Yes, I agree…the title sounds strange, weird, and scary. I thought the same thing, and didnt think twice to buy it. However, Sprint was nice this week, and gave it away to anyone who wanted it for free (its downloadable from PSN). Now, regardless of how lame the game sounds, if its free Im going to snag it. And I did. And surprisingly, I was not disappointed.
Let me say this…picture Super Smash Bros, but with funny looking old-school Kung-Fu movie characters as opposed to Nintendo’s favorite lineup, and thats the game. The characters include the Bruce Lee-look alike, the bad ass black guy with a fro, and the old master with the long beard. Theres also a few other characters thrown in, as well as the ability to create your own. Unlike Smash Bros, every character is the same, so the only differences are purely cosmetic.
My biggest (and only) complaint about the game is that there is no online gameplay. This really killed the game, because it is a heck of a lot of fun. As I said, it plays like a simpler version of Smash Bros (if thats possible). You and up to three opponents (either friends at your house or the AI) can duke it out across several stages, playing death matches, King of the Hill, or my personal favorite, the Fish Toss. In the fish toss game, you are trying to throw a fish into a basket while your opponents try and stop you. Hands down the best mode of the game.
Players have a wide range of abilities. Not only is there the expected jump, punch and kick, but you can also grab an opponent and slam or chuck him across the stage. Players can also summon their Chi and release lightning balls at their opponents. Also, players can go hurtling across the screen with crazy flying punches. You can also pick up weapons such as a staff or nunchuck, which is intuitively controlled with the right analog. Also, if you’re low on health, either pick up a powerup of a box of noodles, or if you tilt the controller upside down, the character will float and meditate, restoring his health.
There is also a tutorial and challenge mode, in which a single player can try face the computer at increasing difficulties to try and clear challenges. Also, the game does indeed support trophies, which is extremely nice. This game was a really hidden gem.
Its such a shame that this game does not support online play. If it did, I would be playing it a heck of a lot more. I’ll probably do some challenges to snag some more trophies, but I’ll have to wait until I see Steve next to fully enjoy the great and fun experience that the game offers. Come on now, its free until next week sometime. What are you waiting for?! Its a free game! Just download it already!!!!!!!!!!!
