Co-Op Goodness with Lord of the Rings Conquest

So Steve got Lord of the Rings Conquest in from Gamefly, and we got to play through some of the bad guy campaign online tonight. When I first got it, Steve had happen to come up that week. We played several hours through the entire good guy campaign. It was a blast. Its a really basic, fun hack and slash game. Not much thought or anything- just playing as a character in Middle-Earth, either killing orcs or men. Its sort of a combination of Star Wars Battlefront and Dynasty Warriors in terms of gameplay. I love it, and its even more fun when played online.

Student Teaching- Day Twenty-Two

Today was an alright day, but I think the kids are starting to get “spring fever.”

We had a parent teacher conference today. The student in question is not in my classes, so I wasnt familiar with her. Apparently, her biggest problem is that she spends all her time in class talking to boys, and has “boys on the brain”, as her mom says. I always hate these conferences, because eventually they bring the student in, and the parent and student go at it, and the student is never comfortable, and wont talk or explain themselves, and eventually run off crying. Its one of the aspects of the job Im not looking forward to.

My class went well today, for the most part. Theres still a few chatty girls in there who wont stop for anything. Tomorrow will be the last lesson, and then we will give them a test on Thursday. I just finished writing up the test a few minutes ago. Its such an easy straight forward test, but students still do bad on them. They are lucky that the teacher accepts test corrections.

Fifth period was ridiculous. One of the students has been off the wall for weeks, due to extreme family issues. Knowing what happened, I can understand why she acts the way she does, but its not cool, especially when it rubs off on the other kids. Then another girl was off the hook, and it was due to “woman problems.” They are at that age in 7th grade where some of them begin to go through that stage in their lives, and it makes them nuts.

I still think the coming of spring has a lot to do with the kid recent craziness. But despite how crazy they are, I will still miss them when its done next month.

Repo TV Show

So Shell and me spent like 3 hours tonight watching this “reality show” about repo men, on Tru-TV. It was pretty classic, seeing all these scumbags trying to stop these other scumbags from taking their cars. One of the repo people is this huge ugly lady, and she was running around in this fairy dress. Im sorry, but if I walked outside, and saw some lady in a big billowy dress trying to tow my car, Im definitely going to be all confused.

The best one was where they had this midget tag along with them. The midget was supposedly a fan of the show, and they let him come along for one of the jobs. They told him to stay in the car, but this little guy was running around causing all sorts of chaos and making things tough.

It was great to watch, until I caught something at the beginning of an episode. It said something like “the following are all based on actual events.” I was like “dammit, this show was sooo cool until I realized that they just re-enact what happens.”

Ive lost all faith in reality TV, which isnt much, since I didnt have any in the first place. The only reality show I will watch and support is American Gladiators.

Wolf, where art thou???

Student Teaching- Day Twenty-One

Today went pretty good. I had created three different worksheets with primary source documents, and that took up the whole class time, which was good. The first two were pretty basic and easy, and the third one was a bit more challenging, and took up the majority of their time.

For the team teaching, we did the class on pirates. The kids definitely enjoyed it, but we found out that guided notes were not the best way to go. The kids wasted way too much time asking us to constantly repeat ourselves as we went through the guided notes. If I was to ever do that again, I would have a section set aside where I could write what I wanted them to write, so they could just copy it instead of having them keep asking me to repeat it.

Its funny. The kids moan and complain about the primary sources, yet they always tell me they prefer it to taking notes. I think its a good break, but I think that using the documents should always be a supplement, and should not replace an actual lesson. Ive noticed that without proper notes, the students have no way of studying. Thus, even if you try and teach them by doing different, innovative ideas every day, that doesnt mean the information will stick. Just because they have fun doesnt mean they understand what they are doing. Thus, I will always use PSD whenever possible, but not at the expense of a physical lesson with at least some kind of notes which they can leave the class with.

Cheapskates

Im getting sick of the jerks who come in to work these days. Im talking about the people who come in, and give a 10% tip. Ive asked the other servers, and its been happening to them too. So its not just that I smell bad…its that people are cheap.

Dont get me wrong, I know times are hard in the country and all right now. But if you cant afford to leave a decent tip, then DONT GO OUT TO DINNER!!! Holy crap! It pisses me off when I get freakin’ $4.00 on a $40-$50 order. I mean, why should I even work?! Dont these people realise that I get paid $3.00 an hour?! I mean, the tip IS my paycheck. Also, half the time, I dont even see that $3.00 an hour, because a lot of the time I get a void paycheck, because the amount I get taxed on in tips costs me more than my hourly wage for the pay period.

People, listen. Its customary to leave at least 18% tip. If you suck at math, pull out your cell phone, go to the tip calculator under the tools section, punch in the numbers, and pay up. And if times are so hard that you cant go out anymore, than dont go out. Dont screw over others.

As I said, Shell and I know how it is. We used to go out once a week. But you know what? Times are hard, so we STOPPED GOING OUT. But when we do go out on occassion, we still leave at least the customary tip, sometimes more. I feel for servers, since I am one, and will not screw one over just because Im broke. Sorry, but if I cant afford a meal and to pay a server to take my order, bring me my food, and clean up after me, then I wont go out.

‘Nuff said.

Comedy Central Roast of Larry the Cable Guy

I worked a double shift at the Applebees today, but I was happy that I got home just in time to catch the start of the Roast. I look forward to the Roasts, as they are always funny. Last years with Bob Sagat was good, but it was missing key people, particularly Lisa Lamponeli. I was glad to see she was back for this one, and as Roast-Master at that. She is always classic.
The whole thing was good. I hate Larry the Cable Guy, and all those redneck comics, so it was a blast to see everyone making fun of him. I was surprised to see that Gary Busey was there. Im still wondering whether he is really crazy and brain damaged, or if hes just a good actor. Its hard to tell. Regardless of which, he was very funny.

Actually, everyone was good. Even the non-comics, like the football player, Toby Keith, and the lady who played Marsha Brady. It was better than last year, where Jon Lovitz and Norm MacDonald, two great comics in my eyes, relativly sucked ass. I mean, Gary Busey made more sense than Norm MacDonald did last year, and thats pretty sad.

If you missed it, knowing Comedy Central, they will show re-runs of it for the next year, so Im sure you can catch it at some point. I always recommend catching the Roasts, and this one is no different.

We went to Shell’s aunts house for a St. Pattys Day dinner tonight. It was deliciously awesome. She made a really banging corned beef, as well as the cabbage, potatoes, and carrots. There was also Irish soda bread to be had, but it had some funky seeds in it that I didnt like.

Overall, it was a tasty dinner. The good news is that Shell bought a corned beef at the store today, so I’ll be cooking that up come Tuesday.

New Vitamin Water Flavors

I love Vitamin Water. Actually, there is one thing I hate about it…the price. Its like over $1 for a freaken little bottle. Its too costly for me to drink it daily, but if I had like a million dollars, I totally would.

Anywho, the last new flavor was the XXX berry. It was good. Then there was a long time, Id say well over a year, when there were no new flavors. Today Shell came back from food shopping with two new ones… Tranquilo (Tamarind-Pineapple) and Sync (Berry-Cherry). Both were good. I think the Berry-Cherry is the best one they made yet. My other favorites are the lemon-lime and orange. Try ‘em out if you see them.

Hmmm…I cannnot find any pics on the internets. I’ll take a pic with my camera and post it later.

Rats Rule?

So Ive been living up here in Albany for almost a year, and I finally went to my first River Rats game tonight. The River Rats were at one point the New Jersey Devils farm team, but apparently they are now the Carolina Hurricanes team instead. It was pretty cheap…the tickets were $17. Parking was $3. Beer was either $5.50 or $6.50, depending on what you drank. I went for a Heineken. I had my first one…back in the day…and hated it. But my beer palate is developing, and I enjoyed it tonight.

As for the game itself, it was fun. They ended up losing 4-1, and the other team (the Pittsburg Penguin’s farm team from Scranton) were by far the superior team. Even the shots on goal were embarassing. The Penguins had 40-something, and the Rats only had 20-something. The first two periods were rough, but the Rats played a lot better in the third, but not good enough.

There was also plenty of entertainment, as the two Rats mascots, Rowdy and Rudey, and some dancing chicken made frequent appearances. Plus there were the “Ice Mice”, who were the first hockey cheerleaders I had ever seen. Throw in some guy getting fired from a slingshot across the ice into some inflatable bowling pins, and it was a good time all around.
All in all, it was a fun, cheap hockey experience. I would definitely like to go again, as it wasnt too costly at all, and a heck of a lot of fun. Its a good way to get my hockey fix.

WWE Legends for PS3 is not quite so…legendary?

So the demo came out last night for the new WWE game. Its made by THQ, who made the Smackdown vs. Raw games which I so love. So I thought this game would rock, since it was the same company, just with a very classic roster (ex- Hulk, Andre, Ultimate Warrior, etc.) The demo lets you play as either Hulk or Andre.

I wasnt very pleased with it. The controls suck. They are totally different from SvR, and dumbed down to something that reminds me of an old-school Sega WWF game. For example, you hit square to punch, and x to grapple, and the longer you hold the buttons, the stronger the move. The right analog isnt even used, and I didnt even see any taunts anywhere.

On the plus side, the graphics are improved, in my opinion. Of course, the roster itself is a big seller. However, the controls really turned me off.

I was originally contemplating picking this game up, but now I am avoiding it at all costs.

I guess I can put it under here. Im currently reading the Watchmen graphic novel from the 80s. So far, the movie has stayed pretty true to the comic, and in many cases, matched the dialogue word for word. I look forward to finishing it and comparing the two.

Student Teaching- Day Twenty

So today was interesting. Third period we had to go to the home ec room and help the math teacher finish baking cookies. I guess for her math class, she had the kids bake cookies, and when the period ended they were not ready yet. So my partner and I were called in to finish bake and help clean up. Let me tell you, there were some ridiculous cookies. One group of boys made a super-chocolately batch. What I think they did was that they just dumped the chocolate chips on top of the batter and didnt mix it in, because that batch had super-chocolatey cookies, and their next batch had none. Also, it was sooo chocolately that it kind of just melted away the center of the cookie, so they all fell apart. But they were tasty. Another group got lazy 1/2 way through and decided to just stop mixing the batter and just bake it, so their cookies were full of unmixed flour. It was gross.

My class went well. The kids behaved for the most part as I gave my lecture. They are also starting to participate more and more. A few kids who never did are starting to talk more during class. A few talk, but to themselves rather than offer anything relevant to the class, and I continue to have to talk to them. But kids will be kids, is the way I see them.

Team-teaching went well, where we had the kids get into pairs and read short biographies of members from the Corps of Discovery (Lewis and Clark) and answer questions based on that. Those kids are good as long as you keep them engaged. Unlike the other period, they behave better in groups then when on their own, in a lecture-setting.

Monday we get observed as team-teachers. We plan on teaching fifth period about pirates, since America had to deal with several African pirate countries in the early 1800s. I think that will keep them interested, and it should prove a good lesson. We will have them present their image of pirates, then tell them about these particular pirates, and then go into how pirates are still around today. It should be fun.

So today was interesting. The teacher was out, and we had a substitute. What was odd was that I knew the sub…it was one of the girls that are in my education program at the school!!! Apparently, which I didnt know, is that you can substitute teach as long as your in a Graduate School program…you dont need a degree or anything. That was weird, and nuts.

My class was not as bad as yesterday. I said nuts to the horseshoe shape, and they were back in their normal seats. A few still keep talking, but it doesnt matter how many times I stop and talk to them…they just keep doing it. I think its one of those things you just have to accept…kids that age will always be a bit chatty. They dont disrupt the class…just me.

The team-teaching period went well. The kids were very funny. We tried to have them create a list of items they would bring with them if they were traveling from New York to California in the 1800s (a la Lewis and Clark.) Of course, we had some ridiculous answers. One kid in particular wanted to bring an AK-47, rocket launcher, and mortars. Even though I told him they werent invented then, he insisted that he would bring an inventor like Franklin or Edison with him to invent it. One girl wanted to bring Spider-Man, and another wanted to bring a “handsome, rich man.” A few kids caught on, and brought tents, extra clothes, and other camping and survival supplies.

That class is a lot easier to control. Yeah, they get out of hand sometimes, but there are only 12 of them, and with the two of us team-teaching, we can keep them under control when they lose it every now and then. I really enjoy that class. They are a great bunch of kids.

Monday I will be getting my third observation (as long as the Supervisor shows up.)

Today, I tried to arrange the kids desks in a horseshoe design. Also, instead of using traditional notes, I tried to get them to fill out a chart of sorts. It failed. The kids were extremely chatty and rude today with the new seating arrangements. Also, they didnt seem to be catching on with the chart. So tomorrow, its back to notes, the standard way.

Fifth period was team-teached again, and that went better. My partner designed twelve short biographies about individuals who were involved with the Louisiana Purchase, and the kids took turns reading each one and answering short questions individually. That went well. Most of the kids enjoyed it, though when I asked them what they thought about it, one kid said he didnt like it, and told me that he prefers notes where things are explained to him rather than reading on his own. I still think traditional notes are the best way to go. The students are not used to these new, unique teaching methods, and I dont think the information sticks with them as well. My partner wants to do another special in-class assignment with them again tomorrow, and I dont know. I dont think that the kids get as much out of it. I think its ok once in awhile, but not back to back like this. Well, we will see how it goes tomorrow.

Watchmen- The Movie

Let me start off by saying that no, I have not read the graphic novel. So I walked into the theater oblivious to any background story on the movie. All I knew going in was that the blue dude was the only one with any powers, and that the guy with the sock over his head was some kind of detective.

The movie was…amazing. From a standalone sense, as in not referencing it to the graphic novel, it was great. Its up there as one of my favorite comic movies of all time. It was so unique, and unlike any I had seen yet. It was extremely dark…darker than Dark Knight was. Also, it was deep, as in the story is extremely complex and thought-provoking. Lets just say theres more to it than a team of heroes uniting to save the world.

One of my favorite aspects of the movie was the idea of an alternate history. The movie takes place during the Cold War, with an impending nuclear war between America and the Soviet Union. Using this as a backdrop, you see several historical figures as they weed their way into the story…JFK, Castro, Kissinger…one of the best parts is that Nixon is President, and working on his fifth term! Also, the soundtrack was great, and really fit the feel of the movie. The opening credits, which played with Bob Dylan’s “Times Are Changing” (or whatever its called) really set a tone for the movie, and told a large background story just through the song and still images.

It was great. It was amazing. It was fantastic. It was so awesome that on the way out of the theater I stopped at Barnes & Noble and purchased the graphic novel. I will now read it, while the movie is still fresh in my head, and make some comparissions and contrasts at a later date.

Anywho, this movie is great. I think anyone would like it. It doesnt matter if you didnt read the comic…the story is told very well through the movie. You wont be disappointed.

So today the kids had their Math Regents, so I missed my class. However, for the 5th period class, which is a small regents-only class, my partner and I team-teached for the first time. It went very well.

Basically the idea of team teaching is for both teachers to get into a comfortable flow and order, where everything works out smoothly, and one person does not overshadow the other. I think we accomplished this pretty darn well. I started up, then gave him control, then he gave me back control, then I gave him back control to end the lesson. I think the kids liked it, as it was different, and hearing both of us talk is probably better than listening to just one person. Also, we are able to help each other, where if he forgets to mention something I can jump in, or he can add something to what I just said.

We have a good balance together, and we worked well. As I said, I know the kids enjoyed it, and thats the main thing. From now on, we will always team-teach this class, so we’ll both be physically teaching two classes a day. Its pretty cool. I had a lot of fun doing it, and I know the kids did too.
