations of different skills, but I havent delved into that yet.

Heres the thing with runes…not only do you find them, but you can also buy/trade them from a rune master. So all the unused runes you have, and you will have a lot, you can trade to him/her for runes for combat arts you actually use. So if you only use two combat arts from Astral Lord, you would be able to trade the three other runes to this guy for one of the two you actually use.

As I said, its a complex system, and Im sure I didnt fully explain everything, but I think I did a pretty close job of nailing it on the head. As I said previously, its difficult to master, but once you have some idea of whats going on, you feel a lot better. I was so relieved when I got my level 11 Shadow Warrior to finally use his first skill.

UPDATE:

I recently wrote a character build guide for the Shadow Warrior and High Elf . I will be creating more character build guides in the near future for the other characters.

Pittsburg Advances…

So as of tonight, Pittsburg advanced to the Conference finals. They will play either Boston or Carolina, depending on who wins tomorrow night.

Im a bit upset. I hate Crosby, and I hate Pittsburg. I dont know why…most Ranger fans hate either the Devils or Islanders or Phillies, but not many hate Pittsburg the most…but I do. I was rooting for Washington to topple Pittsburg even though it was Washington who knocked the Rangers out. Plus I think Ovechkin is the superior player to Crosby. But thats another story.

In a way, I would love to see Pittsburg make it to the Cup again, just to be squashed by Detroit again. That would be sweet…to see Crosby in utter dismay at an exact replica of last season. We shall see what happens.

First Impressions of Sacred 2 PS3

Ok, so Ive put a few hours into the game, so I feel like Im ready to give my first impressions.

The game rocks.

Its much more than I anticipated. Its huge…the world map is quite a formidable thing to view, and where I am now seems so insignificant compared to the rest of the map. I can see how someone can play this game to level 200 with such a huge and beautiful playground. The game is wonderfully done graphic-wise, though it loses some of that as you zoom out. Luckily I prefer to play zoomed in, so I get plenty of visual goodness.

One of my biggest complaints so far has to do with the text size. It is ridiculously small, and the colors chosen tend to clash or blend in with the background, making it difficult to see and read. This is frustrating, as its hard for me to see the name of items I pick up or how much experience I gain for defeating a monster.

I expected the game to be similar to games such as Baldurs Gate and Champions of Norrath, and while the game meets these expectations, it also blows past them with a complex system for special moves, called combat arts. This is a very complex system to master, and I have yet to do so. However, I can tell already that it is going to be awesome, once I fully understand how to upgrade and level up these abilities.

I initially started a game as a Dryad, but I was not feeling it. I re-started with the Shadow Warrior, who is a heavy melee fighter, and have been happy ever since. I think he is a good starting character to use in order to get accustomed to the world of Sacred 2.

I have not played the game online yet, so that part will wait until my fuller review. I intend on writing another more in-depth post once I get some more gametime in and I understand the combat arts more. Until then, Im simply going to say that if you are a fan of hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers, then this game is key. A huge world to explore, over 600 quests to partake in, the ability to level your character up to at least 200, and the online drop in/drop out co-op with voice chat are all very, very good reasons why any RPG fan should check Sacred 2 out. And as I said, if you loved Baldurs Gate and Champions of Norrath, then dont even rent the game first…JUST BUY IT!!!

Sacred 2 in the House!!!

So I just returned from Gamestop with Sacred 2. Ended up costing me $11 out of pocket, after Gamestop store credit (from trading in games) and gift cards (thanks to Liss for an awesome b-day present.) It is installed in my PS3 and ready to rock. It has a huge update and download though. I had to go back and delete some demos and old save files in order to get the game running.

I’ll wait an hour or two until the ladies go to bed, then I’ll be in gaming paradise. The only question now is what character to play. The dryad is looking interesting…

The Critic

Ahhh, this brought back some funny memories. While flicking through the TV channels at my parents house tonight I stumbled upon re-runs of the animated series The Critic starring Jon Lovitz. I watched two episodes, and loved it.

The show was about a film critic who pretty much hated all movies. All the movies portrayed in the movie were spoofs of other movies, so its a given that he will poke fun at them. One of the best was Arnold Swatzernager as Mrs. Doubtfire, and the wife is like “I know its you, my husband, dressed as an old lady” and Arnold is like “it is not me.” Great stuff.

I own the series on DVD, but havent watched it in several years. Its a really funny show, and was created by some of the minds from The Simpsons. It was great to watch it again, and now Im thinking of watching the series on DVD all over again!

Shell’s mom came up from South Carolina today, and came bearing gifts…in the way of Cheerwine!!!

Cheerwine is the best soda ever made. Its a very cherry-flavored cola, and blows Cherry Coke and Pepsi away. Its totally delicious! The saddest part is that its only available down south, so I have to rely on Momma Hena (Shell’s mom) to resupply my depleted stocks.
