So I went to pick up my little kitty Loki tonight, and apparently he wanted no part of that. He scratched my nose, and Shell made me put a bandaid on. Now I look like a fool. Im so glad I dont have to go to school or work tomorrow…

Hooked on Sudoku
So I rented Brain Age 2 for the DS through Gamefly, and one of the games attached to it is sudoku. I had never tried it before since Im afraid of numbers, and it seemed really complex. However, its a lot of fun. I really enjoy doing them, and I think that even after I send the game back, I’ll either buy a book or play them online or something.
Its definitely a great brain-teaser.
Curried Pork
So I made some curried pork yesterday. We had curried chicken once, and it was very tasty. This was not as “spicy” as that one was. It was still tasty.
Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 lbs pork roast
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 small/medium yellow onion
- 1 cup carrots, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme, crushed
- 14 1/2 oz canned diced tomatoes, drained
- 14oz beef broth
- 1 bay leaf
Procedure
1. Place the onion, carrot, and garlic in the bottom of crock pot
2. Place the pork roast on top of the vegetables
3. Mix ginger, curry, turmeric, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. Then rub the seasoning mixture into the pork roast
4. Add the tomatoes, broth, and thyme on top of meat. Then place bay leaf on top of meat.
5. Place cover on crock pot. Cook on low for 8 hour, or high or 4 hours.
6. Remove bay leaf from crock pot before serving
7. Serves 4-6
To Make Gravy:
1. After pork is done, ladle 1 cup juice from the crock pot to a pot on the stove.
2. Add 1/2 cup cold water and 1/4 cup flour to the pot
3. Turn heat to medium, and stir in the ingredients until reaches a gravy-like constiency (about 1-2 minutes)
The World According to the Simpsons
So now that Brisingr is finished, I’m moving on to a book Cara got me for my birthday. Its basically a book about how the Simpsons is more than just a simple cartoon, as it borrows a lot from real life social aspects. This is something I already agree with, as I love the idea of using the Simpsons to teach classes.
Im looking forward to getting into this book. Im sure there is a lot I never caught thoughout the series that will be revealed as I read.
The End of the Rangers Season…
Well, its over. They put up a valiant battle tonight, and Lundqvist was in top form, but it was not enough, and they lost 1-2. So the Rangers go home and the Caps advance. I hope Boston creams them next round.
Well, like I say every year, there’s always next year. In the end, I’m just happy they at least made it to the playoffs.
Thanks for a great season guys. See ya next year!
Semester Almost Over
So today was my last college class of the semester. I still have a few things going on in my online class, which ends May 5. But for the first time Im way ahead of schedule, and all the projects that are due May 5th are already done and submitted. Very nice!
The summer starts May 26 for me. I’ll be having classes Mon-Fri from 9:30-10:50. Thats going to stink.
Beer
So over the past few years, Ive finally acquired a taste for beer. I like a lot of different kinds. Some of my favorites are:
- Tecate
- Sam Adams Oktoberfest
- Spaten
- Sam Adams Boston Lager
- Dos Equis
- Corona
- Heineken
- Coors Lite
Drinking the last Spaten right now. Next up is Sams.
Lets Go Rangers
This is it… game 7.
The winner goes on to the next round. The loser goes home.
The Rangers are up 1-0 right now. Lets keep this up.
Best Game Ever???
There is a new game in development called Zootfly.
Basically, you play as Mr. T fighting Nazis.
‘Nuff said.
OH Fest ’09
So Shell and I headed to Oneonta on Saturday for OH Fest, which is a annual day-long festival in the town of Oneonta. It is organized by SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick college, and each year ends with a couple of good bands. This year’s lineup was a Journey tribute band, some rapper from The Roots, the Ataris, and Eve 6.
We went to Brooks first, which was amazing. I really missed that place and their delicious ribs and sauce…but I digress. We got to the concert just as the Journey band was starting up. So we hung around for that, and then the guy from the Roots came out and pissed me off. He was just sitting up there beat-boxing, and it was extremely lame. People got bored and started talking and ignoring him, which got him upset. He began to interrupt his own songs by saying things like “hey guys, you aren’t listening. It’s really me making these sounds, not a machine!” Shell and I decided to wander around and get away from him.
We then waiting on line for at least a 1/2 hour for ice cream from a truck. As we waiting in line, the beat-boxer went away and the Ataris came out. We got our ice cream and sat on the grass to listen. They were very good. They played a few songs I knew from End is Forever and So Long, Astoria.
After they played, the beat-box deuche was back, so we left and skipped out on Eve 6. It was getting later by that time, and we wanted to get home and beat the crowds of drunk college kids. On the way out, they attacked Shell’s car like a horde of zombies. One guy even yelled, “if you get any closer I’ll knock off your mirror!”
We were glad to be on our way home.
Signs of Summer
As if the hot 80+Â degree days wasn’t enough to tell me that summer was here, Shell brought home some corn on the cob and made up the first batch tonight. She ended up grilling it on our indoor grill, and it was delicious! I love corn on the cob, but I hate cleaning it out of my teeth…
Brooks BBQ
I was just on the website for Brooks BBQ, and I saw that you can now order from their online website. I highly suggest doing so.
Brooks bbq sauce is awesome. Its a very sweet sauce, which I love. Brooks has some of the best ribs I’ve ever had. Its one of Oneonta’s best kept secrets, and you can tell since they cater all over New York. Ive seen churches up here in Albany holding weekend cookouts featuring Brooks chicken.
So go ahead and check out the website, and order a bottle of sauce. You wont regret it.
Student Teaching- Day Forty-Five
So this is it. This is the end. Today was the last day.
We didnt do anything. Just sat back and watched our teacher teach one last time. It was good to watch him again. Its been me doing the teaching for so long that it was interesting to see how he goes about it.
The big thing is that he covers less material in a day then I would, because he has a way of really engaging the kids and getting them to work things out on their own. I can do that to a degree, but not to the extent that he can. It is really cool.
I’ll miss all the kids. One of the boys in my fourth period class thought that we were lying and refused to believe that we were leaving. Then a girl asked “are you going to miss us?” and another girl said, “hes not going to miss our class”, and then I assured them that I would. Which I honestly will. Sure, they were annoying and a headache, but I still thought they were awesome. Fifth period was the worst, because I liked them the most. It was sad to see that group go.
So yeah, it was an overall great experience. The teacher was awesome, and I dont think I could have asked for a better one. The school itself was new and up to date, and the kids were a really good group…they really were Albany’s finest.
I am now anxious to see where I end up for next semester. Will find out in two weeks…
Student Teaching- Day Forty-Four
So today was the second to last day at school. Now that the kids know we will be leaving soon, they are all going crazy over how much they will miss us. And I’ll miss them.
We played a game with fourth and fifth period today. Fourth period were the usual loud, rambuncious punks, but fifth was great. I’ll really miss them. One girl threw her bandana from her hair around her neck and ran around the room, saying she was supergirl. Then another girl kept dancing in the front of the room. They are such great kids, and I’ll miss them the most. Its definitely going to be a sad day tomorrow.
We also talked to my teacher a bit today about the overall experience. Reflecting on it, it was good. Not only was the school good, but the teacher was a great guy. He let us do what we wanted to do, and we learned from our mistakes. Theres no better way to learn than through experience. Not only was he a good mentor, but he also knew his material, and I respected him for that. Hes the kind of teacher I would like to be…somewhat laid back, knowledgable, and in love with what he does. I really did learn a lot from him.
Three Down, One to Go…
So the Rangers beat Washington again last night, thus they lead the series 3-1. They need one more win to end it. I think its going to happen.
Student Teaching- Day Forty-Three
So today was the big day…my last lesson. It went really well.
As I mentioned, I planned a lesson on the emergence of American painting. Basically, most early American painters painted like British artists, simply because America was so new and didnt really have its own culture yet. But eventually some painters began painting differnet things than British, and an American style of painting was born.
Basically I showed the kids a bunch of different paintings depicting the different themes of American art, and contrasted it to the themes present in British art. For example, Americans were painting pictures of Native Americans, American landscapes and nature, and everyday common people, while the British were painting portraits of nobility, and also creating work based on history, mythology, and religion.
So basically I explained the differences and showed them examples of the paintings, so that they could explain to me why it was American. At the end I had a mini test, where I had a mixture of American and British paintings up and asked the kids to tell me which were which based on the themes the paintings contained.
They all did very well, were actively engaged, and seemed to genuinely enjoy it. I know both my teacher and Supervisor enjoyed it as well. It was a great lesson to end my student teaching with.
Student Teaching- Day Forty-Two
A little late, but nothing too big happened.
Tuesday was an awards day for the kids. So first period was the honor roll breakfast. Since my first period class is the honors class, twenty of the twenty-five kids in that class left, so I had to watch five of them while my teacher and the others went down for some free breakfast.
Period four was an awards ceremony, where the entire seventh grade class went down to the auditorium and the teachers gave out awards based on student performance in class. It was pretty lame.
Our teacher let us book out early since the class got to watch Bolt periods five and six.
Student Teaching- Day Forty-One
Well this is it…the start of my last week of student teaching. Today wasnt too bad. Our teacher had the kids do a study guide, so that was pretty straight forward. The last two classes were off the wall, which probably had to do with the fact that they just got back from Spring Break. Hopefully they will calm down within a day or two.
So the way the schedule is looking, I will only be teaching one last lesson on Wednesday. There is an awards ceremony on Tuesday, and the kids have to play a review game with the information from the study guide on Thursday, and Friday is our last day, so Wednesday is the last actual lesson we will teach. Also, it will be our last observation with our Supervisor.
Based on that and the fact that the class wont actually start learning until next week, our teacher told us to just pick any topic from the chapter and go into a full detail lesson. The chapter is on social reform in America in the 1800s, and I decided to do my lesson on the emergence of the American style of art. My hope is that the lesson will be more like an art history class, where I will be able to talk about this shift from traditional European art themes to that which American artists began doing. My goal is for the students to be able to identify the key themes of early American art, and be able to distinguish American and British art based on the presence or absence of these themes. Should be pretty straightforward, but a lot of fun.
Im really excited to get this planned out and present it. I have the honors students, so I feel that I will be able to do something this different with them, and they will get it.
On a sad note, our teacher told the class that this was our last week. They were all upset. I am too. I’ll miss them, from the cool kids to the annoying ones.
Game Over?!
So I was playing through Fallout 3 last night. This is one of the few games where I did not look at any online guides/faq’s at all…I never ran into any problems or tight corners. So I wasnt aware that I was on the last mission for the main story. Anywho, so I go into the final room of the game (not knowing it was) and kill the “boss”, after which I save the game. I then soon after realize that this is it…this is the end of the game. Now my only save was in the room, as was my last auto save. I try and leave the room, but the doors are locked. Im stuck at the end of the game, and theres no way for me to go back out and continue exploring and leveling and just messing around. Its game over, man!
I was really upset by this. I think its safe to say that I plugged in at least 30+ hours into Fallout 3 since Ive had it. There was so much more I wanted to do. My character was only at level 18, and had not hit the cap yet. There were a ton of places still to explore, and plenty of side missions to take on and complete. I was so upset over the fact that there is no way for me to go back and continue playing around.
Needless to say, I started the game over this morning. It was such a fun game, funner than Oblivion, that I havent had my fix yet, even though I technically beat the game. Now I must go back…
